NEW YORK — Music manager Allen Klein, a no-holds-barred businessman who bulldozed his way into and out of deals with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, died Saturday, a publicist for his company said. He was 77.

Klein, who was one of the most powerful figures in the music business in the 1960s but ended up feuding with some of his biggest clients, died at his New York City home of Alzheimer's disease, said Bob Merlis, publicist for ABKCO Music & Records.

An accountant known for his brashness, temper and tenacity in tracking down royalties and getting better record deals, Klein garnered clients including Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin and Herman's Hermits.

But he became most famous _ and later infamous _ for signing on the Rolling Stones and then the Beatles. Both arrangements eventually spurred lawsuits, with some Beatles fans blaming Klein for contributing to the tensions that broke up the group.

Klein was convicted of tax fraud in 1979 and served two months in prison for failing to report income from sales of promotional records by the Beatles and other groups; the records were supposed to be given away. The Rolling Stones grew so infuriated with Klein _ whose company still owns an enormous chunk of their 1960s songs _ that Mick Jagger once chased him down the hall of a posh hotel.

Klein was reputed to be the basis for the slick manager "Ron Decline," played by Jon Belushi, in the parodic 1978 film "The Rutles," and the inspiration for John Lennon's bitter 1974 song "Steel and Glass."

Regardless, Klein remained "very proud of the position he was in and what he was able to do with the different artists he was able to work with," Merlis said.

Klein began building his reputation by auditing record companies' books and finding unpaid royalties for Darin and other artists. After meeting Cooke in 1962, he helped the soul singer secure a then-unusual level of control over his music and finances.

Story continues below

"I never wanted to be a manager," he told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., in 2002. "It was going over the books that I loved. And I was good at it."

That helped him win over the Rolling Stones, who hired him in the mid-1960s. He helped the group negotiate a new contract with its label, but the relationship soured after Klein bought the rights to the band's 1960s songs and recordings from a former manager.

He was fired in 1970, but the animosity continued for decades, culminating in dueling lawsuits over rights and royalties and a 1984 trial. Jagger testified in a federal court in New York that Klein "wanted a hold on us, on our futures" _ and that a 1974 discussion about money ended with a shouting Jagger chasing Klein down a corridor at London's Savoy Hotel. The lawsuit was settled soon after, with Klein keeping the song rights but agreeing to pay royalties promptly.

In the meantime, Klein had set his sights on managing the Beatles and saw his chance when their longtime manager, Brian Epstein, died in 1967.

Initially rebuffed, Klein eventually won John Lennon's favor.

"He not only knew my work, and the lyrics that I had written, but he also understood them, and from way back. That was it," Lennon told an interviewer in 1970.

The group hired Klein in 1969 over the objections of Paul McCartney, who preferred his father-in-law, Lee Eastman.

At the time, a New York Times profile referred to Klein as "the toughest wheeler-dealer in the pop jungle." Klein himself once sent out a chest-beating holiday card with a profane takeoff on the 23rd Psalm: "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, because I'm the biggest bastard in the valley."

But his relationship with the Beatles was bitter and short-lived. The group broke up the next year, and McCartney sued his bandmates in an effort to break free from Klein, an action once unthinkable among the harmonious foursome. McCartney went on to revile Klein in a 1997 biography, "Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now."

The other Beatles lost faith in Klein and sued him in the mid-1970s. Lennon sent him off in song in "Steel and Glass," which describes how "your mouthpiece squawks as he spreads your lies."

Klein was born in Newark on Dec. 18, 1931, and spent several years in an orphanage after his mother's death during his infancy. He was later raised by a grandmother and an aunt.

Klein graduated from Upsala College and served in the U.S. Army before joining a Manhattan accounting firm, according to his company.

He started his own firm, which later became ABKCO, in the late 1950s. Besides managing music, he co-produced 1971's "The Concert for Bangladesh," a forerunner of modern charity concerts, and films including 1978's "The Greek Tycoon," starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset.

He is survived by a longtime companion, Iris Keitel; his estranged wife, Betty; three children, four grandchildren and a sister.

I think the most charitable thing that can be said about Allen Klein is that he was not a nice man. How ironic that he should expire a day after the fortieth anniversary of Brian Jones's death.

CNN is eroneous in stating he managed Bobby Darin. Klein approached Darin to state that he could get him back royalties, which was his calling card. After finding nothing, they told him to get lost. It is in Darin's bio.
As for Sam Cooke, without implicating anyone--do you honestly think that Mr.Soul , one of the first black artists to produce young black talent from his Liemert Park studio in south LA, would name his catalog after his baby daughter and want it in the hands of such a man? If you believe that, then you believe Sam died after attempting to kidnap and rape a woman arrested for soliciting a cop for prostitution.

R.I.P. Allen Klein. Met the man twice with the late Jimmy Miller. I remember Allen's son working on a 3 track machine and playing us some production work by Sam Cooke circa 1988

To everybody that wants to be a star, these are the kinds of people you'll have to put up with to attain that goal and to stay on top.

