NEW YORK — A giant audience formed for Michael Jackson's memorial service, as millions gathered in public, in front of televisions and at computer screens to experience the mourning of the celebrated pop star.

Chants of "Michael! Michael!" rang out in Harlem, where about 1,000 gathered to watch the memorial service on a giant screen live from Los Angeles' Staples Center.

A steady stream of fans _ wearing Jackson T-shirts and listening to hits like "Billie Jean" _ visited the singer's boyhood home in Gary, Ind.

"I felt like I needed to pay homage to 'the greatest,'" said 49-year-old, retired chemical operator Jackie Ford, who used to do Jackson's moonwalk and drove to Gary from Aberdeen, Miss.

The media-saturated event was expected to rival the online audience of even President Barack Obama's January inauguration _ which similarly was a daytime event witnessed by many on their computers at work.

Aside from the wall-to-wall coverage by the TV networks and cable news channels, the memorial service was streamed online by many news outlets and Web sites, including Hulu.com, MySpace.com and The New York Times' Web site. The Associated Press' online video network also offered a live broadcast.

The wealth of options in how one could experience the memorial service _ from cell phones to jumbo screens _ reflected the new, fractured media landscape that could perhaps only be unified by a boundary-crossing superstar from an earlier era.

Calculating just how many people in total watched the ceremony _ around the world and across all platforms _ will take several days and even then will likely have to resort to an approximation, given the huge variety of outlets.

Alan Wurtzel, chief of research at NBC Universal, called it "the first multi-platform significant culture event."

Several news organizations rolled out interactive features previously used for Obama's inauguration. CNN.com, ABC, MTV and E! Online integrated their live video with chatter from Facebook.

"This has a shot to be one of the biggest lives events we've hoisted up," said Kenneth "KC" Estenson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com.

Estenson noted, though, that live video on the Web is still in the nascent stage and can be "a dicey proposition." A huge swell of traffic _ and the heavy bandwidth of video _ can cause troubles across the Web.

Some congestion across the Web was likely, but most live streams appeared to run smoothly.

CNN said the site received 9.7 million live video streams globally as of 5 p.m. EDT. That's less than the 21.3 million streams Obama's inauguration reaped for CNN, but more than the 5.3 million streams it had on Election Day.

Facebook said there were about 800,000 user postings on the social networking site related to the live online broadcasts of its partners.

Akamai's Net Usage Index, which monitors global news consumption online, found that Web traffic to news sites spiked around the time of the funeral, topping at just under 4 million visitors per minute _ which ranks as moderately heavy traffic.

Keynote Systems Inc., which tracks Web site performance, found that the Internet performed "within reasonable levels" Tuesday, though there were slowdowns for some news sites.

That was in contrast to the initial reaction to Jackson's death on June 25, the news of which first spread online. The avalanche of traffic then temporarily brought Twitter, Wikipedia and AOL's instant messaging service to a crawl.

Cinedigm Digital Cinema Network carried the memorial service on its live digital network in about three dozen movie theaters nationwide.

Somber crowds watched the broadcast in New York's Times Square and in Harlem near the Apollo Theater, where the Jackson 5 won "Amateur Night" in 1967. Jackson impersonator Moses Harper, teary-eyed at the sight of the singer's casket, danced Jackson's version of "Ease on Down the Road," from the musical "The Wiz."

"I'm just grateful that I got to live in his time," said Harper.

In Detroit, where his career was launched with Motown Records, hundreds of people filled into the auditorium at Detroit's Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, where the memorial service was to be shown on a giant screen.

"He was somebody who really did change the style of music," said Jonathan Contreras, a 23-year-old college student from Westland, Mich. "They call him the King of Pop. I call him the King of Music."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland dedicated a special memorial wall to Jackson while the memorial service for the King of Pop took place. A candlelight vigil was planned for Tuesday evening.

Outside the White House in Washington, Rocky Twyman, a community activist, asked tourists to sign a "book of condolences" for Jackson's family.

"We consider him a national hero," said Twyman. "We want people to remember the good things he did."

About 17,500 attended the memorial service in downtown Los Angeles, including the Jackson family, numerous luminaries and 8,750 people who received two tickets from a drawing from 1.6 million. Memorial programs from the service were already being auctioned on eBay on Tuesday afternoon.

