NEW YORK — Roland Martin will anchor a new Sunday public affairs show aimed at a black audience that will debut in September on the TV One network.

The "Washington Watch" program aims to tap into a new interest in politics and government due to the election of President Barack Obama, said Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's president and CEO. It debuts Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, and the show will be repeated each week at 5 p.m.

Martin, who is also a CNN commentator, will interview newsmakers and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. April Ryan, White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, and Robert Traynham, Philadelphia Tribune columnist and Comcast host, will be regular panel members. TV One is in about 48 million homes, a little less than half of the nation's TV homes.

Rodgers said it dawned on him when TV One covered last year's Democratic convention and he saw many Black Caucus members trudge up to the network's temporary rooftop studio for interviews: These politicians have few outlets to talk about their issues and people have few places to hear them.

"I hope to get smart, intelligent, entertaining conversation," Rodgers said, "but I put this under the public affairs arena. It doesn't have to be a ratings success."

Despite the election of the nation's first black president, many of TV One's older viewers _ the network tends to get an older audience than competitor BET _ wonder whether his administration will actively push a civil rights agenda and other issues that interest them, he said.

"Barack Obama is truly the American president," Rodgers said. "He is not the white American president or the black American president. He is our president. A number of our viewers might have had a different expectation."

Martin said he hoped the show would reflect the state of black America every week.

While the show is Washington-based, he said the concerns of people across the country would be reflected. He said he hopes to have viewers participate in the shows by suggesting questions and topics.

"We want to be bottom up," he said. "The problems I see right now from so many of these shows is that they are top down _ these are the things that we think are important."

Rodgers said he initially wanted the show to first air in the late afternoon or evening, to distinguish it from the crowded field of Sunday morning public affairs shows. But he was advised that premiering "Washington Watch" at that hour during football season would be suicidal.

L'Oreal Found Guilty Of Racial Discrimination
L'Oreal's target market is White women. L'Oreal should be able to "discriminate" who market's their products. I'm going to enjoy seeing an end to political correctness. I'll make sure to buy a bottle of L'Oreal shampoo when I go to the store this evening as well. :D

I would bet that most of the "black related issues" people are talking about would be of little interest to affluent blacks, yet of great importance to less affluent whites.

Race is just a diversion. It's all class warfare.

I've been saying that the current problem is 'class' and the gap between the rich and poor for the past two days on this thread and they've been beating me up over it ;(
Race is a diversion ... it all has to do with if a person is well off or poor, no matter of the skin color.
There are different realities here in the USA and it has to do with how much money a person has.

but to get my vote in 2012, he needs to really enact some CHANGE.

I am glad that this article is no longer on the front page.
The amount of dislike of white people that has been shown in the comments is uncalled for and the slurs directed towards Caucasians are offense. If the comments on this thread are an example of how people really think then unity and peace in America is far from being a reality. Perhaps it will take a few more generations dy.ing off before we can truly become ONE NATION. There are quite a few folks that should be ashamed of themselves.

On some forums and threads, you get the ha ters of one type; on others, the ha ters of another type.

I find it profoundly saddening, too. For this cr ap I marched with Jesse Jackson, demonstrated and got beat up by cops back in the early 80s?!

I choose to hope that the ha ters, the separatists, the folks consumed by resentment and revenge, are not ubiquitous, merely loud and persistent.

Keep believing in the vision of Dr. King -- "judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character", and seek out people of goodwill, of all beautiful shades and hues. Together we shall overcome.

Could a white man host the exact same show Roland Martin plans to do?

Or is the idea that black viewers will only watch black hosts talk about black topics?

If that is your argument, then networks are RIGHT (and not wrong) for having mostly white hosts, etc. since there are more whites.

Actually, blacks are 12% of the population, I would bet good money that they are more than 12 % of newscasters. Every local newscast I have ever seen is one white anchor and one black anchor.

There are so many examples of devastating racism still in our society, in criminal justice and education mostly...why waste time on this?

There are two arguments that get repeated over and over.

1- White people don't need their own channels/shows/etc. because ALL of the MSM news is for white people. Minorities therefore need there own.

2- That there need to be more minorities on MSM newscasts, etc.

QUESTION - If there are more minority anchors on MSM and cable news....

1- Will there STILL be a need for BET, etc.?

2- Will there NOW be a need for white specific channels/shows/etc.?

I'll just say again, as a white man, I don't relate any better or any more to, say, Chuck Todd, than I do Roland Martin...so I don't see why the opposite isn't true for others...

