LUBBOCK, Texas — Alberto Gonzales, who resigned as U.S. attorney general two years ago, is coming to Texas Tech this fall to teach political science.

Texas Tech Unversity System Chancellor Kent Hance confirmed the hiring on Tuesday.

It was first reported on the Austin American-Statesman in its online edition. A senior business assistant in Tech's political science department, Dora Rodriguez, told the newspaper that Gonzales will teach a "special topics" course on contemporary issues in the executive branch.

Gonzales served as then-Gov. George W. Bush's personal attorney, then was Texas secretary of state and a Texas Supreme Court justice before joining Bush in Washington.

As a current Texas Tech student I am deeply disturbed by this. However, I am also disgusted by the amount of people attacking the institution and its students. Texas Tech is heavily involved in various research projects sometimes even with Harvard, and it is not a dirt patch as I have seen some call it. Also, Texas Tech is not preparing its students for Denny's. In fact, many Tech alums have gone on to do great things. It is intriguing to me the amount of people who have said horrible things about this institution while at the same time butchering the English language. I am not pleased with this decision at all, but I think people who know nothing about this university need to keep their mouths firmly shut. Texas Tech is a fine university with outstanding students who are equipped to go out and do outstanding things. Many of the students are disturbed this announcement as well. The chancellor is a conservative man, and the university like many others in Texas is conservative. This is an issue that conservative and liberal students all agree will not go away. Might I remind all of you that Bill Ayers also has a teaching position at an excellent university. If he can have a job at a university then why can't Gonzales. Does anyone attack the University of Chicago or its students?

As a recent graduate of the Texas Tech School of Law, I will defend my school but not necessarily all of its decisions. After reading some of your posts it becomes all too apparent that cynicism ranks much higher on the scale than literacy. Alberto Gonzalez is teaching Poly Sci, and he is not teaching at the Law School. While the hiring might be questionable it was actually very smart. There are articles all over the internet, news, and in the papers tomorrow all of which drawing attention to the University. People with rational minds, while they might not agree with Alberto's political ideas will nonetheless know about Texas Tech. After all...America's Universities are the optimum form for the free flow of ideas. Please, bash the man if you disagree with him or his ideas, but do not bash an institution that is educating and providing an alternative point of view for its students. Just to provide you all with another point of view on this topic...I am literate, I am a professional, I graduated from Texas Tech School of Law, and I will place my education and degree right next to any other in the nation.

I don't care if he's teaching a course on cleaning the cats litter box. He has shown himself to be amoral at best, deceptive and misleading to the point where you could never really trust if he cleaned the litter or not. My cats health is of more importance in the scheme of human development than this wretched piece of work.

I would bash the school for hiring a criminal. That's all. Oh, and Bob Knight is a horror of a human being.

Now all I need to know is which corporations make donations to Texas Tech and boycott them.

After the secession, he'll be bumped right up to university president.

I hope he remembers his class schedules, classroom locations and lesson plans. His memory wasn't too good.
