This Is Andrew

Politico:

Today at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Andrew Sullivan discussed his blogging past, present and future before a packed lunchtime crowd and it was Sullivan's initial support for the U.S.-led invasion in Iraq that proved a prominent topic.

"I supported it like a teenage girl supporting the Jonas Brothers," confessed Sullivan, who currently writes and blogs for The Atlantic. Sullivan would later admit that his support for the war was misguided and told the crowd that it wasn't without its consequences.

"i supported killing innocent iraqis and americans to defend the profits of american corporations and the insane egos of neo-conservative politicians in a war built on lies a three-year-old could see through, then i changed my mind."

no dice. ever.

Andrew is a joke. I remember watching the Bill Maher show a few months ago and he was fighting against all of the other panelist that were opposed to the war. He was the biggest war and Bush cheerleader

Yes he was a gay Republican who supported Bush until Bush tried to put homophobia into the constitution. Then Andrew (like all the other gay Republicans) turned against Bush. Well you VOTED for him!!!!!!!!! (well Andrew didn't he can't vote in the US)

Gay Republicans are people who care more about their taxes than their human rights. It's disgusting.

You would have thought after the AIDS crisis (The Reagan Administration didn't care as we DIED in weeks) they would have known better.

Of course you were all gung-ho about the war, Andy...so was 70% of the American public. What people have to do is exercise their critical thinking skills BEFORE disasters like the Iraq War take place. Admitting that you were wrong six years after the fact doesn't help much.

I knew a guy at the time, an ex Marine. And he was all gung ho the day we invaded, but I was saying these things are very easy to get into but the hard part is getting out.

There were a lot of man crushes on Bush at the time. Men wanted to have a beer with Bush, be like him, be him. It was actually pretty Freudian and pretty creepy. The boys on Fox News, in particular, were breathing heavily about how he looked in the flight harness the day Bush declared Mission Accomplished.

It was obvious that Bush and Co. rushed us into that war, and there was reason to be skeptical about the evidence that they claimed to have had about WMDs in Iraq. Why didn't we wait for the inspectors to look for the WMDs? Why didn't we build a real international consensus?
In retrospect, it may be clear to Sullivan that invading Iraq was a bad idea, but at the time, many Americans did not agree Bush had adequately explained why it was necessary to invade Iraq. Maybe Sullivan should think carefully about what on earth convinced him that the war was such a great idea, and write a column on it.

The inspectors had actually been there a couple of months and after a little resistance at first, they were going everywhere and finding nothing. But the public in general supported the invasion.

A teenage girl has more balls than Andrew Sullivan.

Having read his blog intermittently , Sullivan admits he was wrong, admits that he was a part of the march to war, admits that his advocacy of war had and has consequences, dissects the neo-con fallacies that lead him to such a mistake, and draws attention to and debunks those fallacies that the unrepentant neo-cons continue to promote...not sure what more you could ask of the guy. And it's certainly more than you'll get from most of the politicians that green-lighted the war.

...and the reference to teenage girls and the Jonas Bros is a slap at neither, but rather himself and the lack of political maturity that he showed when a little depth and caution was called for.

If Sullivan hadn't written a word on the subject, we'd have still gone to war...he's not exactly a mover and shaker in conservative circles...It was Thomas Friedman who I wanted to throw out a window...he, of all people, should have known better.

I always did think it took guts to admit when you're wrong. Barack did it when he had recommended Tom Daschle and owned it like an adult would. Nothing I respect more than a change of heart in the matter of the truth. It's awfully late in the game, Andrew, but never late than never. Many of us KNEW when the towers fell this gave the neocons perfect advantage to abuse their executive, judicial and legislative powers and we'd be soon involved in oil wars of which these modern American nazis would heap all the fortunes on their super wealthy industrialist, non regulated goons who run our power, transportation, information, defense, telecommunications and pharmacy/health giants.

Not to mention a total disregard for human life. You know, soldiers that are dying needlessly over a war prosecuted on lies and subterfuge.

What these 18th century baboons don't realize is we're not going to make it as a planet with this excessive greed and inconsideration. Monkeys at the top are running things folks.