If your Chris Mathews and Keith O would cover the Black related issues the need would not be there. They don't. They have their version of "issues" they want to advance. Hence, their viewpoint is the one that you hear and it is slanted.

I am not understanding why you are not understanding the complaint is about the content of the shows. Well at least in my case it is the content.

Looks like this story is not on front page anymore. The story on Marion Barry is more newsworthy. Yeah right
Talk about controlling content and setting agenda's. Actually, I don't see this story anywhere. I could be wrong.

It really isn't very news worthy that TV1 is adding a new show.
Networks add and cancel shows all the time and most of them don't get any write-ups.
But when a current D.C. Council member is arrested for stalking THAT IS NEWS!
Were you complaining when the MSM was covering Blagojevich, Sanford, Ensign, Spitzer? Or do you only holler when it is an AA that doesn't something wrong?

No one cares about Marion Barry stalking. To me that is not even news. This article had 750 some comments this morning and I noticed it had been removed. If you look on the front page you will see they have articles that have been on that page for days with less comments.

TV1 does not need the arcane "race designation" in their marketing. Suffice it to say that we have always been so segregated in this country that we concede certain demographics by "aiming."

That type targeting should be for the planning boards and NOT for public consumption. It's like they have already limited the viewing audience by telling anyone who's not black - not to watch - it ain't for you.

The fact that it airs on TV1, should be enough. It does not have to promoted as a "black program". Let the viewers decide who the show appeals to.

Well said!

I am "white", but most of the music I play and listen to is considered "black" -- Marvin Gaye, Stevie, Parliament, Ohio Players, EWF, Arrested Development for example). Most of the marketing is done without mentioning "race", using genre instead ("soul", "R&B", "funk").

The rare lapses in that approach I find really grating, e.g., when a record store has a sign for a section that says "Black Music". WTF? Where's the "White" water fountain and the "black" restroom while we're at it? What, are we in Selma 1962? Johannesburg 1972? Is Sly & the Family Stone "white" or "black", considering the mixture of musicians? Are the Beatles "for white people" and Billy Preston for "black people" -- and if so, what about all their collaborations, who's allowed to listen to those?

Racism and race-obsession are so tiresome, costly and immoral. I refuse to listen to the Jonas Bros or country music just because I have a few less melanin molecules in my skin cells.

Put out good material, and see who comes to watch/listen/buy.

We can pretty much figure out (by watching and listening once) that ABC, Foxnews, Clearchannel and MSNBC is for "why tes-only". No messy rac ial - designation needed.

The only reason you don't see more of these types of programs is that Black entrepreneurs still confront financial barriers that require heroic-scale efforts to overcome, especially in aquiring seed capital. If there is anything Obama should do in addressing the concerns of the Black community while he's taking care of white people is specifically help Blacks in this regard.

I'd like to see at least four or five more cable channels specifically focusing on Black concerns. You already have over 100 focusing on white concerns and their worldviews.

This is a smart move by TV1, Roland has definitely been a rising star in the Democratic Party as well as on the national scene. I for one enjoyed him during Campbell Brown's maternity leave, and look forward to watching him on Sundays. Unfortunately some will say this is "racism", but it's called tapping into key demographics. It's smart television, and it's about time politics focus on minorities...congrats Roland!!!

If they were smart they would do some news programming at night to counter the white talking heads. I know this takes money etc. I think they would find they may be able to compete (somewhat) with the big boys

Blacks in Anmerica need this! This is what former Congressman J.C. Watts was talking about. We, as Black people, need a network that reflects our point of view, not the ones we currently have where the agenda is to marginalize and degrade Blacks. I will be watching and I will e-mail all my friends to watch!

No, all people in America need this; for it is our sense of disconnection based on superficial distinctions that make us weak, as a body politic, and as a nation.

"Blacks in Anmerica need this! This is what former Congressman J.C. Watts was talking about"

Please do not think that because we are black, that we have anything else in common with JC Watts. He is worst than Michael Steele and as much a self-hater as Clarence Thomas.

America needs a more diverse representation of our culture, but it should become more main stream and NOT more separate but equal. We need a voice that is as respected in any arena, not one over in the corner speaking only to a few who look alike.

We must broaden our reach - not limit it.

How do we broaden our reach? It is about control of the agenda, Those in charge will not give up their power and control to help AA's. Its proven with what we see on cable news networks currently.
