COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, already struggling to salvage his family and his political career after admitting a scandalous affair, added explosive details Tuesday, including more visits with the mistress he calls his "soul mate" and additional women in his past.

The once-promising presidential prospect said he is committed to reconciling with his wife, but professed to The Associated Press his continued love for the Argentine woman at the center of the firestorm that gutted his political future.

In emotional interviews with the AP over two days, he said he would die "knowing that I had met my soul mate."

Sanford also said that he "crossed the lines" with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage, but not as far as he did with his mistress.

"There were a handful of instances wherein I crossed the lines I shouldn't have crossed as a married man, but never crossed the ultimate line," he said.

Sanford insisted his relationship with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he met at an open air dance spot in Uruguay eight years ago, was more than just sex.

"This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story," Sanford said. "A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day."

Even with the latest revelations, Sanford maintains he is fit to govern and has no plans to resign.

"I've been able to do my job and in fact excel at it," Sanford said, while acknowledging he is a spectator at his "own political funeral."

During more than three hours of interviews over two days at his Statehouse office, Sanford said he is trying to fall back in love with his wife, Jenny, even as he grapples with his deep feelings for Chapur.

"I owe it too much to my boys and to the last 20 years with Jenny to not try this larger walk of faith," he said.

Sanford detailed more encounters with his mistress than he had disclosed during a rambling, emotional press conference last week. The new revelations Tuesday led the state attorney general to start investigating Sanford's travels, and some legislators to repeat calls for him to step down.

He delivered a personal check late Tuesday for nearly $3,000 to reimburse the state for a 2008 state-funded trip to Argentina where he visited Chapur, and he insists no public money was used for any other meetings with her.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell, who would chair any forced ouster of the governor by the Republican-controlled Legislature, said it's premature to heed calls from those in his own party to remove Sanford.

"I want to see what the investigation finds before I'm willing to discuss that topic," said Harrell, a Charleston Republican.

However, at least 10 of 27 Republican South Carolina senators have called for Sanford to resign.

Sanford, at times crying and unabashedly emotional, acknowledged in the AP interview that he had casual encounters with other women while he was married but before he met Chapur. They took place during trips outside the country to "blow off steam" with male friends.

"What I would say is that I've never had sex with another woman. Have I done stupid? I have. You know you meet someone. You dance with them. You go to a place where you probably shouldn't have gone," Sanford said, declining to discuss details. But he said those encounters were nothing like his relationship with Chapur.

"If you're a married guy at the end of the day you shouldn't be dancing with somebody else. So anyway, without wandering into that field we'll just say that I let my guard down in all senses of the word without ever crossing the line that I crossed with this situation."

Sanford also detailed more visits with Chapur, including an encounter that he described as a failed attempt at a farewell meeting in New York this past winter, chaperoned by a spiritual adviser and sanctioned by his wife soon after she found out about the affair.

But he saw Chapur again, this time over Father's Day weekend and after his wife expressly told him not to, leaving the country without telling his staff and instead leading them to believe he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

By the time he returned to a puzzled public, staff and family, his public image and emotional state had unraveled. He admitted the affair at a news conference televised nationally, but at the time said there were only four meetings with his mistress.

Sanford told the AP he saw Chapur five times over the past year, including two romantic, multi-night stays with her in New York _ one in Manhattan, one in the Hamptons, both paid for in cash so no one would know _ before they met in the city again with the intention of breaking up.

He said he saw her two other times before that, including their first meeting.

"There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," he said, though neither that first encounter nor a 2004 coffee date in New York during the Republican National Convention were romantic.

Their relationship turned physical, he said, during a government trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008, and when he returned, the e-mails that had started years earlier began to reflect anguish over what they had done.

"Now I am frightened," he told the AP, describing his state of mind at the time. "It was before safe. But now it's not safe. We gotta put the genie back in the bottle."

Critics have charged that Sanford should resign or be impeached because he was unreachable during the latest Argentina trip and that no one was in charge of state government during his secret absence.

In the interview, he said he first became aware that officials were looking for him Monday evening, June 22 _ four days after his departure for Argentina _ when he checked his cell phone voice mail.

"I was reached ultimately on Monday evening," he said. "I was contacted and called (chief of staff) Scott (English) back that Tuesday morning." Sanford said he then changed his flight to return to South Carolina that evening.

He and Jenny, parents of four sons, say they are trying to reconcile their marriage but have not been sharing the same house for several weeks. Jenny Sanford found out about the relationship in January when she discovered a letter the governor had written to his mistress. She did not immediately return messages seeking comment Tuesday and was not at their coastal home on Sullivans Island.

Mark Sanford is the poster boy for the current state of the Republican party. They have lost their minds. The party is in disarray. Their hypocrisy is revealed for all to see.

This man is a master manipulator. He wants Argentina and plans to be with her.
This latest ploy of "confess all" is only designed to embarrass his wife in such a way that SHE will announce the end of her marriage to him. Which will save face for her and her sons. As far as his job goes, he'll either resign or be voted out when his term expires. One way or another, he's going back. And just like any other man, when it comes to what he wants, the kids won't matter.

Ok, a wrap up here.

99.99999% of the people ALL know it ain't an epic luvvvvvv story but a VERY juvenile man whose l.i.b.i.d.o. was in overdrive, period.

I want to know which news outlet is going to get the money s.h.o.t. this weekend of Sanford on the beach in Florida with a b.i.k.i.n.i b.a.b.e. in the frame. Of all the places to go, being anywhere near a place where there could be women in b.i.k.i.n.i.'s is not a better political move, I'd say.

Jenny gives another interview (catch the setup here) yesterday and she spoke directly to the g.a.y. element in all this or lack of one. They are just tag-teaming each other politically in all this.

