MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Oscar G. Mayer, retired chairman of the Wisconsin-based meat processing company that bears his name, has died at the age of 95.

Mayer's wife, Geraldine, said he died of old age Monday age at Hospice Care in Fitchburg.

He was the third Oscar Mayer in the family that founded Oscar Mayer Foods, which was once the largest private employer in Madison. His grandfather, Oscar F. Mayer, died in 1955 and his father, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., died in 1965.

Mayer retired as chairman of the board in 1977 at age 62 soon after the company recorded its first $1 billion year. The company was later sold to General Foods and is now a business unit of Kraft.

Mayer's first wife, Rosalie, died in 1998. He married Geraldine Fitzpatrick in 1999.

As I have tried to say earlier, when that Weinermobile came through my town, the men all had looks of intimidation on their faces, and the girls all had cunning smirks on theirs.

Me? I'm just thankful a genie didn't grant me three wishes and that I didn't sing the jingle, "Oh I Wish I Were an Oscar Meyer Wiener" while watching a television commercial featuring "Little Oscar."

(With apologies to Mary Tyler Moore)

I HATE IT! *EVERYBODY* is misspelling "wiener". Except a few, I mean really, you have a search function somewhere on the TOP of your screen. Type in it, and figure out how to spell one of the main parts of your tribute to Oscar Mayer. I am sure he didn't get where he was carelessly misspelling everything.

Remember those little plastic weiner whistles? We had them in the 60's when we were kids. If they still make them, they could all use those!

No, but I do remember the Captain Crunch whistles that produced a perfect 2600 hz tone enabling the savvy to transfer phone calls to trunk lines and call around the world for free. Now THAT'S a whistle!

I was in Madison Wisconsin on business a couple years ago and while driving to the airport,I passed by the meat plant and saw a couple of those weinermobiles parked in the parking lot. I had not seen one for over 30 years since growing up in Chicago ( now in California). It was quite a pleasant surprise to see one. .....Also I too would like to know if he ate his own hot dogs to age 95 :-) .
