Perhaps justifiable during the draft. Especially during Vietnam.

Now there's a constant barrage of negativity and paranoia from the media.

Toughen up kids. Everything will be fine... or not.

US society caters to the young, so kids dont realize that getting older isnt all about responsibilities and stress. It's also about finding your life path and exploring those things that give us bliss. Thank God for my 40's!

When I was a teenager, I really believed I'd die before I was thirty. I don't know why - maybe I just didn't have a sense or perspective of time. I turn thirty this year, so I've still got a good 5 months to party.

funny you say that, i KNEW i would be dead by 30, yet...here i am at 43 still kicking. I think it has to do with feeling life will be over at 30. In a sense it was, my "child" life was over at 30. My "adult" life, where i do the things i want to in life, began at "40".

My 30's were a black hole of work and stress, GOOD RIDDANCE!

Blame the emos and their absurd lifestyle.

Emo is a fringe group, and the fad is practically dead. This isn't 2002. They'd hardly constitute 15% of the teenage population, that's for sure.

Also, it's not so much a lifestyle as it is a taste in music and a tendency to wear dark clothing.

I don't dig it either, but to call it a "lifestyle" or to blame such a small and silly movement on a larger sociological outlook is downright absurd.

Claire is cool. Wish she would get more roles. Shopgirl is a great one.

99% of teens having raging hormonal changes too. Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Hmmmmm.....may teens first start comprehending death of friends and family on a higher level [than say a 5 year old]. Next the study is going to tell me that water is wet.

Apparently the researchers have studied teenagers, but never hung out with any. Old news.

If you read the article, you can see its, the poor, ethnic teens who most often feels this way.Not so of your typical Mall Goths. They dye their hair and wear black. But that is fashion.I should correct myself because being"Scene " is the thing, now.

Seriously, when Pete Townshend wrote, "Hope I die before I get old," he was 20. He's now 64. For that matter, when Sir Paul wrote, "When I'm 64," he was 25. He's now 67 (Happy birthday, by the way, Sir Paul, June 18.). Our concept of age evolves as we, well, age. When, Lennon, Elvis and Belushi died, I thought they were old. Not so much anymore....

Oh good god, that's been true for decades. From fear of The Bomb to veneration of now-dead musicians who otherwise didn't have the sense the gods gave a turnip, angst-ridden teens have been sure of early demise and, surprisingly apparently, managed to make it past their expected expiration dates.

Real news, please.
