Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, left, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney

Politicker NY:

Carolyn Maloney will turn 62 next year, so if serving in the U.S. Senate is the be-all, end-all goal of her career, then she should go ahead and challenge Kirsten Gillibrand in the Democratic primary. She's not likely to get another chance and there'd be nothing worse than living out her life wondering what would have happened if she'd gone for it.

Even if Carolyn Maloney were to win that seat, she is too old to ever get the kind of seniority that enables a senator to make a serious impact.

That's the kind of seniority Maloney presently enjoys in the House, however. It makes little sense to give all of that up, to run a risky race that could not only end Maloney's career, but could also cause that seat to revert to the GOP.

In terms of polls, it's very dangerous to underestimate the degree to which poll-responders are confusing Carolyn Maloney with the far-more-famous Carolyn McCarthy.
