I like that one of the Brooklyn streets in the rain. It has a real mood to it.

The city that never sleeps.

The last picture is gorgeous! Great shot.

I'm not a New Yorker but I've visited twice, once as a child and again two years ago. Fabulous city, but as a born-and-raised "suburbanite," I'm not sure I could live there. Ideally, I'd enjoy suburban life with the availability of NY's amenities and city life (Broadway, shopping, etc.) close at hand. If I can find a way to make that happen, look out NY, here I come!

Hey LovesMusicLikesToSing, we have plenty of beautiful, sprawling suburbs just a train's ride away. Now, what's your excuse? :-)

Please . . . share some info. I need all the reinforcements I can get. I'd love to find a great suburb there and if I can convince hubby, it will be worth it. He likes suburban life as well but he thinks NY is too expensive. I'm working on him. I'm wearing him down, gurrrl, bit by bit . . . :-)

New York City. Every religion and race in the world is present here. Right around 10 million I'm told.
Considering all that we get along fairly well with each other. New York City as a society works. If we can make New York work we can make the world work also.

Outside of this great city there are two groups of persons. Those who want to come here to live, and those who hate everything about us.

I've seen London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence, Vienna, Berlin, Barcelona, and most of the other large cities in Europe. They are all fine and the folk there should be proud of their cities, as proud as I am of mine.

Funny thing is, and I've met quite a few who have experienced this, that the moment they stepped into the city they knew "This is where I belong."

I've been lucky enough to have been in all the cities you mentioned, but NYC is hands down the greatest city in the world. But, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I am not a New Yorker, but I finally visited NYC in May 2008. As soon as my foot hit the pavement I felt at home. And not in a cliche sense, but I really felt this level of comfort that I have NEVER felt before. It was as if an entirely new version of me appeared while I was in NYC. I felt this surge of creativity and finally started writing again, something I greatly missed doing. Once I returned to my great home town the feeling started to gradually disappear. I am moving there eventually - would be there now but the economy pushed back my plans a bit.

I love NYC, just like my shirt says. I loved the pictures and some of them really brought back memories (like the meatpacking district - I was on Christopher St every night). Thanks for reminding me that I have a greater future to strive for than what I can expect now.

(and to the Brooklyn native who's picture caption mentioned the "shifting palimpsest that is New York." I never knew that word until today and it is the exact word I need to describe your city.

Great pics but the reality of The City are not so picturesque.
(still grumpy about the fare hike)

New York's great if you love garbage, graffiti, noise, and breathing fumes everywhere you go. Not to mention everything is expensive and the people are all jerks. Why anyone lives in a city is beyond me.

Well, I'm glad you don't live here, if that is all you see.

The last garbage strike we had was about 25 years ago, and since the ad-hoc death penalty for graffitists, that's hardly a problem in Manhattan. To see graffiti now, you have to go into an art gallery in Soho. Since Giuliani and Bloomberg made the city safe for yokels from Kansas City, being paid way too much money on Wall street, most of the jerks are probably more intelligent and ambitious versions of yourself and your high school buddies.

Did everything you know about NYC come from watching the original "Taking of Pelham 1,2,3" from the '70s?

"To see graffiti now, you have to go into an art gallery in Soho."

You're joking, aren't you? Do you even live here?

The Ground Zero photo should be removed, I'm a Native New Yorker and I'm getting tired of the Police Sychophants using Ground Zero to extort more money from the public. They know that as soon as they put some new buildings up, people will stop saying Ground Zero.

A much better view on to New York City then any of those new york based "reality" shows present. They hide the real complexity of the city behind overly polished stereotypes.
