I Like ItI Don’t Like It

One project aims to make London a more cheery place through the use of song. A group has scattered 30 pianos throughout the city in order to encourage impromptu singalongs. Despite the mountain of paperwork it required to get the project up and running, the group succeeded and more music has begun to fill the air of the city.

Wonderful idea. Do musicians still play in the Paris Metro Stations? Are there still street corner musicians and quartets in the cities of Germany? Why is there so little of that here in the States?

I'm gonna hire an army of Emos to play their own impromptu songs.

... that'll cheer up dreary London.

No. Dreary.

Not stuck-up and pretentious.

Just when I'm feeling down about the state of the species, along comes a story that reminds me how great humans can be.

The idea-meister here deserves a substantial prize. Maybe a Nobel.

As an expat living in London I gotta say that this has been a real treat to see. There is one near the Millennium foot bridge, and another in the Portabelo Road market. Just yesterday we passed by one in a small green area near Chelsea and watched a young blind boy of maybe 14 play on the piano for a good 15 minutes as a crowd sat in rapt attention. At another one I listened as an old man played for a group of nearly 30 school kids on their way to the Tate modern. Great project, except for the crappy London rain that has been coming through all weekend. Cheers.

Yeah, right, they'd all get stolen in the first five minutes.

Absolutely brilliant idea! Too bad it wouldn't fly in this country (USA). Could you just imagine the uproar from the clods on the far right bawling about socialism?

Corporatist fascist clods.

Actually they wouldn't mind as long as people get charged to play and sing.

The capacity of music to stir the soul is amazing.
These need to be in every downtown, especially Detroit.

But in Detroit you would also need a guard to prevent someone from vandalizing the pianos or just carting them away to the nearest pawn shop.

Who came up with this ridiculous idea? That communist Pete Seeger? He was NEVER happy unless the entire audience was singing along.

/satire ;) I love Pete.

I love this idea! I used to fool around on the piano but I haven't had access to one for a long time. Wish we had some in Minneapolis!

Buy a keyboard. Plenty of cheap ones on craigslist.

I like to hold the sustain pedal and only play the black keys. Does an electric keyboard sound the same as a Steinway? Thanks for the idea!

Minneapolis is probably the city that would be most likely to try this.
I would not be surprised if they do...
