NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent more than $36.6 million on his bid for a third term, blowing through $18 million in just two months -- a pace likely to shatter his record total in the last election.

The campaign released the billionaire's latest spending report Friday, ahead of a campaign finance filing deadline next week.

Bloomberg, who said last week that "you can't buy an election" because the public is "much too smart for that," spent $18 million from May 12 to July 11. More than $10 million in two months has gone toward advertising and literature, including television, direct mail and print ads.

The Republican-turned-independent mayor also paid his army of consultants more than $2 million in this filing period, for a total of more than $4 million on consulting this year. He has spent more than $1 million on wages for his day-to-day campaign staff, which now includes former Mayor Rudy Giuliani's cousin, who has the same name as his famous relative.

By this point in his last campaign four years ago, Bloomberg had spent far less -- $23 million. That year, his campaign launched several weeks earlier. He would go on to set a record with a total of $85 million to win re-election.

The law permits self-financed candidates to spend freely as long as they disclose their expenditures, according to the Campaign Finance Board's guidelines.

The two major Democratic candidates in the race, who depend on donations and matching funds, did not have their reports ready Friday, their campaigns said.

As of the May filing, City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. had spent $1.8 million and City Councilman Tony Avella had spent $116,000.

Thompson spokeswoman Anne Fenton said Friday that Bloomberg's millions "can't change the fact that he's ignored this city's working families."

Bloomberg, ranked by Forbes magazine as the world's 17th richest man with an estimated net worth of $16.5 billion, has repeatedly dismissed calls by opponents and others to limit his spending.

The mayor said at a campaign forum last week that he sees "no harm in going out and using that money to tell people about what we've accomplished and what we would do."

He added that there is no such thing as a fair playing field, noting that one candidate might have gone to a better school than another, or might be luckier "for the families they were born into."

Bloomberg made his own fortune after founding the financial information company that bears his name, Bloomberg LP.

Separately Friday, the city released Bloomberg's financial disclosure forms and heavily redacted tax returns.

Not much changed from the previous year, except the mayor did lose money in the stock market like most investors in 2008.

The forms do not specify amounts. Instead, letters "A'' through "G'' represent ranges, with the highest category at just $500,000 and above. For a billionaire who owns numerous homes, gives away hundreds of millions to charity each year and has a wide range of investments, the documents do not paint a detailed financial picture.

As for his stock market losses, the forms show Bloomberg lost several "G'' in 2008. That could be as little as $500,000 or hundreds of millions.

The papers also show some new income for the mayor -- he is receiving rent for horse facilities on a property he owns in Wellington, Fla. The rent was between $1,000 and $4,999.

It appears the emperor has no clothes on -- he has been found out.

$36M and counting.

While running unopposed.

Is there no other billionaire who'd like to be Emperor of this fair city?

Sheesh.

And that's not even counting the FREE self-congratulatory airtime he gets in the media.

I couldn't even take a shower with 1010WINS on this morning without hearing Mayor Mike prattling on! As if "graffitti removal" is the key to New York's future -- and the answer to the recession.

Yes, putting more serfs to work removing graffitti is the cornerstone of Lord Bloomberg's castle.

Ah, the power of incumbency.

Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhh!

Michael Bloomberg will NOT get my vote in the NYC Mayoral election. We didn't extend the Term Limit Law for Rudy and we should not do it for the egomaniac Bloomberg by him winning in November.

"$36.6 million on his bid for a third term, blowing through $18 million in just two months"

And what was the total budget for the 9/11 Commission?

Can we count on your support for this initiative, Mr. Mayor?

Bloomberg, who said last week that "you can't buy an election" because the public is "much too smart for that,"

It would be terrific if New Yorkers would prove him right on this. I would love to see it. Not only regarding his re-election, all elections. I’m not counting on it but one can hope.

Let's start a campaign to prove him right...and vote him out!

Today, he issued raises to about 7000 city managers and workers of 4% now and 4% in March of 2010, and he complains the city has little or no money. Timing is evevrything, huh?

