There is a universal wisdom to healthy eating. Pile on the fruits, vegetables and whole grains and skip the meat and saturated fat. Consume everything in moderation, especially alcohol.

But certain cultures around the world offer further insight with traditional diets that are not just healthy, they also protect our bodies against scourges like cancer, depression, diabetes and heart disease. Researchers believe that following such diets can lead to excellent health; making the transition, however, requires more than just adopting an Americanized version of another culture's traditional diet.

I highly recommend that people read Roy's books. They're chock full of a lot of ancient wisdom and up-to-the-minute modern science relating to how we eat.

Another article that yet again stresses the importance of fruits, veggies, and whole grains over the traditional high fat and meat diet of the U.S. I just switched to a vegetarian diet myself and substitute rice milk for cow's milk. If we all made improvements on our diet we could go a long way in reducing overall health care costs for both us and America - http://rxvette.blogspot.com/2009/06/biggest-key-to-health-care-reform-in-us.html

Healthy eating is surely a good way to prevent or manage diabetes and eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and avoiding saturated fat is part and parcel of this. But you are right. Other cultures have their way of eating that can help prevent diseases like diabetes. So thank you for this insight.

As a research scientist and author of several books on illness prevention, I have spent decades looking for answers to the simple question "What should I eat to remain healthy?" My research took me into the fields of zoology, paleopathology, primatology, botany, zoopharmacognosy, and biology in an attempt to discern what Nature intended for us, as opposed to what I or others might want to believe. The results of this research are quite shocking, to say the least, resulting in an eating plan that looks nothing like what you might expect, and apparently had never been in print before.

The various diets mentioned in this article are all very interesting, but none of them derive from cultures that are really ancient, considering the hominid heritage of about 2.5 million years. The Original Diet is derived from what is arguably the largest "clinical trial" of our species, extending over about 100,000 generations. I have been following the plan for more than a decade with outstanding results.

For those interested in new hypotheses and experiments in the area of nature-based illness prevention, see "The Wellness Project," or "The Original Diet - The Omnivore's Solution," designed by nature and researched by me. Ask your librarian for a copy.
