It unimaginable to me how someone could walk away from their family like that and not look back. I know it happens all the time but as a mother I just cannot understand it (and I know many mothers do this as well).
My great-grandfather bailed out on his wife and two daughters, leaving them destitute. No one knows where he went or what happened to him. My great-grandmother worked as a seamstress, barely making ends meet. My grandmother went on to become a nurse and married a doctor, but being penniless and fatherless as a child affected her deeply the rest of her long (100-year) life.
I can imagine. Being abandoned is a huge weight to carry.
