I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sarah Palin

So, like a month ago, David Letterman told some jokes. Some not-that-great jokes! And one or two of them were directed at Sarah Palin and her family. And so, in keeping with the prophesy, she let slip the dogs of aerial wolf-hunty outrage, and then everyone, everywhere was warblogging about it.

Me, I said, "Lo, but this is some stupid nonsense. Sarah Palin, really, like Alex Pareene once said, you got to let the stuff slide, sometimes." It doesn't make mean jokes okay. It doesn't make wrong stuff right. It's just that sometimes, you have to appear to be above it all, untouched by the vulgar vagaries of late-night comedians and their captive audiences of claques.

But the Sarah Palin fans, they could not be assuaged! And in many millions of emails, they asked me if I would "let the stuff slide" if it were directed at my kid. Many of them, budding late night comedians themselves, fell all over to come up with their own vulgar jibes, and I enjoyed them all. And the answer, my friends, is that I don't know what I'd do if I were insulted in the same way by David Letterman. But I do know that the nation is not potentially counting on me to remain calm and level-headed in the case of crisis.

If I flip out, and choke some fool in the middle of the street, guess what? The Republic will survive. But Sarah Palin -- who wants to be president maybe? -- will face madmen and cryptofascists and evil mullahs if she's elected. And in addition to these madmen and cryptofascists and evil mullahs, she will also, as president, have to contend with people who aren't on K Street.

So, my advice to Sarah Palin would be to do as the old ad copy said: Never let them see you sweat. Don't get involved in a land war with David Letterman. Let other people go crazyface on your behalf.

Yet, this past week, some blogger no one had ever heard of did a photoshop putting the face of a talk show host no one had ever heard of on the body of Trig Palin. And now, all of these people that you had heretofore never heard of are famous, because Sarah Palin wouldn't let the stuff slide. Even dumber, she said that the Photoshopping was a "desecration," which means she believes Trig had been "divested of her sacred character." Now I think Trig Palin is an awesome kid, but COME ON. That's a really pretentious thing for a parent to say.

Anyway, shortly after Sarah Palin went WARBONKERS on a blogger you never heard of, the entire internet responded in an even more vapid and juvenile fashion, and now there are stupid Photoshops everywhere, thanks to Sarah Palin, because that is what happens when you feed the beast with your stupid anger, instead of calmly letting some stuff slide and depriving the beast of oxygen.

Yes, Sarah Palin has not learned and will probably never learn the important, presidential art of sometimes letting some stuff slide. And every other leader of the GOP knows this. And that is why when David Gregory or some such teevee talking-face asks any random GOP figure about whether or not Sarah Palin is a presidential contender or the "future of the Republican Party," they all -- EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM -- say something like, "Uhhh...yeah? Sarah Palin? Boy, yeah. She's just...great...we have so many great Republicans...uhhhh, yeah. Whole bunch of 'em. Say? Have you heard about Haley Barbour?"

Not Afraid To be Oversharey: Man, I'm not sure how I feel about Ross Douthat writing an article entitled "The Way We Love Now." But hey, Mickey Kaus has been blogging for ten years, now. And somebody out there said, "Hey, let's make an incomprehensible sequel to Transformers, with Egyptology, and robot boobs." I guess we're living in a brave new era of terrifying possibilities.

My Ongoing Series On Demystifying The Political Press: I want to just point out, in Ceci Connolly's defense, that the Washington Post has never made it a requirement that their reporters be smart enough to know the difference between the substance of an issue and the politics of an issue. Evidently, I mean.

Straw Men Form Civil Liberties Group, Provide Obama With Political Cover: Via Spencer Ackerman, inquiring minds want to know: Who are these civil liberties groups who are said to have "encouraged" the Obama administration to enact a "prolonged detention system...through executive order."

Why do you make fun of Sara Palin being upset about attacks on her family and her son? Barack the Great got pretty upset about people making fun of his big ears. Don't you have a problem with that? Shouldn't he let the stuff slide?

Attacking Downs babies and making fun of people is the work of small minds and of people who can't win arguments on the merits.

Poor Sarah.

It has gotten MUCH worse since she's threatened to sue the internet for being mean.

http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/sorry-sarah-palin.php Something Awful apologizes &
http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_political/3482838.html ontd_political declares "The internet is coming for Sarah Palin"

And that is just from today...I haven't hit 4Chan yet...
The internets do not like being 'threatened' and the lulz has only just begun.

You are all missing the point. Sarah went on national TV ostensibly to talk about the gas pipeline negotiations in Alaska, an actual political issue in the state where she is governor. But she brushed by that topic with BS, saying essentially nothing, and got right on to the "real story" she was there to talk about, David Letterman's joke. The way we see it here in Alaska is that she uses stuff like the David Letterman joke to keep her in front of the camera and hide the fact that she hasn't the foggiest idea how to do the job of being governor. ESPN, please give Sarah her dream job. With a little practice she could learn to read copy.