I have nothing against Bloomberg politically or personally. He has done some good things as mayor. The City Charter limited mayors to two terms for a reason. I resent the fact that Bloomberg bullied the City Council to change that without a DIRECT VOTE OF THE PEOPLE. I resent as well the fact that Bloomberg is using his personal fortune to INTIMIDATE rivals. This is not democracy at work.

Change is good. The only thing that needs a third term in NYC is Bloombergs EGO. No thanks. Citizens will have the opportunity to vote on term limits when they vote against Bloomberg for third term.

I don't particularly like Mike Bloomberg. He masquerades his ego by trying to make believe that he's a commoner. But he likes the rich life. He likes the publicity. If he could, he'd title himself Prince of the City like a Medici. He's a little man who has become accustomed to being deferred to. I hate his commercials and all those expensive little mailings that he sends out. He made a mish mash of the term limits business and bullied everyone to change it. (Though I don't believe in term limits in and of itself) Still on the positive more admirable side he started a business as just an ordinary man of somewhat limited means and made billions. It seems to me that he believes in meritocracy and is not imbued with the idea of total patronage. A rich man doesn't have to worry about patronage. Loyalty comes about of its own course by the power of money and he can afford to get good people to work or do things for him. I can't vote for Bloomberg no matter what but then what luminary will come out of NYC politics to challenge him? Sorry to say there is no one that I know of with any name recognition or who may not be some hack politician. I have to sit out this race.

Those "expensive little mailings" seem to arrive once or twice a week, and they don't say much. Now I drop them in the recycling bin as soon as they arrive. Like you, I won't be voting for Bloomberg and wish there was a preferable candidate who is strong enough to challenge him and win. Yeah, dream on.

Remember the rumors of Bill Clinton running for mayor?

“Mayor Mike’s” multi-million dollar media blitz is class-warfare in disguise . . . .
Bloomberg is a hard-core, dyed-in-the-wool, right-wing, upper-crust, petty-tyrant. . . . in Bloomberg’s NYC. . . . as (publicly funded) stadiums, and art exhibits OPEN. . . . . (publicly funded) Hospitals, and Libraries CLOSE.

Well here is the way I see it. To date he has spent
$36,000,000 for 4 x 365 days in office.

$36,000,000 divided by 4x365 days= $24,657 for each day in office

As the old saying goes: "Rich or Poor it's good to have money!"

Bloomberg's $36M campaign war chest (just wait....this is just a tip of the Bloomberg) roughly translates into $5.00 for every person living in NYC. Had our Mayor handed out $5.00 bills to every New Yorker, this certainly would have had more positive impact on NY economy than his "brave and progressive stewardship" (sic!).

What happened to NYC during Bloomberg's reign was a rapid and sustained transition from imperfect democracy to perfect realestateocracy. Every square inch of NYC is now owned by some real estate oligarch, and City Council is crammed with cronies and yes-men whose sole purpose is to publicly praise the emperor, sing hosannahs and genuflect profusely.

While this "brave leadership" was going on, city services were cut, payrolls shrank by thousands, hundreds of tax-paying corporation fled the City and transit fares were hiked because MTA went belly-up. Property taxes went through the roof and into the stratosphere, while office vacancy rate now stands at 20% in some parts of the city. Meanwhile, historic sections of the city were demolished to make way for ugly "luxury rental" compounds, which now sit empty and virtually abandoned because of the real-estate bust.

I hated Giulliani, always thought of him as a pocket Savonarola, but, in hindsight, he was marginally better steward of the city than Bloomberg. Plus, unlike the current mayor, who is about as fun to watch as a poorly-lubricated guillotine, Giulliani was a great entertainer.

He could spend less than a third of that, his opponent is so weak and is making an effort to stay unknown.

If he were such a great mayor in his first two terms, why does he need to spend all of that money?

Shouldn't what he has done speak for itself?
