WASHINGTON (AP) -- With joblessness rising, President Barack Obama said Thursday he was "deeply concerned" about unemployment and conceded that too many families are worried about "whether they will be next" to suffer economically.

In a White House interview with The Associated Press, Obama said that since he took office, "we have successfully stabilized the financial markets," and "started to see some stabilization on housing."

"But what we are still seeing is too many jobs lost," said Obama, commenting after new government figures showed the unemployment rate had risen to 9.5 percent last month.

On an important international subject, Obama is scheduled to travel to Russia next week, and he said the agenda includes talks on a new treaty to curtail long-range nuclear missiles. Asked why he intends to meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the former president, Obama said he "still has a lot of sway." Putin now is nominally the second-in-command in the Kremlin.

Obama also is to meet with the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev.

It is important that both Medvedev and Putin hear the same message from the U.S., said Obama, who added that he believes Putin "has one foot in the old ways of doing business and one foot in the new."

Obama praised Russia for its cooperation in attempting to persuade North Korea and Iran to abandon their nuclear development programs. The United Nations recently approved "the most robust sanction regime that we've ever seen with respect to North Korea," he said.

Asked if he was resigned to Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, he said, "I'm not reconciled with that, and I don't think the international community is reconciled with that."

Obama spoke sympathetically of white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., who won a Supreme Court case this week after claiming they had been unfairly denied promotions because of their race. But he added, "Keep in mind the Supreme Court didn't close the door to affirmative action" to help minorities.

At the same time, he conceded the justices were "moving the ball" on the issue with a 5-4 ruling in the case.

Obama, a former teacher of constitutional law, said, "I've always believed that affirmative action was less of an issue or should be less of an issue than it has been made out to be in news reports. It hasn't been as potent a force for racial progress as advocates will claim and it hasn't been as bad on white students seeking admissions or seeking a job as its critics say."

Asked about his plans for detainees currently held at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the president said the idea of indefinite detention being part of his legacy as president "gives me huge pause."

But he also said there are some detainees who don't fall neatly into existing categories for criminal prosecution in the United States or under international law. He said dealing with them is going to be one of the biggest challenges of his administration. He said he's not comfortable with mandating indefinite detentions on his own through executive orders, but he didn't explicitly rule that out.

And his view of Michael Jackson, whose death has dominated news coverage for nearly a week: The president said Jackson was "one of our greatest entertainers" and "I still have all his stuff on my iPod." But he said Jackson's life had been tragic and in many ways sad.

On light subjects:

-- The president spoke enthusiastically of the White House pastry chef. "Whatever kind of pie you want, he will make it," Obama said, adding ruefully that that was a problem for him and wife Michelle in regard to their weight.

-- Asked whether he was a bigger fan of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, one the reigning MVP of the National Basketball Association and the other a retired superstar, the basketball-playing president said without hesitation: "Michael. I haven't seen anybody match up with Jordan yet."

Read this great article on why the recession may be worse than most people think (or are being told by the media:

If there is one favor Obama has done for America, is that he has opened some eyes to the huge problem that is campaign finance, and the corruption in Congress.

No matter who is president, or what people wish to change, he has said again and again, the people will need to make the change. We will have to vote out Congress, and be very aware of where they get their financing, no matter what they tell us to get elected. Change will be possible, but it will never come from the President. It starts in your local district, and goes all the way too the White House steps.

If anyone here thinks that any executive branch that stays within the confines of the constitution can fix 30 years of greed and selfishness in 6 months, you should probably check themselves into an institution.

I've noticed change in President Obama.

I don't know how to describe it other than it seems like he knows something now that he didn't know before. It's effecting him because it seems to be written on his face and in his demeanor.

Does anyone else notice this?

I've notice it too. When he was campaigning he was a lot more optimistic then he is now. Of course he's discovering what it is like to be opposed at every turn with a bunch of neo-con obstructionists some of which are - surprise! - democrats. He needs to get a hold of these people and bring them "back into the fold"; that way the supermajority he now has in the Senate will start to work for him. Also he needs to take on one issue at a time. He is in the middle of Healthcare now, when that is accomplished then he needs to deal with employment. The country needs to realize that it was the Repugs that got us into this mess in the first place.

Becoming the President changes people. Other than Presidents that had to decide to put us into world wars, I cannot think of a president coming into office under so much pressure. The average man would curl into a ball and cry for hours at a time if you put this much weight on their shoulders.

We are smack in the middle of another generational war, class war, and two actual wars. 25% of the country is factually stupid, and cannot learn, 25% is completely ignorant to what is actually real, and the other 50% are fighting over who gets theirs first.

The average IQ in America is said to be 94, so what would you expect? :-)

I have to ask, does anybody believe the following? I ask this question of people who have been staying closely informed on the subject, not those who follow MSM headlines and Wall Street double-speak:

"In a White House interview with The Associated Press, Obama said that since he took office, "we have successfully stabilized the financial markets," and "started to see some stabilization on housing."

It is sad that Obama is upset about job losses when he is give compaines billions to slim down and cut costs. The first cut they make is hourly employees. Look at GM they the shut down all the U.S. plants but are keeping all teh mexican and Canadian plants going. Same with Cap and Tax it will cost Americans jobs but he'll just blame someone else like he always does.

Weeks ago Obama told us employment would not exceed 8% (a lie), he told us that the stimulus package was necessary to jump start the economy (a lie), and he told us there would be little pork and earmarks in the package (a lie). He put two major auto companies into bankruptcy but only after he tillegally ook care of his union buddies yet Obama said the days of catering to special interests are over (a lie). When is our President going to start telling the truth?

