LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson's glimmering casket took center stage at the Staples Center, sitting for more than two hours as celebrities memorialized the King of Pop under the watchful eyes of millions. And when the ceremony was over, it was gone.

By law, the golden casket that presumably held Jackson's body should be exactly where his death certificate says it is: back at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills cemetery, the site of a private family memorial service held before the Staples ceremony. Los Angeles County records show the cemetery as the temporary location, where it must stay until those records are officially updated.

But where Jackson's body will eventually be laid to rest remained a mystery, fed by the same level of rumor and speculation that surrounded much of his life. Will he be interred at Forest Lawn? Is Neverland Ranch still a possibility?

What if he's not buried at all, but cremated? The family isn't talking _ and may not even have decided yet.

The casket was first seen leaving the mortuary at Forest Lawn, where it got into a hearse for the 10-mile trip to the Staples Center. But before the service even started, the hearse was seen leaving the facility _ empty _ and wasn't spotted again.

But to keep in good standing with the law, the casket would have needed to return to Forest Lawn at some point, presumably after the crowds went home and the television cameras were long gone.

Robert J. Biggins, a former president of the National Funeral Directors Association, said Jackson's body is likely in his casket which he identified it as a custom-made, top-of-the-line coffin made by the Indiana-based Batesville Casket Company that is called a "Promethean." The casket is probably in a temporary holding area _ perhaps a mausoleum _ pending a final location, he said.

"This happened so quickly that it's something that has to have an awful lot of thoughtful consideration," said Biggins, who is the owner of Magoun-Biggins Funeral home in Rockland, Mass. "This is bigger than your average burial."

Conjecture about Jackson's final resting place has been as fraught as the rumors about where his memorial service would be held in the days before the Staples Center was announced. His 5-page will, signed in 2002, does not include final wishes for his body.

Forest Lawn is one likely possibility. If Jackson is buried there, he would join other celebrities such as Liberace, Gene Autry, Bette Davis and Andy Gibb. Recently deceased actor David Carradine and "Tonight Show" sidekick Ed McMahon also are buried there.

The Jackson family seems divided over whether the body should go to Neverland, which would surely turn the Santa Barbara County ranch into a West-coast Graceland. But Jackson abandoned the 2,500-acre estate after going into seclusion following his acquittal on child molestation charges in 2005, and many of the things that made it unique _ the merry-go-round, Ferris wheel and zoo _ are gone.

Billionaire Thomas Barrack, who owns Neverland in a joint venture with Jackson, has expressed an openness to the idea of having the singer's body buried at the ranch. The family would need to get permission from local land-use officials to bury Jackson on private property, then submit an application and paperwork with the state Cemetery and Funeral Bureau.

The state application would then need to be approved by the funeral board, a process that could take anywhere from seven to 30 days.

Beyond that, accessibility remains an issue at Neverland. A single two-lane highway leads to the property about 130 miles north of Los Angeles, and infrastructure changes would likely be necessary to accommodate the additional traffic.

Another possibility is cremation. State law requires that the person who has control of the cremated remains obtain written permission of the property owner or governing agency to scatter on the property.

Funeral experts said the delay in Jackson's funeral may be due to the fact that such celebrity deaths create logistical, security and legal headaches.

"One of the issues you're going to run into with any high-profile name, whether it be a former president of the United States or somebody of Michael Jackson's stature, is what does the cemetery _ if it's to be a burial _ do to establish security, to protect the remains, to protect the privacy of the family during the service, to protect remains afterward and what kind of built-in overhead comes with it," said Paul Elvig, former president of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association.

Experts said even a two-week delay between death and funeral is not unusual. The body of singer James Brown was kept in a sealed gold casket inside his South Carolina home for more than two months before being interred in 2007 at the home of one of his daughters.

"You're probably talking more about an impatient public and an impatient press wanting to know what's going to happen and that impatience needs to be understood," Elvig said. "If a body's been properly prepared by an embalmer, it can be held for a considerable period of time with minor touchups to it."

Biggins said he is even encouraged by the delay.

"I think the fact that there's this pause is a wonderful thing because it's being given thoughtful consideration," he said, "to make sure this is done right and this is done in a way that honors his legacy."

No. Forest Lawn is a very bad idea--because it is public and open--causing a constant flow of nut cases showing up and bothering all the other "ordinary" deceased. You would have to have a 24 hour security system set up to make sure no vandals did anything, etc. He should be somewhere private, with the responsibility of basically guarding his body, going to the family. Even better choice would be to cremate and scatter the remains over the ocean or wherever, so people can let go of his dead body and remember him for what they should be remembering him for--the music.

Do most people still believe that the body is the actual human being? This is so weird...

