NAWA, Afghanistan — Thousands of U.S. Marines and hundreds of Afghan troops poured into Taliban-infested villages of southern Afghanistan with armor and helicopters Thursday in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's strategy to stabilize the country.

The offensive in the once-forgotten war was launched shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday local time in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and the world's largest opium poppy producing area. The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before the nation's Aug. 20 presidential election.

Officials described the operation, dubbed Khanjar, or "Strike of the Sword," as the largest and fastest-moving of the war's new phase, involving nearly 4,000 of the newly arrived Marines and 650 Afghan forces. British forces last week led similar, but smaller, missions to clear out insurgents in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.

"Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces," Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

Transport helicopters carried hundreds of Marines into the village of Nawa, some 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, in a region where no U.S. or other NATO troops have operated in large numbers.

Daybreak brought the sporadic crackle of gunfire, but no heavy fighting immediately broke out. Medical helicopters circled overhead and landed, indicating possible early casualties among the Marines.

A roadside bomb early in the mission wounded one Marine, but he was able to continue, spokesman Capt. Bill Pelletier said.

Southern Afghanistan is a Taliban stronghold but also a region where Afghan President Hamid Karzai is seeking votes from fellow Pashtun tribesmen.

The Pentagon is deploying 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in time for the elections and expects the total number of U.S. forces there to reach 68,000 by year's end. That is double the number of troops in Afghanistan in 2008, but still half of much as are now in Iraq.

The Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in 1996 and were ousted from power following a U.S.-led invasion in 2001, have made a violent comeback, wreaking havoc in much of the country's south and east, forcing the United States to pour in the new troops.

Pelletier said troops in Thursday's operation were sent in by a mixture of aircraft and ground transport under the cover of darkness.

The operation aims to show "the Afghan people that when we come in we are going to stay long enough to set up their own institutions," Pelletier said.

Once on the ground, the troops will meet with local leaders, hear their needs, and act on them, Pelletier said.

"We do not want people of Helmand province to see us as an enemy, we want to protect them from the enemy," Pelletier said.

"We are kind of forging new ground here. We are going to a place nobody has been before," said Capt. Drew Schoenmaker, 31, from Greene, New York, who commands Bravo Company of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

Reversing the insurgency's momentum has been a key component of the new U.S. strategy, and thousands of additional troops allow commanders to push and stay into areas where international and Afghan troops had no permanent presence before.

While Marine troops were the bulk of the force, recently arrived U.S. Army helicopters were also taking part in the operation in Helmand province.

In March, Obama unveiled his strategy for Afghanistan, seeking to defeat al-Qaida terrorists there and in Pakistan with a bigger force and a new commander. Taliban and other extremists, including those allied with al-Qaida, routinely cross the two nations' border in Afghanistan's remote south.

The governor of Helmand province predicted the operation would be "very effective."

"The security forces will build bases to provide security for the local people so that they can carry out every activity with this favorable background, and take their lives forward in peace," Gov. Gulab Mangal said in a Pentagon news release.

Obama aims to boost the Afghan army from 80,000 to 134,000 troops by 2011 _ and greatly increase training by U.S. troops accompanying them _ so the Afghan military can take control of the war. The White House also is pushing forces to set clear goals for a war gone awry, provide more resources and make a better case for international support.

There is no timetable for withdrawal, and the White House has not estimated how many billions of dollars its plan will cost.

Why is it that anyone who questions why we are at war once again is automatically assumed to be a "fake BO supporter?" You remind me of the G O Pers who defend bush even when everyone knew he was wrong about Iraq. It is ok to criticise the government and the president...really we don't nee to agree with everything he does. I personally never liked him but voted for him because I have never voted for a candidate who was not a democrat EVER going all the way back to Jimmy Carter. So that being said...i ama little tired of the BO worshipers who can not see that it is NOT ok to K!ll people...to teach them that k!illing is wrong. What happened to dialouge? what happed to discussion.
I do not beelive in k!lling anyone for the sake of argument....yeah I am against the death penalty too!

