Miami Herald:

The nation's lawyers and law enforcement leaders gave Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor ringing endorsements Tuesday, even as Republicans tried to rally opposition.

With Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearing less than a week away, the American Bar Association announced that the 54-year-old appellate judge is ''well qualified'' to serve on the nation's highest court. The unanimous recommendation is the association's highest grade for a potential judge.

''The only way she can get derailed is if she performs poorly next week,'' acknowledged Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a Senate Judiciary Committee member. He said he was still undecided, but added, ``I honestly think I could vote for her.''

Oh sweet cheeks, I have been waiting with hesitant breath waiting for your "maybe". Now I can take a deep breath...in and out, in and out.

Lindsey Graham has probably realized that having Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court is in his best interests. In spite of the republican rhetoric, this is a judge who is moderate to moderate - right.

This should really be a MAJOR issue for any progressive - liberal. Read this article about our current Supreme Court.

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/07/06-0

Read about her ruling from just this May against GM employees:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/15/sotomayor-ruled-against-g_n_215866.html

She upheld the former President George W. Bush's Mexico City Policy:
"Mexico City Policy"1 of the United States government, whereby foreign non-governmental organizations ("NGOs") receiving U.S. government funds must agree to a provision called the "Standard Clause," which prohibits the organizations from engaging in activities that promote abortion (also referred to as the "challenged restrictions").
http://openjurist.org/304/f3d/183/center-for-reproductive-law-and-policy-v-w-bush

This doesn't begin to even look at her "corporate personhood" beliefs.

At a time when the Supreme Court is taking away citizens rights and giving corporations rights in an astonishing manner, we are putting a "moderate - right" judge on the Supreme Court. Is anyone else concerned about this?

In the end it doesn't matter. She will be confirmed, and by a pretty sizable majority. The Repubes are just continuing to be obstructionist, and they will continue to do so as much as possible.

Sotomayor should be nominated without too much trouble. There will be some in the GOP that will not let go, but there are a few that actually have common sense.

In relation to the Sotomayor nomination, I have the following links of interest:

What's funny is that i"m sure he and other GOPers who vote for her will use that vote as "evidence" that they are being bi-partisan. The real reason he is willing to vote for her is that his side has put up such a pathetic opposition to her that he might as well.

Graham said this before and then voted with his Rethug colleagues...he has several lines; this is just one of them-all his lines are tired and true to his form.

Graham is not really a "top Sotomayor critic," as the lead in to this piece suggests. Actually his shtick is that he will vote to confirm her if everyone agrees that then-Senator Obama and other Democratic senators were wrong to vote against confirming Roberts and Alito.
