Poll: Majority Of South Carolinians Want Sanford Out

A new poll suggests that a majority of people in South Carolina want Governor Mark Sanford to resign.

The poll, released by Survey USA, measured the responses of 500 South Carolinians one week after Sanford made his now-infamous confession.

Asked whether or not the governor should resign, 69% said they wanted Sanford to step down, while only 28% wanted him to remain in office.

Fifty-eight percent said Lieutenant Gov. Andre Bauer is completely or somewhat prepared to be governor.

The results showed significant differences of opinion among the various groups polled. While 70% of women said Sanford should resign, men were slightly more forgiving: Only 66% said the governor should step down.

A larger divide separated Democrats and Republicans. While 39% of Republicans said they think the governor should remain in office, only 12% of Democrats agreed.

One question that most people agreed on was whether or not Sanford has over-shared. When asked whether his confessions have revealed too much about Sanford's personal life, 78% of Republicans, 62% of Democrats and 63% of Independents all said, yes.

Despite the majority opinion against Sanford, only half of those polled said they think his career is "finished."