How is killing Muslims going to "bring peace to the middle east?" How is k!lling Muslims going to make friends with Islamic Nations? I think it is a bad move...regardless if the president ha s a R or a D after his name.

Let's not forget who is really fighting and bearing the brunt of this war! As of today, since it started there have been 538 Soldiers killed in Afghanistan while only 83 Marines, 46 Sailors and 45 Airmen have been killed there.

I would add that 3142 Soldiers have also been killed in Iraq while 1019 Marines, 100 Sailors and 51 Airmen have been killed there.

The Army is doing a disproportionate share of the fighting and dying for this country in these two wars although I am delighted to see the Marines have decided to rejoin the fight.

WHERE ARE THE SOLDIERS

Where are the soldiers who march in line?
Where are the soldiers every color and kind?
Where are the soldiers who made their moms cry?
Where are the pilots who face death in the sky?

Where are the soldiers born brave of heart?
Where are the girls and boys that part?
Serving our country with their future on the line
Battling the enemies of freedom of mind.

All of us are soldiers with missions of our own
We do what we do as history is sown.
Support our troops who we love and adore
Support our troops with prayers, letters and more.

Where are the soldiers so far, far away?
How many will perish no one can say.
Where are the soldiers we love night and day?
Deployed world over to keep evil at bay.

THEY SERVE TO PRESERVE

They serve to preserve our forefathers dreams,
Prayers, visions and determination.
Risking all in pursuit of fulfillment of duty
To God, freedom, faith, honor and nation.

Despite dismemberment, death and loneliness
Patriots enlist to safeguard our flag.
With honor, faith, purpose and courage
They battle the sadistic that brag.

Throughout man’s past as a creature of earth
War has always plagued his expectance.
Greed, hate, fear, envy and rage
Have overruled rapture and repentance.

David was a soldier who lived by his faith
Which gave him the will to become brave.
He stood up to terror and toppled the giant
Leaving Goliath headless and alone in his grave.

David’s call thrives in hearts of soldiers today
Shielding liberty from the warmongers of hell.
Facing down evil refusing to summit
Ensuring freedom and justice are alive and well.

Those of us blessed by the safety of home
Must remember the sacrifice of the few.
Run up your flag and show your support
For the heroes of the red, white and blue.

Obama wants us to believe we can tame and control Afganistan with 68,000 troops when the Soviets couldn't do it with 500,000 troops.

Time to review our policy?

President Obama said all along that he was going to go after the Taliban in Afghanistan so who could possibly be shocked by this. We have to try to wrap up the mess we're currently embroiled in. We're back to where we should have been after 9/11.

To you people who keep mentioning "John Galt"...do you live in a fantasy world?! This is the real thing and it's time to quit the fictional life your living.

Randism is a religion. Galt is the Chr!st figure of that religion.

The secular society has a long history of wrestling with Christianity to try to keep it within its proper bounds. The society does not have this historical perspective with the Rand religion.

Great book..just check out this review....

The news about this book seems to me to be that any ordinarily sensible head could not possibly take it seriously, and that, apparently, a good many do. Somebody has called it: "Excruciatingly awful." I find it a remarkably silly book. It is certainly a bumptious one. Its story is preposterous. It reports the final stages of a final conflict (locale: chiefly the United States, some indefinite years hence) between the harried ranks of free enterprise and the "looters." These are proponents of proscriptive taxes, government ownership, labor, etc., etc. The mischief here is that the author, dodging into fiction, nevertheless counts on your reading it as political reality.

Usually I'm against book burning. But, toilet paper is too good for this trash novel.

I don't understand why people are so upset. This was one of Obama's campaign pledges. Right or wrong we need to stand behind Obama.
I would also like to congratulate our TROOPS for the great job they did in Iraq. Why didn't the press cover this VICTORY, because they would have to give credit to Bush? And Obama showed no class in not giving the prior administration credit for what was accomplished, regardless of how we got into the War in the first place. Do you think the outcome didn't have an effect on Lebanon and Iran?
ANYWAY I want to wish the troops in Afghanistan and Obama much success and be safe.