The 50-year-old singer's death brought an outpouring of grief and remembrance from fans across the globe. To a certain extent, the real memorializing of Jackson had already taken place in spontaneous urban gatherings, endless Twitter messages, thousands of YouTube postings and countless other forms of reaction.

Since then, some have grown tired of the continual news coverage of Jackson's death, believing it has overshadowed more important stories and that Jackson _ who was tried and acquitted of sexually abusing a child in 2005 _ doesn't deserve such attention.

A Pew Research Center poll published last week found that 64 percent of those surveyed said Jackson's death has received too much coverage. New York Rep. Peter King also released a YouTube video calling Jackson, who was acquitted of child molestation charges, a "pervert" and a "lowlife."

While many celebrated Jackson's life Tuesday, others shrugged off the spectacle. In Baltimore, a simulcast of Jackson's funeral at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, drew only about 10 people. Much of the crowd went about their business checking out books without seeming to notice the screen showing the memorial service.

Associated Press writers Ben Greene in Baltimore, Jim Irwin in Detroit, M.R. Kropko in Cleveland, Jennifer Peltz in New York, Caryn Rousseau in Gary, Ind., and Nafeesa Syeed in Washington and Television Writer David Bauder in New York contributed to this report.

The memorial was befitting of the King of Pop and Michael was just that, King of Pop as Donna Summer was Queen of Disco. The whole memorial was touching, then....Al Sharpton opened his political pie hole.

No Rev. Sharpton, he didn't invent the civil rights movement nor was he in the same light was MLK or others before him, nor did he invent dancing. People of different nations DID listen to Western Music long before MJ and they knew how to dance outrageously and uniquely prior to MJ's or Fred Astire (MJ's dance idol).

MJ wasn't the SOLE reason people around the world united around a common musical talent. Whites, Latins, Asians, listened to Jimmy Henricks, Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Classical, Country, you name it LONG before Jackson came into the scene in the 80's as a solo artist.

Michael Jackson was a talented entertainer whose music rocked and sooth us, yes he was generous to a lot of charities AS MANY wealthy folks are and should be, that is noteworthy. He was also a terribly exploited child star and a grown man whose personal ill begotten choices aren't worth any envy or praise. What is really sad is that during his life NOT once did we ever witness a GRAND BIRTHDAY BASH for Michael. Due to religious piousness his parents forbid any celebrations. Now that he is dead, by all means go all out. That is one of the sad realities of this mans existence.

Love Michael Jackson as an entertainer and always will. I must admit, the media coverage has been way over the top . It has been non-stop for almost 2 weeks.

And, I wouldn't say say MJ is the greatest entertainer of all time. There have been many great, great entertainers at certain times throughout our history.

That is a subjective statement...he touched the entire world and songs like We Are the World were seminal, though corny and brought a lot of awareness to a crisis.

What people don't get is that he was not just an "entertainer".

True.
He was also a pedophile.

"We are the World" was inspired and followed by Bob Geldof's "Do they know it's Christmas Time" Both where for charitable causes and promoted Live Aid series which Geldof also pulled together to help the Ethiopian famine victims. In the mid-80s. Every single Musician involved touch the world and each contributed his time and talent.

It really is subjective as stated.

I find that:

*Integrating R&B and pop music
*Paving the way for other black artists to reach the top 40 and have cross over radio play
*Integrating MTV
*Made an art form of and set a standard for videos that made sure that lazy videos like 99-Balloons were no longer acceptable
*Bringing the styles of the greats such as Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, and that Motown sound into the modern era to be forever imitated by those who followed
*The best selling album of all time
*Record breaking charitable giving
*Pioneering Aid events to help the world's unfortunate
*And a career that spanned 40 years far more important than you.

I would have to argue against this point, as the only thing required is to appeal to people beyond your "circle".

Other than that, excellent points, and all true

*Pioneering Aid events to help the world's unfortunate

"We are the World" was inspired and followed by Bob Geldof's "Do they know it's Christmas Time" Both where for charitable causes and promoted Live Aid series which Geldof also pulled together to help the Ethiopian famine victims. In the mid-80s. Every single Musician involved touch the world and each contributed his time and talent. Geldof was the pioneer during that time period. HOWEVER as far as other points outlined in Kas70 countdown.

One might want to brush up on history in particular the 40's - 60's use of musical talent and entertainers for humane causes as well as Black Artist who sold millions of records and had radio air time prior to MJ. As far as MTV, there was a WHOLE slew of videos up to par with that time period, MJ was just one of them.

