America's Fattest States: Mississippi Still Tops List, But Alabama Closes In

Mexico Fat Challenge

WASHINGTON — Mississippi's still king of cellulite, but an ominous tide is rolling toward the Medicare doctors in neighboring Alabama: obese baby boomers.

It's time for the nation's annual obesity rankings and, outside of fairly lean Colorado, there's little good news. In 31 states, more than one in four adults are obese, says a new report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

And obesity rates among adults rose in 23 states over the past year, and no state experienced a significant decline.

"The obesity epidemic clearly goes beyond being an individual problem," said Jeff Levi, executive director of the Trust, a nonprofit public health group.

It's a national crisis that "calls for a national strategy to combat obesity," added Robert Wood Johnson vice president Dr. James Marks. "The crest of the wave of obesity is still to crash."

While the nation has long been bracing for a surge in Medicare as the boomers start turning 65, the new report makes clear that fat, not just age, will fuel much of those bills. In every state, the rate of obesity is higher among 55- to 64-year-olds _ the oldest boomers _ than among today's 65-and-beyond.

The report provides one of the first in-depth looks at obese boomers, and its implications are sobering. This first wave of aging boomers will mean a jump of obese Medicare patients that ranges from 5.2 percent in New York to a high of 16.3 percent in Alabama, the report concluded. In Alabama, nearly 39 percent of the oldest boomers are obese.

Health economists once made the harsh financial calculation that the obese would save money by dying sooner. But more recent research instead suggests that better treatments are keeping them alive nearly as long _ but they're much sicker for longer, requiring such costly interventions as knee replacements and diabetes care and dialysis. Medicare spends anywhere from $1,400 to $6,000 more annually on health care for an obese senior than for the non-obese, Levi said.

Story continues below

"There isn't a magic bullet. We don't have a pill for it," said Levi. "It's not going to be solved in the doctor's office but in the community, where we change norms."

His group is pushing for health reform legislation to include community-level programs that help people make healthier choices _ like building sidewalks so people can walk their neighborhoods instead of drive, and providing healthier school lunches to help fight the childhood obesity that turns into adult obesity. The pending House and Senate bills address obesity in different ways; one provision would particularly target baby boomers.

Many states have begun programs to try to tackle obesity, and there are hints of improvements, Marks said.

"We're still getting fatter, but maybe a little more slowly than before," he said: Last year's report found obesity rates rising in 37 states compared with 23 this time around.

He's encouraged that 19 states have implemented nutritional standards for school meals that are stricter than the federal government's; in 2004, just four states did. Some are requiring nutritional information for restaurant food, he added.

States "recognize the solutions will lie outside traditional medical care," Marks said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has long said that nearly a third of Americans are obese. The Trust report uses somewhat more conservative CDC surveys for a closer state-by-state look. Among the findings:

_Mississippi had the highest rate of adult obesity, 32.5 percent, for the fifth year in a row.

_Three additional states now have adult obesity rates above 30 percent, including Alabama, 31.2 percent; West Virginia, 31.1 percent; and Tennessee, 30.2 percent.

_In 1991, no state had more than a 20 percent obesity rate. Today, the only state that doesn't is Colorado, at 18.9 percent.

_The South is the fattest region. The Northeast and West are slightly slimmer than the rest of the country.

_Mississippi also had the highest rate of overweight and obese children, at 44.4 percent in total. It's followed by Arkansas, 37.5 percent; and Georgia, 37.3 percent.

_Following Alabama, Michigan ranks No. 2 with fat boomers; 36 percent of its 55- to 64-year-olds are obese. Colorado has the lowest rate, 21.8 percent.

There are several things that we should keep in mind when considering the fact that Mississippi is the most obese state in the US. Instead of pointing fingers at the people of this state and writing them off as lazy and unwilling to get rid of their fried foods, let’s consider some other factors that may have led to this unfavorable reputation. One is that with our current food retail culture many markets serving smaller areas of Mississippi have been forced out by larger chain supermarkets. These markets having closed left few areas with retail supermarkets leading to the increase in food deserts. A report was done that showed that rural counties in the Lower Mississippi Delta average one supermarket per 190.5 square miles. Also 70 percent of the lower income populations in this region must travel 30 or more miles to get to lower priced foods offered by the chain supermarkets. Those who do not have transportation to reach these places then have to shop at convenience stores or other price gauging locations. Let’s think about these lower income individuals who are using food stamps to supplement their dietary needs therefore have less money to buy the nutritional food that they need. So before we pass blame we should think about the structures that may be causing the people of Mississippi to be obese.

Welfare.
Food Stamps.
White flour, sugar and fat. It is too easy to add the pounds consuming these things. WalMart* sells these substances by the barge-load.

