It is a surprise to hear from that at all. Are they at hard labor?

Was Laura coerced into the "confession" to her sister? Regardless, they knew the risk involved when they went out. It's too bad, but you must respect other country's borders and be aware of their politics. Not everyone is as "generous" as the US.

Why does she need diplomacy? She broke the law. She knows she broke the law. She knew she was breaking it when she did it. The video shows them saying that they had crossed in when they shouldn't have.

She knew the risks and she should face the consequences. Enough about her.

China does not protect Korean defectors, in fact they return them because of fear of NK retaliation, if the two girls were not in NK but close to the boarder, then they did not break the law.

With a nation as secure as NK, I find it hard to believe that anyone could sneak into that country.

Their arrest, trial and conviction is retaliation for Lisa Lings false report on NK when she entered the country with a German team of doctors to do eye surgery.

don't be so quick to pass judgement on these girls.

Wow, such a hateful comment. I hope that one day the real story emerges. Until then, I pray for these women and their families.

"Enough about her" ?????
Screw you, Swingingfrom center.

You really think a journalist deserves 12 years of hard labor in a prison camp for crossing over a border? You are a sicko.

British and Americans are making it a habit of going to these countries where certain behaviors are considered criminal and when they're caught, they expect their countries to bail them out. If you don't want to end up in jail overseas, respect their laws and cultures just as you would expect foreigners to respect yours. These two obviously went to this country to secure information which they both know could get them into trouble.

soooo your implying sex on the beach in a muslim country is a BAD idea?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:12 AM on 07/09/2009

It may not be a bad idea in this country and some other countries for some people but muslim countries take morality to the extreme and if it's not allowed there, don't do it. Respect other other countries' cultures and laws when you're abroad and you may just stay out of jail.

By the way, it's YOU'RE not YOUR in this context.

So, you're advocating the end of investigative journalism?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:13 AM on 07/09/2009

Investigate in your country and other countries that allow it. Stop practicing illegal activities in other people's countries or trying to force your laws and cultures on other countries that do not appreciate or want it.

Operatives for the CIA always have a "cover" don't they? Isn't the cover of a reporter just perfect? The CIA endangers true reporters' validity as unbiased spectators with this abuse, if so. I find it hard to imagine any press service would send two female reporters into such an area alone and unescorted. And isn't the law there on EITHER side of the border that prior approval is required? If they don't like the law they should write about it, not break it. The "poor, hapless little darlings" story seems sugary and bogus to this ex-PR flack. What were they hoping for? That extra-special eye-witness testimony? Plenty of refugees from N. Korea in China to interview...

Which wing of maximum security do you think 2 North Korean reporters would spend the next 20 years if they were caught trudging over the USA/Canadian border without visa permits? Also coincidental that they work for an organisation belonging to Al Gore (if I've read right...) Isn't he a prominent ex-government employee? Not exactly The NYT is it? And the timing? Just when N.Korea was about to launch a ballistic missile? Bit co-incidental innit? "But that's why the reporters go there", I hear some might cry. What is cutting across the border going to achieve in news about a rocket launch? So why? I don't know - ask the CIA what they were doing. Plausible Deniability is their mantra of course...

These two young ladies CIA? Bit of a tinhat statement. Our intrepid Sec. Of State Hillary is on the case. Have to agree with you on the idea of N. Korean nationals on US/Canada border. They would "disappear".

The border in that area is not clearly demarcated and is the major reason why so much people trafficking occurs there. You're right about there being plenty of NK refugees in China, and they took a stupid risk for a non-staged photo of people actually crossing the border. Many claim that they are being "marketed out" by the NK gov't itself. So maybe they were thinking "get close enough and we can get a photo of the military vehicles actually offloading forced "refugees" or soldiers receiving pay-offs? Some think that they were led intentionally across the border by a snakehead into a pre-arranged trap.

But seriously, thinking that the two would actually be spies on the NK missile launches or anything else is ridiculous. Maybe if they had some specialized sensing egpt. They showed no evasive spook craft, at all.

You sound like a PR guy...you're good at spinning tales. If they WERE NYT "reporters" it might actually be more likely they were in the Agency than the group they were working for...which is known for its exposes in the Bay Area. Trafficking of women for prostitution by the NK gov't would be just their bag.

Why isn't H0llyw00d using it's p0wer and |nfluence to spread the word about these two gir|s?