Maybe with the death of Farrah Fawcett, there will be a resurgence of Charlie’s Angels, and we can get Governor Palin to play one of Charlie’s Angels. This might satisfy her insatiable need for fame and save the people of Alaska from another Sarah term and save the American people from being forced to endure another Sarah campaign. All of her little Sarahsites could watch her weekly on TV thus satisfying their need for a weekly Sarah sermon.

She couldn't even drive them around. Call the SC Governor and get a date for Sarah. She needs something.

Sorry. There's something not so loving and proud about the way she holds that baby and the face she makes as she's holding him up. The original statement from her camp was that this photo was an iconic portrayal of motherly love!

Palin is doing a "begathon" for $500,000 to pay "the legal expenses for "all those frivolous ethics complaints" The state only has less than $300,000 total .

Other than her own troopergate complaint the bill of $200,00, it comes to 100,000, while Palin and her staff said that it cost the state MILLIONS!
==================================================================
Juneau Empire

Alaska has spent nearly $300,000 investigating ethics complaints against Gov. Sarah Palin, who calls the complaints “harassment” against her and expensive for the state to defend.

Palin has accused bloggers and political opponents of bringing “frivolous” ethics charges against her.

“How much will this blogger’s asinine political grandstanding cost all of us in time and money?” Palin asked after the state Personnel Board dismissed another complaint last spring.

Palin herself may be responsible for much of those costs, as indicated by a list of investigation costs for 13 separate cases the state Personnel Board released Tuesday in response to public records requests.

The minimalist list identifies cases only by the year and a three-digit case number. State Personnel Director Nicki Neal ........refused ........to identify them more specifically, so connections between known investigations and the costs released could not be verified.

However, the timing, scope and other factors of the single largest expense appear to fit the case Palin filed against herself that cost $187,797 to investigate. That’s almost two-thirds of the total $296,042 of all Personnel Board investigations in the last two years.

Jason, I agree with you and I think you make very good points about the distinction of her position and ambition, in comparison to the regular Joe that doesn't affect the Republic... and what is my response? I think it was kinda of funny, even if inappropriate. I do think that many of the people that are up in arms have a chip on their shoulder, but isn't that the way things have been going? Here are some of the issues you didn't touch on... 1) the hypocracy of the politics... should the Rutgers basketball ladies "let it slide"? Should women in high positions in corporations "let it slide" if they are sexually harrassed? Should Obama let the presidential portraits email "slide"?... and 2) Speaking of sexual harrassment... why does this not qualify? If I called my VP "slutty" or created a "picture" of a subordinate... I would think it would be harrassment. I, for one, think the laws are too subjective, but why the double standard? ALL women should be upset, regardless of politics. And Sarah's not holding women down with her defense, women who create infighting due to politics when facing a womens issue are holding all down.

Hey, again, I thought it was funny if inappropriate, and I do think people are over sensitive, but I don't presume to pick and choose who should "let it slide" or control their hyperhydrosis based on political affiliations or personal attachments...

Funny how the Conservatives leap all over to attack an evil Photoshop.... when their own Faux Noise was photoshopping monkey-ish/caveman like features onto Democrats' pictures during the campaign.

Oh, wait-- they're the family values party and would never do anything smacking of hypocrisy.

"Some not-that-great jokes! And one or two of them were directed at Sarah Palin and her family."

Those "jokes" were directed at all girls and women, not just the Palins. Sarah has every right to defend herself. Blaming Palin for the onslaught of disgusting photoshopped images is like blaming the woman who got raped for wearing a short skirt.

Crawl out of your cave. There is something seriously wrong with ppl who ridicule infants with Down Syndrome, men who make jokes about sex with minors and men who refer to stewardesses or any other women as being "slutty".

Oh puhleeeeezzzz, get over it.
These jokes were about Sarah - pure and simple. Were they appropriate...probably not,...and the photoshopped picture was not an attack on a down's syndrome baby, again, it was targeted at HER. Does that make it right...again, probably not...but I don't know of any other politicians that would continue to fight these jokes and such when there are more important matters she needs to attend to - like governing her STATE...

Why did Sarah desecrate the American flag in her Runners World pictures? Her elbow is clearly resting on the flag! our troops aren't fighting, making the ultimate sacrifice, so Sarah Palin can use the flag as a table napkin and photo shoot prop! It's an outrage!

It is a woman like Palin who makes things harder on professional, intelligent women who want to be recognized for themselves and their hard work. She brings all women "down" when she "stoops" to the level of these jokes.

My biggest objection to Letterman's jokes is that taking he would never have taken potshots at a male pol for "looking slutty".

Have you checked out that freak in the Vanity Fair article...

Despite all of her faults she is still smarter than your President and better qualified. When Obama's spending spree comes crashing down and we have high inflation, an extended recession and rising interest rates you will wish that McCain and Palin were in office.
Well actually you won't. Liberals are the most uninformed people on Earth. They know what they know in spite of facts, logic, history or statistics. Hope, change and emotion trumps reality in your world.