Ripping off starving children after the Bangla Desh concert and album was a very revealing low, even for him. Yoko was John's love so people should know better than to be disrespectful to her. Klein set out to rip off the Beatles, Stones and the other artists signed to him. Rev. Bookburn - Radio Volta

People always slam Yoko. It's just a lot easier to say "she broke up the Beatles" than actually speaking the truth about the Beatles breakup, which was much more complex.

Agree 110%.

John wanted out, but was too scared to do it himself so in many ways he "used" Yoko" as a wedge. He knew it would be infuriating for Yoko to be injected into recording sessions and such and he knew it wouldnt take long till the guys got fed up with it.
It was the world's most famous case of the classic male ploy "its no you, its me".

RIP John, we still miss you.

he did indirectly because Klein played John by being the only person in the world who was nice to her. Paul tried to get John to see through it, but couldn't.

Few of us who followed The Beatles believed in The Sun King. McCartney was vindicated and the others came late to the party. Irrespective of Klein's part, the break up was coming anyway. He was only part of the puzzle. While it is convenient to search for someone who is 'the cause' (as we are witnessing with Michael Jackson), neither Klein nor Yoko were solely responsible. The times, temperament, creative differences, personal relationships, and weariness all contributed to the crash. As much as I personally hated to see the break up, I would have hated even more to see them 'as a group' become irrelevant musically.

RIP Allen Klein ... despite his reputation and many of the comments here he did some good business for many of his clients, especially The Beatles who through the ill-equipped dealings of Brian Epstein were labouring under some of the worst deals imaginable for the majority of the career.

A victim of the image he created for himself, I guess. Those looking for a villain would be better served looking at the 1960s record companies and publishers he fought to the benefit of his clients.

Condolences to Klein's family and friends.

Klein produced two great films by the brilliant Alejandro Jodorowsky, El Topo and The Holy Mountain. They were major cult hits of their day (and are still awesome today). Klein and Jodorowsky feuded for years over the films (Klein engaged Jodorowsky to direct an adaptation of The Story of O, and Jodorowsky pulled out suddenly, angering Klein), and in retaliation Klein withheld the distribution rights for El Topo and The Holy Mountain for many years. The copies of El Topo and The Holy Mountain that circulated were mostly bootlegs, unlicensed, poor, censored transfers.

However a few years back, at the behest of Klein's son, Allen and Jodorowsky made peace with each other. Klein (and ABCKO) restored El Topo and The Holy Mountain digitially, and re-released them to theaters and on DVD. Jodorowsky said in the commentary on The Holy Mountain that it is wonderful to forgive your enemies, and that he was happy that Klein and he made their peace.

Klein did some good out there. Sure, he was a bastard at times, but there were times he was cool.

Have you seen these films? To call these films good is a stretch. So you have his clients calling him a crook and these two bad films -- he was the Bernie Madoff of his day.

That is not what Jodorowsky says on the Bright Lights website. Klein went ballistic when AJ declined to use Klein's recommendation of the Stones for the film score Anyway, who iwas he to witthold distribution rights? Just another egomanaical demigod.

To have seen the giants of the music business up close and personal as he did would have been something to behold.

He didn't even like music nor respect musicians. Up close? He was too busy putting both hands in their pockets. He did not manage Bobby Darin. That is erroneous, CNN! . Darin's manager said that Klein promised he could get them back royalties--which is what he told every single group he attempted to rep. Manager reports they found nothing and stated "it was a waste of time." Peter Noone's website for Herman's Hermits tells of badmouthing Klein "every chance he gets." Noone, like ? and the Mysterians, The Animals, and countless others had to re-record all of their song catalog as Klein ran off with all of it. Imagine you create something from yoiur soul and this depraved thug just inks his name on it. Sam Cooke's family tells the tale that on Dec 10 Sam discovered his Tracey Ld. Company had been hijacked, Klein making himself a vice president while omitting Sam's dad's name, which had always been used by Sam as a "just in case" vote. Dec. 11, 1964 Sam is shot dead. LAPD evidence missing for years. Not saying Klein did or didn't have anything to do with it. Question is, who profited the most?

I'd feel sorry for the Stones if they weren't so rich. They got screwed over badly by their first 2 managers, Andrew Loog Oldham and Klein.

THINK HE OD'ED.. YEARS AGO..

oh I had the big kick working on the same film sound stage where LET IT BE was done.. TWICKENHAM STUDIOS.. such a small one, too,

also working with it's director MICHAEL LYNDSEY-HOGG.. I kept thinking of the Beatles.
Allen Klein was eventually sued by John & Yoko.. the estrangement with Paul happened bec Paul decided to have his new in-laws take care of his money.. wisely too as it turned out--as it made him the richest of the Beatles, & in pop.