Paving the way for Cross over music? Are you kidding me, girl do you know your music. Globally, people of all colors have been listening to Western Music LONG before MJ. Yes, hard to conceive but they did. The list is so long, from Classical to Country to Funk, Boogie, Disco, R&B, that road was paved from the very first Bluegrass vinyl and kept on going.

Geest, I loved Michael Jackson's contribution to the Pop Scene but please, don't go all out exaggerating and misinforming history.

That is true My Guy-O, that there have been other great entertainers throughout history, but how many you know have crossed generational, racial, cultural lines? Elvis was great also, but he was not that popular in the little African villages. He was more popular in America and in Europe. Michael Jackson's music was common in remote areas of the world. That's a valid description of being the greatest to me!

I am so happy to be part of the MJ generation. We get it. We understood Michael and will continue to celebrate his life after his death. To all of the people who post hateful comments, i feel sorry for you. I will no longer watch the network news and listen to the commentators any longer. Thank god for the net. I can tune out all of the venimous and ignorant comments these untalented people speak daily.

The fans are what made Micheal Jackson, and the reverse is also true, Michael made the fans. In spite of media perpetual coverage to paint him as strange and a suspected pedophile etc. etc. in recent years, the media and other outlets had no other choice but to succumb belief of people view of him. As I have said, the media did not like him. They conveniently forget that a person is innocent until proven guilty. They were so competitive in 'breaking the news' that they destroyed him in the process. (as they usually do with people's lives). They just followed leads of nonsensical nature, just to be the first to break 'news'. They helped destroyed him. But for people who continued to believe in MJ, I believe he realised that people still cared, no matter how much the naysayers (like Peter king) and other criticizers try to tarnish him. I do believe he died peacefully knowing his legacy will remain in people's hearts, not only as the top entertainer ever, but as a real and good person.

And I know huffington post may not post this because they are also a media outlet, but the fact is a fact. It is time the media report news, instead of reporting hear says. no wonder people go to internet nowadays instead of tuning in to American news outlets.

Love live the King!!

Let's set the record straight.
The term "King of Pop" was created by Michael Jackson for Michael Jackson and he demanded to be addressed as such. As much as I enjoyed his music and showmanship, the day I heard him say that was the day I stopped listening to him.
Time proved me right.

What are you blathering about? You stopped listening to him because he was over the top in his ability to market himself? And now millions if not billions are watching his memorial service?

What on Earth were you right about?

The phrase "King of Pop" was coined by Elizabeth Taylor and it stuck . . . MJ was too self effacing to have called himself so. (Although, and I agree, he did say that he was "Bad". :o) Love the man, love his music. RIP.

I think this is interesting that 2009 seems to be the definitive year of the African American. No more Black History Month. From Barack Obama to the Williams sisters to the Lakers to a ground breaking global simulcast celebrating the LIFE and MUSIC of Michael Jackson, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that this is Black Future Year! Live with it.

While the haters and creeps show their butts to the world, the Jackson family, a beautiful black family, conduct themselves with dignity and grace.

Listen, the fact is no one knows. Except those that accused MJ and MJ. So we cannot say for sure he was innocent nor can we say definitively he was guilty. There certainly was enough smoke but no one could prove there was a fire. He was a strange, talented, unpredictable man, that we know for sure.

I am so appalled that some of you people have shown your true colors during a time of condolences for a much loved human being.

First, there was no reason for you to say anything to disrespect this moment in time if you did not feel like being involved. Those of you who did are totally ill in your heart. You have no compassion for anyone other than yourself. Pure selfishness is your reason for this blatant disrespect.

I have seen HP monitor other condolences of fallen icons better than this one for sure. And I'm sorry for that.

I will forever remember the mean things said here for no reason other than to "be mean". You could have done so many other things during this time that could have been more meaningful. But you didn't. Do you take it upon yourself to go to people's funerals to speak so unkindly outside of HP?

May all that is mighty forgive you!

Asking myself if we are being lured by a get-rich-quick scheme from the MJ legal staff? Why do they not ask the grieving public to donate to MJ's favorite charity or non-profit?

And what ever happened to the rumors of his body being frozen upon death to be thawed out at a later date and time?

"The same energy is behind our myriad collective trances, from celebrity fixations to allowing the symbols displayed by our politicians to distract us from substance...snap out of it... are we deceiving ourselves and what is the cost of this deception?"