Lastly, when is another ultimate or non ultimate line going to come forward? Just a matter of time, however, if not then it bears the question, if those others were not the ultimate line variety, what kind were they? Ewwwwwwww....(Jenny be tested)

I must be one of those 0.00000!%.

While I never cared for Gov. Sanford, or almost all repubs for that matter, I know I was in love with my mistress (the only one I ever had). If he is being truthful about his love for Maria, then I feel for him because I know what it's like (unlike the vast majority of posters here).

Yeah, it's tiresome, but I still have questions. Sanford returned 3,000 bucks for one of his dalliances with his Latin lover. Yet he used no public money? To be sure, the money wouldn't have been returned had he not gotten caught. This guy is a sanctimonious sleaze. Step down, Mark. If he doesn't, I suppose we do get the leaders we deserve.

Sanford reminds me of someone who has been accused of being a closeted homosexual and really really really would rather be known as a low down, no good adulterous husband involved in an affair with an Argentinean woman. He reminds me of the actor who jumped all over Oprah's sofa because he was soooooo in love with Katie Holmes which made him NOT Gay!! He reminds me of an evangelical leader who would rather admit to using Methamphetamine than admitting to having sexual relationship will a male escort. Sanford wants us to know that he is really honest and truly engaged in a illicit, but loving affair with a Woman.

I am just waiting for some more skeletons to fall out of the closets of some more republicans. We will be having a field day come fall 2010 elections.

Perhaps, but with the Democrats' stimulus failing incredibly and this Cap & Trade fiasco we may see major changes name-wise but not so much party-wise.

When Clinton had his extra marital affair with an intern, the republicans were the first ones to cast stones at him by calling for his impeachment and the whole nine yards. The main characters in this role were Bob Stevenson from Louisiana who admitted to infidelity Newt Gingrich, who had his own extra fling going on while disparaging Clinton. Then came one of the Arkansas brothers either Asa or Tim Huchinson who also had an affair going on while married. Mark Foley was another character but in a whole different arena. This was followed by John Vitter , senator from Louisiana who wouldn't have acknowledged but if it were not for that SMALL BLACK BOOK (How great does a SMALL BOOK play?) Also Mr. WIDE STANCE (Larry Craig, senator from Utah) who intimidated the cop, saying he was a "SENATOR". And now Gov. Sanford. It is not that the Dems have not had their share of personal woes, but it is the HYPOCRITICAL republicans who talk as though they are the party of CHASTITY, RELIGIOUSNESS, HIGH MORAL AND FAMILY VALUES. Give us a break !!!!

Actually we called for his impeachment because he lied under oath. But believe what you want.
About all the Republicans having affairs: It is unfortunate and as a party we do not condone it at all, in fact we condemn it. However, many prominent Democrats have also had affairs, so, at least in my view, it's a wash.

You are so wrong. I did say that Dems have had their share of scandals, the only difference being the republicans preach chastity, high moral virtues, family values, church and GOD and turn around and commit the same sins. So it's not a wash but the TRUTH.

Based on your rationale, then the next time an incident comes up with a Dem, can we then sight it's wash too regardless of the offense? Saying it's a wash is far too easy, and yes, either for Dem's or Repub's. Of course, you can always adhere to Rush's belief that Sanford did what he did because Obama "made" him do it. Nice try going with that one too to get this story off the front pages.

Horny bastard. And, brazen, to say the least. He took the moral "high ground" before it was discovered what he was up to when not running his conservative mouth off. And these guys never learn. It is just almost impossible for a public figure today to keep inappropriate behavior a secret. This fact must be part of the allure of the behavior to begin with--that risk of being caught.

At first, I could care less about this man's affair. Don't we have anything better to think about in the the United States, I queried, on another forum.

Now I don't know whether to laugh or throw up. Isn't this one of the politicians who voted for the Clinton impeachment calling Clinton's behavior "reprehensible"? And now, his wife is being quoted on another page being so *charitably Christian* about how she "forgives Mark."

Bet she knew all along, including the others!

Were any of these women during these escapes during the impeachment of Clinton?

These folks are sickening. Their hypocrisy, their bs "family values" meaning, basically, they fake it.

A love story whereupon he met "his soul mate" and he'll die with the satisfaction of knowing that, and he's staying with his wife?

Perhaps the saddest part, are all the Americans who are going to buy this baloney of a soap opera. What a cheap farce, what a melodramatic act from a self-indulgent opening of an alimentary canal. His fake wife included.

What's their take on health care? Housing? All the Americans that have died in Iraq during the filth of an administration called the Bush years?

Maria Belen is his "soul mate," but he's trying to "reconcile" with his wife because he "owes" her and the kids? That is so demeaning. It is apparent from these statements (and from his press conference, in which he just preached to us about the bible and morality) that this man knows nothing about accountability. He just hides behind the guise of religion, and is totally passive aggressive about pushing the blame on others. Sanford is a big baby who never grew up.

I do not have any belief in people who say are religious, read the bible and go to church every Sunday. Why - because they are the biggest bunch of HYPOCRITES. This may offend some, but this is the REALITY.

What, exactly, is the "ultimate line" that Mark Sanford did not cross with all those other women?

I don't believe the sophistry-prone Sanford thinks that line is sex.

Remember Clinton, and the southern-male definition of what isn't "sex": Eatin' ain't cheatin'.

Indeed, that is a Gree-oss definition of "crossing the line." Such justifications just make one shake his head. Either play by the rules, or get out. It's quite simple.

PS . . . that sort of justification . . . it's rediculous. What is frightening is Sanford's obviously flawed reasoning, and the apparent idea that he can get people to believe him. He's not even worth it. He needs to go away!