Do farm subsidies subsidize healthy food or is it that fattening foods are cheap because they are subsidized?

See the movie King Corn for a real eye opener regarding subsidies and our food. The majority of corn grown in this country is to feed cattle, which their double stomachs are not designed to digest, and to make High Fructose Corn syrup. HFC's are in everything that is processed. Check the labels on everything you buy, if it's not HFC then there is sugar in it.

I believe soybeans are also subsidized, however it is estimated that 90% of the soybeans that are grown around the world are genetically modified and that patent is owned by Monsanto. That is why Dr. Gabriel Cousens avoids all soybean products in a vegetarian diet.

Hope that helps.

Ooooooooh, gal...you've just hit on my FAVORITE pet peeve...CORN FRUCTOSE!

King Corn was good, but if you really want to delve into the belly of the Agribeast, rent the documentary "Fed Up".

The revolving door between those "serving" in our government agencies and Big Ag will make your head spin and your stomache churn.

The worst food has the highest corporate profits, so good luck trying to change the way Americans consume their food product.
To most of the people making the decisions in our country, humans are fuel for corporate profits, period.

In my lifetime I have heard the "it's my genetics" being spouted by any number of overweight people. That's BS for 99.999% of folks. Doctors should be telling their patients in no uncertain terms what they need to do. Maybe once the insurance companies have to pay out more and more they can get their pet politicians to write laws restricting bad food.

It takes almost no time to prepare a meal from fresh ingredients, but most of my co-workers "know" that its somehow superior to eat pre-made food.

Actually the insurance companies are running a testing program with Safeway employees. The employees who sign up for the program agree to let Safeway monitor all of their purchases and allow that information to be shared with the Insurance companies that are part of this test. The premise is that those who eat a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle deserve better breaks in their insurance. So expect changes to be coming in the near future regarding your coverage options in your health insurance.

You all go ahead and laugh, and use Mississippian's as the butt of your jokes, it's not like it hasn't been done for years. While you make judgements, chew on this- the powers that be (RepubliCAN'Ts) have ruled the state for the last ten or so years and have refused to raise the State's minimum wage. Yes, up until the Government raised it, it remained at just a little over $5.00 per hour. What happens then is that Companies think that if they pay $7 or $8 dollars an hour, then they are a couple of buck above minimum and any employee should be happy. Unfortunately, the cost of living has continued to rise there, just as it has in your own states.

When college educated people, such as my son, has to work for $7.50 per hour, you tend to buy rice, potatos and pasta, as well as using cornbread and white bread to fill the stomachs of your family. The people of Mississippi, just like people in any state want better for themselves and their families, but it has been all but made impossible to do better.

Well, at least it gives the rest of the country something to laugh at....bully for you!!

The problem in Mississippi isn't fast food. Its the fact that the
Governer and the Legislator sat on their hands and refused to raise the minimum wage in that State for the entire 10 years that it remained at a little over $5.00 per hour. They voted themselves a raise every year, but didn't feel the people deserved it. Consequently, most businesses who paid $6.00 or $7.00 per hour thought they were doing a favor to it's workers.

When a grown man. or woman, even a college educated one, only makes $9.00 or $10.00 per hour, you buy more things like rice, pasta, and potatos to try to feed your family. NO, contrary to popular belief, things are not that much cheaper in the State.

The people get a bad rap, you know, Trailor trash and all, but if they could make a decent wage, they are just like everyone else and want better. Oh, by the way, RepubliCAN'Ts have been the ruling party in the State for the last ten years...nuff said.

No matter how little money you make, no one is forcing you to consume 3000+ calories a day and not exercise. Cereal isn't that expensive. Eat a modest lunch and dinner and be a little active, and you won't be obese.

A lot of people from the South love their fried foods and won't give them up for anything, look what comes out of Paula Dean's kitchen. The people there eat too much of rich fatty foods, don't blame everything on poverty. There bad food habits have been instilled in them since childhood. One can always grow a little vegetable garden and have some good foods to eat, it takes a bit of work and time and well worth the effort. If you want to be healthy, get rid of the rich gravy's, butter, pies, lard, donuts, white bread and start eating some better foods. We also should learn to cut back on our intake, eat smaller portions and teach your children to do that also, there is no need to stuff ourselves, we have become a nation of overstuffed gluttons and our health is suffering for that reason.

This is all about the adulterated food supply full of fat, sugar and additives. The food itself is unhealthy but super-flavored; people find the taste addictive and cannot stop eating. As far as dietary habits, the portions are too big and people snack too often. The French eat rich food but in small portions, and rarely snack, and are much thinner and healthier. The government will blame the people but it's really the food and restaurant industries that are to blame, and change won't occur until they change their ways.

