WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama warned on Saturday "there will be difficult days ahead" in Iraq and said the U.S. will remain a strong partner to Iraq for its security.

Obama, speaking to military families invited to the White House for Independence Day festivities, praised Iraq's independence and thanked troops for their service. Because of the courage, capability and commitment of soldiers who have served in Iraq, the country is now "taking control of its own destiny," he said.

"Iraq's future now rests in the hands of its own people. As extraordinary an accomplishment as that is, we know that this transition won't be without problems," Obama said. "We know there will be difficult days ahead. And that's why we will remain a strong partner to the Iraqi people on behalf of their security and prosperity."

Combat troops this week withdrew from Iraqi cities as part of a security pact that calls for a full withdrawal by the end of 2011. But concerns are growing that a lack of political progress is fueling violence in Iraq.

A roadside bomb exploded Saturday in a town south of Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding five others, police said.

Violence remains at low levels in Iraq compared with previous years, but a series of bombings that killed scores of people raised concerns about the run-up to the parliamentary elections. At least 447 Iraqi civilians were killed in June, double the toll from the previous month, according to an Associated Press tally.

Obama told service members they were "the latest, strongest link in that unbroken chain that stretches back to the Continental Army." Speaking to those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Obama said the U.S. military has taken on terror and extremism that threaten the world's stability.

"I'm proud to be your commander in chief," Obama said. "That's why, this Fourth of July, I renew my pledge to each and every one of you _ that for as long as I have that immeasurable honor, you will always have the equipment and support you need to get the job done."

Obama also took note of Vice President Joe Biden, who celebrated Independence Day with U.S. troops in Iraq.

The White House invited hundreds of military families to attend the Fourth of July gathering on the White House South Lawn. The celebration included volleyball and refreshments such as hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, ice cream and lemonade.

Obama daughters Sasha and Malia joined their parents as the president addressed the military families from a balcony decorated with red, white and blue bunting. Malia Obama turned 11 Saturday.

"I should say that there's also one girl in particular who's just thrilled that all of you are here _ and that is Malia Obama, because this happens to be her birthday, as well," Obama said, drawing applause. "When she was younger, I used to say that all these fireworks were for her. I'm not sure she still buys that."

Nearby on the National Mall, thousands gathered for a Fourth of July celebration that included a performance by singer Barry Manilow. Fireworks lit up the national monuments as a band played a medley of patriotic music.

Speaking to a group of Democrats just before the holiday President Obama said "Liberal Advocacy Groups" ought to drop their attacks on Democratic lawmakers and devote their energy to promoting passage of comprehensive legislation."
Would those be the same "Liberal Advocacy Groups" that elected you?
Obama said in regards to his policies we disagree with "Make me do it".
Okay DFHs get out there and call and support Single Payer Health care. We are not being thrown under this bus.

The President said that with a wink, wink! Don't you get it? In order to get what he wants, he have to act as if he understand their plight about being pressure from the left groups. don't be fooled! Continue to press on!!

Look, there's no way we're getting Single Payer Healthcare out of this Congress -- it's all we can hope for to get them (the Democrats) to work with the President to get a public option. That's where all of our energy should be -- faxing, calling, emailing Democratic members of Congress, especially those in the so-called Center, to remind them that they are Democrats, not Republicans, and Democratic voters want, make that demand, a public option.

To go Single Payer at this time would mean scrapping the entire present system and starting from scratch -- the country just doesn't have the time, the money nor the votes to get that done right now. It would take too long, and too many Congresspeople (of both parties) are in bed with the money-sharing lobbyists.

Obama needs to address the situation with former U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney it is a outrage in my point of view that a former POTUS candidate has been kidnapped by the rouge state of Israel through naval piracy. No one in this administration has yet to come forth and demand the immediate release of Cynthia McKinney.

But of course Obama has time for a bbq, fireworks the whole lot and yet does not even care to lift one finger to help a fellow American. A bitter sweet independence day for many.

Freedom for all political prisoners now!

It's true. Everybody wants him to fulfill their wish NOW. When did reality abandon this country? The administration has already done so much good but not everything can be done and undone in 6 months.
It's maddening!

I think it's sad that we cant be fans w/out being intrusive. Maybe she had a miscarriage, and she's wearing those outfits for a reason. Maybe she is self conscious about her stomach, who knows. But to still go on on this endless tangent of pregnancy is insulting and intrusive. Especially when I doubt you have a flat stomach.

Yes, I know what you are saying, but , she really looks pregnant. I know the look, for I work in that field, she is pregnant! Michelle always kept her weight down, at this moment she looks different. She is glowing, with an enlarge chest and she has gained weight with an enlarge stomach. So, it's a matter to time until they reveal the truth!

I'm going to lay off of HP for awhile. I need a break from all this B.S. going back and forth. One thing Michael Jackson sudden death reminded me of, and that is that tomorrow isn't promise to anyone. You can be here one minute and gone the next. So I want to live my life, to try to do something to help people, not sit behind a computer and bitch about everything and blame President Obama for every thing. Peace and strength to the Jackson Family. MJ will be missed. To everyone out there, take care and remember when all else have fell, try God. Love and Peace.

Right, bigbagga. And if there wasn't a celebration at the White House, you'd be writing how unpatriotic Obama is.

Not to be the youknowwhat in the punchbowl, but I wonder just how many gays were included in this event. There probably weren't many--if any. Until we jettison DADT and DOMA the military personnel and their families--and all other Americans are not being included in the American dream--and we can not truly celebrate the Fourth of July until we are.

Sorry, I just had to bring up the subject. Excuse me if I stepped on any toes. But, gays still are a major component of the military--and America. And, as the current law dictates, gays must lie and deceive just to survive in their chosen careers. Is that fair? It's too bad and a shame so many like Lt. Col. Choi (an Arabic translator) are being kicked out of the military simply because they are gay. This is wrong! Wake up America before it's too late. BTW, I have many ancestors who fought in the revolutionary war--so, I have a lot of respect for this holiday.

Something to think about over the 4th while you down your 5th:

When you do NOT FUND the REAL Economy you end up with a FAILED REAL Economy! Simple isn't it?

The FAKE Wall Street Economy with its ENRON Loophole LEAK "OFF-The-Books" and its wipe-out of Mark-to-Market is doing great with the $12.8 Trillion in FED and Government Money!

Why don't banks loan to industries anymore?

Because they have FAKE Investments that separate Risk from Investing and isn't that what Investment Bankers have become, BIG FAKES who are afraid of Real Companies with REAL RISKS?

When you do NOT FUND the REAL Economy you end up with a FAILED REAL Economy! Simple isn't it?

"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our selection between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat in our drink, in our necessities and comforts, in our labors and in our amusements, for our callings and our creeds...our people.. must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live. We have not time to think, no means of calling the mis-managers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow suffers. Our landholders, too...retaining indeed the title and stewardship of estates called theirs, but held really in trust for the treasury, must...be contented with penury, obscurity and exile.. private fortunes are destroyed by public as well as by private extravagance. This is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering... And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression." --Thomas Jefferson
