LONDON (AP) Madonna paid tribute to Michael Jackson on Saturday night in the same arena where he was to stage his comeback, dancing along with an impersonator doing Jackson's distinctive moves.

Jackson, who died last week, was to begin a series of 50 concerts at the 23,000-seat O2 starting July 13.

A picture of a young Michael Jackson appeared on stage while Madonna was performing "Holiday," then the impersonator came on, wearing a sequined jacket, white T-shirt, white glove and white socks in the Jackson manner.

The music then switched to Jackson's song, "Wanna Be Starting Something," and the impersonator worked through Jackson's moves, including the famous moonwalk. The impersonator didn't sing.

After the number, Madonna told the crowd, "Let's give it up for one of the greatest artists the world has ever known," and the crowd roared its approval.

The impersonator's appearance would not have surprised anyone paying close attention to Madonna's Web site, which had a picture of him dancing in rehearsal.

An estimated crowd of 17,000, including the fashion designer Valentino, turned out for Madonna's concert, the first of two this weekend in London on her "Sticky & Sweet" tour.

In the last dance, Madonna and her dancers all donned jeweled gloves on their right hands in a simple tribute. Behind the stage some words from Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" were flashed up briefly: "If you want to make the world a better place look inside yourself and make a change."

Yu Yin, a 29-year-old student from Beijing, rated the Jackson tribute as the high point of the concert "because she chose a picture of a young Michael which shows me she has an understanding of his lack of childhood life."

"I expected a bit more, but it was tastefully done," said Jane Gadhia, 47, who said she thought Madonna would choose to sing a Jackson song.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Madonna had said she was "terribly sad" about Jackson's death.

"To be able to do what he did at such an early age was unearthly, everybody grew up in awe of him," The Sun quoted her as saying.

"To work with him and become friends, and hang out with him, was exciting for me. I used to love picking his brains about musical stuff."

Madonna is insane.

How fitting. MJ was the oddest looking and acting person in Hollywood, and Madonna is a close second.

I thought it was a very classy tribute and very nice of her to do. She didn't have to acknowledge him at all. It was a tribute - all the people writing negative things here need to get out of their parent's basement and get a life.

Nothing Madonna does is classy.

Any mention of who the impersonator was? He actually was very good. Would be nice for the impersonator to get some recognition too Madonna.

Look, I have no problem with Madonnas' having a tribute concert for Michael Jackson, but; is it really about him? Madonna, like Michael, have this obsessive need for attention, based upon some kind of childhood deficiency in nurturing; which I have always found disturbing. None of us grew-up like the Cleavers (thank God), but you hope that at a certain point, people can find a way to reconcile their shortcomings. Michael dealt with it through plastic surgery and drugs, Madonna deals with it by catering to an obsessive body image, and a need for constant attention. I'm not saying she's not a good person, or that she's not talented, or that she hasn't made a tremendous contribution both musically and philanthropically. What I am saying however, is that the continuing narcissism became boring a long time ago. I hope that one day, after she raises her children, that she has an opportunity to go live in a cave somewhere for a few years, and find-out who she really is, because in the end, her body will turn to dust, just like everybody else's. The only thing you take with you is YOU, but you need to take the time to find-out what YOU is.

Is there something that you see there that causes you to believe that this was something other than a tribute to Michael Jackson? I don't but then, I am neither looking for it nor biased that it is likely something else that falls in the self-serving category. Are we a suspicious people all day...everyday ... always questioning the other fella/gals motives for any attempt at doing good? I think it is called cynicism.

"Even the Pope has a "obsessive need for Attention"

being the pope is a generally a tremendous burden. think of how it beat JPII down.

I think this was a refreshingly non-maudlin tribute...

And fitting (Madonna did a medley of Like A Virgin / Billie Jean on her 1985 tour)

Long live the Queen of Pop!

Last night, July 4th, at Newport Beach Jazz fest with Marion Meadows, Paul Taylor & Michael Leighten (sp), MJ greatest hits were played, during the break while the fireworks blaze, and everyone dance, and sang in the aisles, lawns, and in their seats.

I think MJ will be remenbered at just about all musical concerts for the remainder of 2009.