As long as you guys hold Obama just as accountable as you did Bush in regards to the consequences of War and or War Cr*imes.
Then he has my blessing, Gods speed and good luck. To do anything less would be hypocritical.

I agree Obama should be held accountable for the success of this military action. I don't believe in any war crimes being committed by Bush. The only crime is that he got us into the war without an exit strategy.
I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged - great book. It will probably be banned soon.

"Right or wrong," sorry no one gets a free pass in my book. I'm tired of our leaders wasting our treasure and blood. The people don't answer to government. Government answers to the people.

Right or wrong we need to stand behind Obama?

Are you being serious?

I mean I think this is the right move but I don't do it for that reason. I do it because I think he's right. Not in spite of the fact I think he's wrong.

"VICTORY" your kidding ...is it a victory when a 15 year old kid beats up a 10 year old kid ?
You pre emptively invade a country that has never recovered from near total destruction 10 years earlier .
What's the difference ?
You are the 15 year old bully !
You don't even have the guts to admit you were lied to by your leaders ,lawmakers, intelligence services, and worst of all your News Media.

There was "shock and awe" but there is no victory its just more American Nation building !
The honesty must start somewhere, let it be with the people .

Woohoo!

We're going to do a better job of fighting wars that we probably shouldn't have started in the first place. I suppose you could apply the "we broke it so we own it" principle. I'm not actually arguing that. BUT, when are we going to take a hard introspective look at what role we should be playing in the world? I have nothing against our troops. I want them home. Atrocities have certainly been committed, but what do you expect when you throw 18-year-old kids from Iowa into a meat grinder? I want our kids home and to have a national town hall meeting. Of course I'm speaking figuratively. But why do we have multiple wars (with more on the horizon) and troops based in 60, 70, 80 countries? Is this a logical expenditure of our youth and treasure?

Don't even bother trying to write anything on this thread that has anything to do with learning from our recent fiasco in Iraq. Don't try to talk about the history of Afghanistan, and the real US mission to secure Afghanistan's hydrocarbon resources for itself. The US is not fighting a war against terrorism. The US is fighting to create a permanent presence for itself in both Iraq and Afghanistan to control and export oil and natural gas from both countries. But you can't say that here because these are the same people who bought the WMD lies about Iraq. These are the same people who started the "support the troops" chant whenever anyone questioned the motives of US military engagements in the Middle East. These are the same people who called those of us who protested against the Iraq war "anti-American." Perhaps when "national service" is placed on the table and all the cheerleaders are asked to serve a year or two on the front lines in Afghanistan, some will take the time to learn how to read a history book.

The taliban do not represent Islam, they cling to a fanatical and extreme interpretation that most muslims believe misrepresent their scriptures. While most Islamic nations are getting internet access the Taliban are still fighting the crusades and trying to drag the middle east back in time with them.
It is not through bombs and troops that we will see lasting change in the middle east but by technology allowing young people to experience other world views, seeing Islam accepted not demonized throughout the world. Lasting change will only come when educated people within these countries can speak with out fear of retribution, when people can share opposing points of view without being called enemies of their own faith.

Before I head to the new main, just gotta reiterate here that lest we forget it was the "decider" who got us knee deep into Afghanistan (and Iraq) and unless you've been President of the U.S., or some other country, try to refrain from enlightening all of us how easy it is for President Obama to, now, extricate us from said wars.

The new liberal agenda:

Ramp up the war in Afghanistan.
Talk tough and threaten Muslim and Asian countries.
Defend the government against the rights of the individual.
Speak softly and don't do s hi t.
Give money to banks and other financial institutions that give money to the party in power.
Feel good about the stock market going up while unemployment soars.
Let the Supreme Court keep turning to the right by appointing minority candidates with right wing views.

It's so exciting.
