In China, after problems with rabies in stray dogs, dog beating teams patrolled the streets, killing an estimated 36,000 dogs -- including some pets. Animal rights advocates hope that a new law will put an end to this form of animal cruelty.

They had specific instructions not to hit the dog in the boy. It brused the meat and made it harder to sell in the meat shops and restaurants.

The really impressive thing about China, with its ancient culture of medical knowledge, is how well it deals with a medical problem.

Next on the agenda, clubbing to de.ath of contagious common-cold-carriers.

It's not an "animal rights" law, it's an "animal welfare" law.

Two very different things.

And 36,000? Pffft, P. ETA has killed more animals than that.

From what I've read and seen on the news, China has had one of the worst animal abuse records in the world.

This new law marks a new beginning for the country. I sincerely hope it begins to change the way the Chinese generally think and feel about the treatment of animals.

Oh, I forgot. My first post will probably be censored because I named a real company. So, let me begin again...

I worked for a national retail establishment for 5 years. One year we received a shipment of ladies coats from China (printed all over the boxes) and we could not put them out for sale. Why? Because a) they smelled like wet dogs on hangers and b) it was obvious the fur collar wasn't a faux fur collar. The American Vendors should be ashamed -- very ashamed -- as well as the buyers who purchased the merchandise.

"Faux fur" is the fur of dogs and raccoons and the like. The "faux" part is added only to differentiate from expensive fur (sable, etc..)

Too many consumers assume or are misled (or don't care) about faux fur and believe it to be synthetic.

Yes, shame on the vendors and the buyers.

It is amazing how Americans go all berserk over the killing of dogs. Seems to me dogs are more important than humans. For all the faults of humans I still hold us above animals that includes dogs . Dog eat dog is not a myth as that is what they will do and maybe even humans but in no way is a dog on a humans level. Beastly creatures that a good portion of the world sees as a very inferior animal even in the world of animals.

Animals don't have rights? They have rights if we say they do. African Americans had no rights in this country until they "won" them. If humans pass the appropriate laws, animals will have the rights they should. As usual the "problem" presented by animals for humans are actually human problems not the fault of the animals. The "elephant problem", the "lion problem", etc. It is humans that refuse to curb our own population and live sustainably.

China cleared their street of dogs before the Beijing Olympics in the most cruel ways. The fur trim on cheap coats made is China is dog. As we crack down on Puppy Mills in the US, China and Russia are picking up the slack and often smuggling them in.

Abuse against animals will not stop until we the consumer makes it stop. Attention Walmart and Petland shoppers! You are the reason this abuse exists.

I'd go a step further and say that all the up to the minute fashionistas that are on waiting lists with breeders to get a portugese water spaniel, ala the Obamas, add to the puppy mill hoopla. I have 1 dog and 3 cats, all off the street or out of a shelter, currently fostering another dog taken in off the street.

Adopt, don't buy.

I cringe at the term "animal rights." Animals have no rights. The issue is one of human ethics and our obligation to treat animals humanely.

The repulsive hubris of the human species will be its ultimate undoing. As sentient beings animals absolutely have rights against abuse by a supposed more intelligent species.

If you used even a fraction of your brain, you would find some compassion and understanding of the rights of our fellow travelers on this planet.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:09 PM on 07/07/2009

Oh come on, people. As human beings, we should treat all things in a decent manner, but until they start paying taxes, dogs don't have "rights". You shouldn't run all over town breaking windows, either, but it's not because they have "rights".

Raker - you are exactly right. We should be good stewards of the animal kingdom, but that does not confer 'rights' on them. It's absurd.

Yes, Michaleenflynn, you have defined 'animal welfare'. With rights come responsibilities. Are animals going to serve on juries, pay taxes and do time if they break a law? Are we going to give them the vote? I hope not but 'animal rights' fanatics think they are equal to humans. "Animal rights" is crazy; "animal welfare"is important.

Go here to view how the Chinese treat animals on fur farms. This is gruesome. This is a drop in the bucket as to how China treats animals. American fur farms are not any better. Google it if you like and educate yourselves to the plight of animals raised for fur.

http://animalblawg.wordpress.com/2009/05/13/live-skinning-raccoon-dogs-and-other-tales-from-the-fur-farm/

I am glad the the pet owners in China are finally being heard by their government and the government is finally doing something now for the dogs at least. The Chinese have a long way to go for animal rights but at least they are going to take a first step. After all we are their caretakers "the compassion of a society is judged by the way it treats its animals".

Please don't go around spreading misinformation. I have worked on a fur farm. There are bad ones out there; they are reprehensible and should be shut down and the owners, in my humble opinion...well, clubbed is too good a fate for them. Same goes for puppy mills.

However, not all fur farms are as you describe. We worked very long, hard hours to make sure the cages were clean, the animals fed, healthy, comfortable and safe. They came first with us. None were treated at any time like the ones in these gruesome videos, nor like dogs in puppy mills. These animals were not discarded after their death, either. Their bodies went to anatomy classes for kids, and to help fertilize our fields. I plan a similar fate for my own body when I'm gone. And these animals are not forgotten. I remember every single one of them.

There was a time and there were places when and where fur was necessary. But except for a very few places now, we don't need fur to keep us warm or make us look stylish. It's past time to retire the fur industry, good farms and bad alike. Now, let's get pets spayed and find them all good homes. A home with a well-treated pet is a happy home.
