Sanford Women: Article Alludes To Multiple Affairs (UPDATED)

UPDATE 6/30: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has admitted that he 'crossed lines' with women other than mistress, but never had sex with them. From the AP:

The governor says he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria Belen Chapur, the Argentine at the center of a scandal that has derailed Sanford's once-promising political career.

During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife.

He says that during the other encounters he "let his guard down" with some physical contact but "didn't cross the sex line." He wouldn't go into detail.

Sanford said the casual encounters happened outside the U.S. while he was married but before he met Chapur.

Libby Spencer, a blogger at the Detroit News, points out that Sunday's article in The State describing how the affair blew up alluded to multiple affairs.

A reporter called a Sanford staffer, saying the paper had e-mails that outlined an affair between the governor and Maria. Unless Sanford would address the issue privately, The State would have no choice but to ask him -- with TV crews filming -- if he knew Maria at his press conference that afternoon.

The names of two other women tumbled into the newsroom. [...]

And more names of women were coming in over the transom. The total was at three and counting.

"Women?!" [Former Sanford Chief of Staff Tom] Davis responded, sounding incredulous. "Women?!"

The article does not elaborate on the other women.

I think the real meat of this story is not that there are likely other mistresses yet to be revealed, but that it was only after he was threatened to have evidence of the affair exposed to the public did he come clean. Remember, when he was initially confronted at the airport coming off a plane from Argentina, he claimed to have been driving alone along the coast while there. He would NEVER have admitted what really was going on unless forced. I for one wish that The State had sprung the information on him at the press conference instead of giving him the opportunity to prepare some remarks. Sanford has yet to issue a real apology to the people of his state and show any humility. He is an arrogant hypocrite and is hiding behind God to try and escape the people's wrath. God ain't gonna like that.

I voted Yes, sure, it's great revenge, but on whom or what in her case ? Maria is on to younger pastures, Her husband is a pathetic mess and immune to her charms, and her peers? That's a small group of very wealthy heiresses, so I can't imagine what makes them tick.
I'm glad she's keeping it together and taking good care of herself and the kids, but the sad shambles of that marriage is a tragedy that can't be sweetened. Even by revenge.

The Gov seems to be a bow wow with the cover of a spiritual leader. More to come out. Next edition coming up. Advice to Ms. Sanford. Take the boys to counseling to prepare them for life after security, excess and a dad who would rather be with his women then with them. Keep them safe Ms. Sanford and more on with your life away from him.