The fact that there has to be mystery of where MJ is buried is a more important story than just it is a mystery....

Our society is peppered with sheep, sheep who are driven to an incontinent frenzy in concert halls and obsessing about where the objects of their pop culture idolatry are buried.

Not to mention the really sick ones who would go and dig them up.

Aren't they waiting for his brain to be placed back into the skull? Seriously, the coroner's office still has it.

From all appearances, the concert company is determined to get all 50 dates from Jackson's corpse. Seems that cheney is now a partner in the company......

Soooooooo.......

The body will be out on tour for the next 180 days or, until it falls apart.....

Whatever happens first.

I feel the same way. I hope it's never disclosed. I know that his spirit has left his body, but if the public knew where his finally resting place was he still wouldn't get any peace. What difference does it make to the public? as long as his family knows thats all it should count. RIP, MJ

It was a shame that the LA radio stations speculated the wrong motorcade route. Fans who didn't get tickets didn't have a chance to at least see the motorcade. I waited outside Forest Lawn for 2 hours waiting for the body to be returned at least in holding and it never showed up as far as I know.

Neverland is a bad idea. It sounds nice, but the Santa Ynez Valley is quiet small town wine country. It may sound snobbish but if Michael were buried there it would ruin this country gem with the amount of traffic it would bring.

My vote is for Forest Lawn. It's beautiful, it's in LA and it can accommodate the traffic. That would give so many more people the chance to pay their respects to the King of Pop.

And the residents are totally against that. I don't blame them one bit. Who wants another Branson running thru a quiet, serene, 2 lane town?

Forest Lawn is so use to celebrity funerals that they probably planted a decoy route, along with a casket. Someone did a marvelous job too!

I think they should embalm him like they did Lenin and put him on display at Neverland.

It's very sad that a place that once meant so much to him is really not an option, but MJ said Neverland had been tainted for him, he never wanted to go there again ... so I hope his family doesn't decide to put him there....

He does deserve to be laid to rest somewhere special and unique .. because he was special and unique.

I am sure the family is trying to balance out the privacy and dignity of his final resting place, with somewhere suitable for his many fans to pay their respects in the next years ...

To be fair, if Neverland was tainted, wasn't he personally responsible for that? It was his home; he designed, paid for and lived in it, and he was the one who engaged in behavior there that was questionable enough to get a lot more attention than he wanted. I'm not crazy about all this near-messianic martyrdom that's been bandied about since his untimely death.

Respect for his wishes, absolutely; everybody deserves to have their last wishes respected whenever possible. I'm just not down with this other nonsense.

Michael himself rejected Neverland after the police detectives raped and violated it. He said it's just a house now, no longer my home. I see nothing wrong with making Neverland a kind of good will museum that showed the charity work for injured and sick children that Michael was trying to do there. But having him on display there like they tried to do with Elvis when he first died - that's grotesque. They eventually buried Elvis because that just didn't work and it was expensive to have to guard the body all the time.

A part of me is actually wondering whether they've shipped him to Georgia to be buried with his idol James Brown. How he loved that man.

Just read that Nancy Pelosi has stopped the resolution to honor MJ. How tragic that Congress doesn't have the votes to overcome the bigots in the House.

MJ brought American music to the world, gave oodles of money and support to charity and was LOVED by his kids.

Shame on Congress for stopping this resolution. It's time to vote those who vote NO out of the House. Get organized and fight racism in your own districts for 2010.

This was a frivilous resolution to begin with. It never had any support on the floor therefore it could not be brought to the floor. A resolution MUST have support to be brought to the floor. it did not.

How is choosing to focus on legislation over a pop star bigoted? They're not Entertainment Tonight; they're the House of Representatives.

It's no mystery! It's temporarily at Forest Lawn in an unmarked crypt until the family finalizes his permanent burial site. The Death Certificate eludes to this.

I'm sure the body will appear once they receive an important part back from the Coroner's office and hopefully they're trying to figure out plans to bury him at Neverland.

In any case, I want to talk about something that was reported on Larry King last night by MJ's doctor. He did have vitaliago and lupus. His doctor went into detail about the procedures he went through with MJ and why he bleached his skin. Of course, this isn't big news because it doesn't fit the narrative of MJ the mainstream media want you to hear. And here's pics too:

Jackson repeatly claimed he did not bleach his skin. At one point for a very long time he also claimed ne never had plastic surgery. I have vitigilio and it comes in spots. And lupus can kil and often does.

vitiligo BEGINS in spots. it spreads and spreads. My close friend has had it since 1983....she is at the point of considering the treatments to speed up depigmentizing the skin as emotionally the spotted look is causing her such emotional pain.