The south, what a surprise...also mostly red states. This population by far contributes more to the increase in healthcare costs to all americans yet refuse to own up to it. The population in these red southern states are too busy stuffing their faces and watching fox news rather than exercising or doing something constructive for society. Just the other day there was a fat couple riding around in a huge SUV with a bumper sticker that read"why should I pay for your health care" Really really...

Do you know why Americans eat so much? I'll tell you why! Freedom!

Also, America is the greatest best country that God gave man on the face of the earth, and everything we do is the best just because we're the ones doing it. So if we're also the fattest country, that means that being fat is great.

People are simply eating too much and too much stuff loaded with empty calories (french fries anyone?).

Ever gone to an All-U-Can-Eat Buffet at some place like the Golden Corral? 90% of the people eating at these places are overweight and go back to the food bar several times.

I order Kid's Meals which are also loaded with calories but at least they are closer to the actual size of a meal an adult woman should eat.

I know right? Why are kids meals smaller than adult meals when kids are growing and therefore need more calories- especially since most adults are less active than most kids too? This just doesn't add up to me.

Having lived in most regions in this country (now living in Colorado, the "leanest" state)- I would like to point out that weather plays a big role in the amount of outdoor excercise that people get. Colorado has 300-something days of sunshine and no humidity. I was just in Nebraska for a week- the heat and humidity were unbearable. There is an adoration of the outdoor life that many Coloradans share- as in other regions of the country- it's just that it is infinitley more pleasant, more of the year here.

No, the reason people in the South are Obese or overweight has to do with their diet, if you look closely you will see States like Alabama and Mississippi have something in common, poverty and being able to purchase foods that are healthy is out of their reach and they have to settle for food that is cheaper, contains more fat and sugars. Many Many of these people work very hard, even though they are overweight, when this country decides to quite punishing the people of the South and help them economically then maybe we will see a healthier lifestyle in this region.

I think this if a very good point. People who are poor often live in areas were healthy food is not easily available as well as out of their reach financially. There is something truly wrong when it is cheaper and easier to buy food at a fast food restaurant than buy the ingredients for a healthy meal at the grocery store. The produce departments in a low income neighborhood almost always is pitiful.

Unlike money -healthy food grows on trees. I have been poor most of my life and it is not a barrier to eating healthy (not here in the US). Poverty isn't the problem there, ignorance - and being too busy to be able to slow down and do what you need to do- is.

Don't forget that obesity also has to do with ignorance, poverty, and lack of education. There is no way that the balance of the country can help the south if they keep on electing officials that want to keep them in whatever situation they are in. It is the Republican mantra that the people should not depend on the govt. to help them yet when southern states elect Republicans they fulfill that ideology which is not to help.

Americans work more hours now than ever before. For those who spend 60 hours a week behind a desk and are forced to live on fast food, there is no hope. When you are southern and poor, purchasing fresh healthy food isn't an option. Young people develop preferences for the cheap fattening garbage that their parents serve them and we blame them for their obesity when they age. Manufacturers of food products have had free reign by the FDA for years to sell unhealthy and sometimes downright poisonous food. Kindly stop blaming southerners for being raped and pillaged by Corporate America. Demand penalties for corporate abuses. This healthcare burden belongs to everyone.

Amen! Smug comments about personal responsibility and making sensible choices blithely ignore a host of serious systemic problems around obesity. You have stated those systemic issues eloquently - poverty, education. geographic location, cultural practices and a billion dollar "food product" industry that peddles health destroying poison in the guise of food all factor heavily in addition to personal responsibility.

I would like add the fact that many who live on fast food, processed foods and convenience foods develop addictive food cravings, making exceedingly difficult to have will power. Many are actually addictive to the poisonous products peddled by the food industry pushers, and they have to break those addictions before they have any chance at using their will power and personal responsibility.

I agree the food industry is only too glad to sell us foods that will develop the unhealthy food cravings as then they can sell more of their garbage foods and we go like sheep to be slaughtered and buy more of these very unhealthy foods. One has to start developing some sort of will power when it comes to what we put in our stomachs, or we will are in danger of becoming unhealthy garbage cans. One should get more mirror in our homes.

What is the statute of limitiations on being a victim of big bad Corporate America? As you embrace your victimhood you relinquish your power to respond and address the issues that plague you. Personal responsibility has nothing to do with who's to blame, rather it determines who holds the power to rectify the circumstances and the causes behind it. The power in victimhood is a mirage!

This is overly simplistic, and discounts how powerful an influence Corporations are. You have to realize that people are vastly uneducated when it comes to nutrition. Even doctors are often clueless (ever been in a hospital and eaten the garbage they serve?). Corporations take advantage of that. Corporations have more rights and power than the individual in this country, sadly.
