Isakson

Just for fun, the Huffington Post decided Tuesday night to crash a dinner party for Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.). It was one of many fundraisers happening every day for different politicians around town. The event's location was listed on the Sunlight Foundation's website, www.politicalpartytime.org, as a townhouse just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

The three-story red brick house, appraised at over $1.3 million, is owned by Mark Curry, according to the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. Curry is chairman of the board of the Online Lenders Alliance, a trade group for Internet payday lenders. The Sunlight Foundation calls this building the "OLA Townhouse."

This reporter arrived at the same time as John Greene of the National Association of Health Underwriters, which has a lobbying income of $250,000 so far in 2009, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. (Isakson is a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.)

Two young women from Polaris Government Relations, a lobbying firm, greeted us at the door and invited us both inside. After introductions, the Huffington Post was disinvited.

"I'd appreciate it if you'd go ahead and leave," said one of the ladies.

John Greene accompanied the Huffington Post from the doorstep to the sidewalk. He declined to say how much he paid to attend the dinner. Guests typically drop $500 or $1,000 into a politician's campaign coffers for the privilege of attending these types of events.

Greene said he was thinking about moving his car, but then he went back inside. Another man appeared from the basement door and admonished the Huffington Post to stay on the other side of the fence.

"Street, sidewalk. Private event," said a man. "Private property."

Who are you?

"That's not important."

More guests arrived. Two men, one in suspenders, the other in a dark suit, refused to identify themselves.

"The Huffington Post!" said the man in suspenders, laughing. "I wouldn't talk to those people if my life depended on it."

A man who said he was an Isakson staffer declined to provide info about the event before walking inside.

Another arriving guest said his name was Clint Robinson. He was less forthcoming after that. "Uh, what do you want to know?" he said, before noticing an acquaintance. "Hey, Bob!"

The Huffington Post asked Bob if he'd share any info about the event.

"Just that Clint Robinson's here," said Bob.

Robinson is a lobbyist for Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry. The firm's lobbying expenditures total $414,972 for 2009. The Sunlight Foundation lists as the event's hosts Dan Gans, Ward White, Bryan Cunningham, and Frank Cantrel, all of whom share an interest in telecommunications.

Isakson is a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet.

Finally, the senator arrived. The Huffington Post asked him who was attending his fundraiser.

"I haven't seen the list," he said.

What kind of people, then?

"It's people interested in America and democracy and peace and the economy," he said. "Thank you for your time."

Party time.

This is great investigation. Now take a look at the money that Rahm received from lobbyists that he decided to keep for future campaigns.

Like all things in the universe, it's a matter of degree, oh partisan of the aristocracy of the moneyed corporations:

Yes, sauce for the goose is indeed sauce for the gander. Too bad there's a bumper crop of GOP silly geese outnumbering the Dinocratic variety by orders of magnitude...

Do you know the job requirements of a corporate lobbyist?

Glibness and a willingness to sell the American people out for money.

How do we fix this? Three words....CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM!

What we really need is a Constitutional amendment banning ALL lobbying. Maybe then we could put Congress back to work for the people.

And he said all that with a straight face... I guess he didn't know that the reporters had already been inside and knew exactly who was there and what they were. Or else it's another example of a politician telling the public, "I don't care what YOU think. I don't WORK for YOU.".

Great job HuffPost. This is another reason why I am addicted to this site. You have proven yourself to be the most powerful political news medium in all of America. Keep up the good work.

It no longer qualifies as a smear if it is true.

Off With His Head! If Georgia will do it ( they're such good people; how can they not make him go and go quickly?) - but it's just a GOOD START, if they will do it.

Here's how every politician thinks (IMO):

"I'm a good guy (or gal)... and I really do want to do good things. But I can't do ANYTHING unless I get elected!"

And that's when the selling of access begins. It's long been said that 'money is the mothers milk' of politics. And, heretofore, that has come from special interest groups (this used to include large labor unions). But Obama has shown how it's possible to tap millions of small contributors to raise serious funds. So just maybe politicians might become less beholden to sleazy fatcats and start to serve the little guy again.

Of course slimeballs like Isaakson have no popular appeal so they're unable to change. Their days are numbered

Actually David Cay Johnston has a good take on how politicians massage the system for personal or corporate gain in some of his books.

Seemingly it is no longer a goal to "help the masses" that makes them run but to redistribute the tax bounty from the masses to the politician's interestes.

Why in the world do you think their days are numbered? Do you think these people will ever disappear? They have been with us since the very beginnings of our country and they will continue forever. Even if we had another revolution they would continue. They are like cockroaches, they always survive.

this was an interesting article. It would be nice if Huffpo would do this at all the DC parties they knew about, both dem and repub. I won't hold my breathe for them reporting anything the dems are doing.

Something along the lines of permitting the government to be the only authority between you and whatever specific procedure/treatment you need.

Keep up with me.

======

Keep up with you?

You have no idea what you're talking about... trying to follow your inco.h.e.rent points is like watching a drunk drive all over the road.

We dont' have government interfering in health care decisions. I don't know whose b.u.t.t you s.u.c..ked that talking point out of, but it's 100% wrong...

We understand certain people do no want to get rid of the bureaucrat from the health care profit machine, the one between them and their health care.

"People interested in America, democracy, peace" This people thinks all of us are intellectually challenged. I have no idea what is the solution to the corrupt government we have. I think we should go back, and read our History books to learn again how changes were made when the aristocracy became too corrupt.

What was so shady about it? And where is the respect of privacy? Classic smear campaign and nothing else, not worth reading.
========================================================================

Ha Ha Ha. So the shift changed but the talking points these guys are supposed to use didn't. Cracks me up. Yeah, this is all just about respecting privacy. The fact that this is an ELECTED government worker being paid a salary by MY tax dollars who is attending fundraisers with lobbyists who won't reveal their names who work for industries supposedly being regulated by this so-called senator. Sure, nothin' shady about that. Nothin' goin' on here folks. Look away, look away.

I sent good ole Johnny and e-mail asking him what you call a person who sells their time for money. Told him down here in Georgia we call 'em whores. Don't think he is smart enough to 'get it'. Maybe it would be a good idea for others to ask him about that ,too
