NEW YORK — Gwyneth Paltrow speaks almost perfect Spanish _ and she does it with an Iberian accent.

The Oscar-winning actress says she traveled to Spain as a teenager, fell in love with the country, and embraces the culture to the point that she visits at least once a year and makes sure her young children, Apple and Moses, also speak the language.

"When I was 15, I went to a small town outside Talavera de la Reina and I had the most wonderful experience. It really changed my life," Paltrow said in fluent Spanish during a recent interview.

Paltrow said Spain "became a second home."

"It is so different from the United States. It seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old. Here in the United States an old building is about 17 (years old), and over there it's from 500 B.C., it's incredible," she said.

"Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little bit more. They aren't running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don't always have their Blackberries on."

Paltrow remains close to the family she lived with in Spain, calling them "my Spanish mother" and "my brothers" from Spain. Her success as an actress, she says, hasn't impressed them.

The 36-year-old actress, who is married to Coldplay's Chris Martin, says she talks to her children in Spanish.

"Moses speaks a little bit, but understands everything. Apple speaks a lot," she says.

Paltrow shot "Spain ... on the Road Again" with chef Mario Batali, cooking expert Mark Bittman and actress Claudia Bassols. They traveled throughout the country, sampling traditional foods and praising the virtues of Spain, its people and cuisine.

She's also writing a book on U.S. cuisine with Spanish influence that is due out next year.

" ... I love food, I love to eat," she says. "I can't go on diets. I have to do a lot of exercise."

She also enjoys Mexican, Italian and Japanese food.

"I'm always playing with different flavors. If I remember a phenomenal meal I had in a country, I think of its ingredients, and how I can make it in my own kitchen."

Paltrow recently launched a Spanish-language version of her Web site, GOOP.com, a weekly bulletin in which she writes on topics ranging from health advice and travel to fashion and cooking. Contributors include Madonna, Steven Spielberg and Deepak Chopra.

Has she considered acting in Spanish?

"I would love to. I haven't found the script yet, but the first (movie) would have to be a small role, not very important, because I imagine I would have to get used to acting in Spanish," she says.

Paltrow says she'd like to work with Spanish directors Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar and Mexico's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. And she says she would like to work again with Mexico's Alfonso Cuaron, who directed her in 1998's "Great Expectations."

She is now shooting "Iron Man 2," in which she reprises her role as Pepper Potts.

"We're all back together: Robert Downey, Jon Favreau, the director. And Scarlett Johansson is with us, Mickey Rourke. ... It's a phenomenal group, we are having a great time."

I can't believe the comments I'm reading about this interview. She simply stated facts about another country having an older history, that they keep restoring and taking care of their buildings, and that they have a slower, calmer lifestyle. I know this from my studies of this area. I have not been there. To me, it's just common sense. She is a great actress, has great style, she's a funny person and seems like a good mother. Her mother also seems great. I can't believe the viciousness coming from people who don't even know her. She just stated some facts about two different countries. You should have heard them over at Foxnation. Said this interview meant she was putting down America. They'll look for any reason to hate over there, Gwen. We love you in this family, Gwen, and have followed your work since you were young. Good job.

"WOW! I learned that language at Dalton and never knew there was a country that spoke Spanish, it changed my vacuous life."

I wish her enlightenment.
Or a daughter like herself.

Her success came because of connections two people in her life had in the industrie....Bruce and Blythe.... Her Oscar win was not solely based on HER talent. She's sort of the Haley Mills of this generation.

At least Hailey MIlls didn't act like an elitist snob.

PS. For those who don't watch the Tonight Show, Gwyneth recently overdid slicking her legs with oil and actually made tabloid headlines about it, hence my comment about putting more grease on her body then on her frypan.

It's much easier to be famour in Spain than in the US. You have got to give Gwen credit for picking up and leaving instead of complaining about the paporazzi.

Spain, I am sure is a lovely place to live. But, I really think she may hang around with the wrong people when she is in the USA. The people I know all love spending time with friends and family.

I don't think that she understands how ignorant it makes her sound to insinuate that all Americans (or a majority of us anyway...) are always on our "blueberry", don't discus anything but money and work and have no feelings for our friends or family.

I have even more in common with her adopted Spanish family, her success as an actress has not impressed me either.

I couldn't agree more. She hates herself and anyone who lives like her.

The first thing I thought when I read the article, was I'm not impressed either. I don't know if she knows how pretentious she sounds, or how judgemental. Didn't she say something similar about England or France a few years ago. I also agree that most people I know spend all their time with their families, when not working to pay the mortgage and bills. You're right, I don't know the kinds of people she knows, they must be really important though, to be that busy.

Almost EVERYWHERE in Europe is more interesting and has more civility than almost everywhere in the U.S.

It's my dream to retire to either Portugal, Spain, or Corsica in about five years...If I can't do that, I can't think of anywhere in the U.S. that has the same appeal (I currently live on a mountain in WV that is about an hour from DC, and while it's beautiful (altho' I don't like my house), I don't think it's where I want to spend the rest of my life.)... Santa Fe is terrific, but who can afford Santa Fe?...

Oh well, I guess time will tell...

Adios...AuRevoir...Caio!

if you live on a mountain in WV and read huffington post....you are more civil than most in the US.

I don't pay attention to her - she seems boring and suffers from lack of attention. Maybe her marriage isn't all it's cracked up to be and she's overcompensating.

As someone who wants to move to Spain within five years, I can say that I am excited about it, even though it is long off. But, I'm currently learning Spanish and learning more about the culture. I am excited about living in a new place that has such an old history. But the last thing that I am interested in is what Gwyneth Paltrow thinks of Spain.

She seems very shallow and likes to flaunt her wealth, which is just rubbing it into the faces of people who cannot afford the lifestyle. It's a turn off - besides that, she's a bad actress.

And who pays attention to you? Why do you need to tell us what are you going to do? Is that boring too? Do you suffer lack of attention?

If that's your attitude in Spain, you are not going to make many friends in Spain.

Si sigues asi, vas de culo!

Oh... is Gwyneth Paltrow the patron saint of Spain or something? If someone does not like her they will be automatically an outcast?

I thought Spain had higher standards.

I can't stand Gwen Paltrow.

But she is a very good actress.

A Perfect Murder is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Being a longtime expat, and a lover of Spain, I thought that there might be something revealing or interesting in Ms. Paltrow's story, but it just puts me to sleep. Like her movies.