I'm not on their side. I have been very critical of Cheney as well. So don't assume that just because I have criticism for Obama that I don't see the corruption on the other side. 90% of them are snakes.

That doesn't make it right for Gore. He's profiting from the sale of thin air. He's the ultimate snake oil salesman.

I see nothing wrong with investing in a markets that will and must be developed to save humanity (clean energy) or investing against polluters who could care less, bribed our officials into ineffectiveness. They should be made to pay for the dirt that they have cast into our atmosphere dispite the warnings issued over the last 60 years. "Good" business works in harmony with the invironment in which it practices. It does not use every opportunity to destroy it and oppress its residents for the sake of profit. It reinvests into that environment and seeks to empower its population. I'll invest in business like that anytime.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:25 PM on 07/02/2009

I got a flash for you...No business seeks to empower its population - Period. The term 'investment' by you or a company implies there is something in it for you. If other HAPPEN to benefit from it, great. But let's not kid ourselves into thinking there are companies in it for others.

I'm a developer in the solar industry and I hate to tell you the dirty little secret. Solar, thermal and wind now account for less than 1% of the federal energy portfolio. Solar and wind will never be a major player with the cost per kilowatt-hour still up above 20 cents, even with federal, state and local incentives. Obama is now realizing the pie-in-the-sky promises of clean solar/wind industry is not a viable alternative to nuclear and fossil fuel. He now is preparing to consider nuclear as part of the mix. When that happens the cost per kw-h will be likely around 5 to 10 cents, pretty much placing solar and wind in the background. Carbon capture technology is developing whereby coal fired plants can capture and store generated emission gases. By the way, the average solar installer makes about what any non-union home improve worker makes today, in many cases less due to the thin margins solar contractors realize.

You hit the nail on the head. The government tried subsidies for years and nothing took so now they will raise the price on what you currently use so you are more willing to use the now "more affordable" energy.

You're forgetting about one part of the equation: If we're going to continue to live on this earth we have to cut back on pollution. This is going to require some costs. Everything isn't purely for the objective of profits.

What is more affordable about wind energy. The install costs are in the hundred millions and that does not cover the maintenance or the upgrades that have to made to the current grid system. Energy CEOs have already said that they will raise cost by 40% on bills. So if the only way I can save is to sit in the dark and make sure all my breakers are off then what is the point.

I'm hoping this will soon change. He's only been in office 5 months and I hope this increases., we should have it all - solar, wind, thermal. Homeowners should all have some sort of solar power. I am not thrilled with nuclear and power companies here in Florida basically write their own ticket. I don't know why the solar installer's wages are so low. The cost of a solar energy package for the average home is around $30K. It seems technical skills are involved, so I don't know, but it sounds like they are not getting their share.

Why don't we just skip wind and solar and go with Cold Fusion? I know it hasn't been developed yet, but if we really strain the economy the maybe.... just maybe....

The working poor have always been in a depression. I've been through about 6 recessions in my lifetime (at 68) and had to start over a number of times. Even going back to school in my early 30s really didn't help my job prospects that much, trying to get a 4 yr degree while supporting my 2 kids kept all 3 of us in poverty and no support from ex-husband or even family cheering me on (get a job and stop this nonsense, etc.), and I had to drop out after 2 yrs. At any rate, the best laid plans, etc., etc., etc. If you're young, get used to the fundamental cyclical nature of capitalism, boom and bust.

As I got older, the stakes kept getting higher, and the college diploma became the entrance to many jobs over even people who had lots of experience in certain areas. Even those with bachelors degrees saw jobs going to those with masters degrees. All those people complaining now about immigrants taking over better paid jobs were silent or cheering illegal immigrants on when the working class was run out of many of the jobs they had previously held, and I don't mean picking fruit. And now, three generations are fighting for the same kinds of jobs in retail, service, etc. It's really pathetic. Just glad I'm retired, but still relatively poor, and out of the rat race, at last.

Face it folks, Obama is winging it. He never was prepared or qualified to run the country. He's acting as though he is still a community organizer and throwing money after favorite projects, all to no long-term affect. He's never run a business, doesn't know what it's like to make a payroll and certainly doesn't understand microeconomics.

As to long-term effect, the long term (by definition) hasn't arrived yet, so we don't know yet. Though it would be nice to have some better idea as to what the long-term effects might be, that will result from what's done today.

I don't agree at all - he's managed to keep this country from falling off the cliff which from what I gather, we were a hair away from. He told us from the beginning it would not be easy or resolved overnight. He's been in office 5 months and I think he has done a tremendous amount of work considering the party of "no" resists every attempt of improvement and the Dems aren't a whole lot better. Economist Krugman says the stimulus package wasn't enough it should have been more, but getting the one through was resisted by the gop. I shudder to think if anyone ELSE was elected in Nov - we would be at the bottom with the gop.

He's light years ahead of anyone on your side of the aisle, that's for sure...And why is it that the country always seems to suffer deep recessions and the occasional generational depression while the Republicans are in control? Answer: Selfishness contracts economies.

Clearly, trickle down economics where the thrust of your economic plan is to put more money into the hands of those who already hold most of it in hopes that they will be motivated to invest in a business expansion or whatever has proven to be utterly baseless. The windfalls generally stay within the bank accounts of the top 2 - 3% who are the fundamental beneficiaries of said policy.

What has proven to be a much more effective approach is to raise all of the boats in the water. The economic activity that results generates far more profit and growth than anything else, raising the standard of living for many and the purchasing power of a far greater number of people than would otherwise be possible.
