The problem with MLS is salary caps for teams. I think it must be an attempt to make sure that at least some U.S. college players are guaranteed a place on one of these teams. Beckham is a great player, but he needs a team of at least good players to succeed. With the salary cap, galaxy could not hire other good players. As long as MLS keeps up this US college mentality in coaching and playing style and maintains team salary caps, then the league will never be comparable to those in other countries.

I think the MLS should partner with FIFA by loaning players as much as possible even at the expense of club victories. You're right the college mentality of running out long grosses is pee wee at best. The game is about control, patience and being physical .
The American game is trying to cater to the Latin American fans because they are the only ones going to the games. Which is nothing but a bunch of 5' 6" "little people" unable to trap and pass that fall when blown on.
We need MEN to play in the MLS. Just like the Premiere league and Serie A. Grown men that impose their will and strength but have the touch to win a first move.

Many of the best players in the world are from South America. The current best players in the world are from South America; they are certainly not British. Most of the best players in the premiere league are imported. How tall is Messi? I think you are very confused.

Maybe Donovan should have held his tongue. But he's probably right. I appreciate Beckham coming to the US and trying to push MLS forward, but Donovan is the heart of American soccer... and I don't think anyone questions his loyalties.

Donovan is definitely not the heart of American Soccer. The only Goals he gets are during a shootout. He is bitter and jealous that Beckham did well with AC Milan. Donovan tried to play in Germany but he could not hack it. He was terrible. He is also accusing Beckham of doing the same thing that he tried to do, which is make his move to Europe permanent. If Donovan is so good, why can't LA Galaxy make it to the MLS playoffs?

ummm did you watch the CONCAF cup?...he played the entire field always around the ball and scoring as well.
Point taken about his European tries...but be real and recognize that Donovan has earned his American Soccer stripes. He probably shouldn't have said what he did. BUT if anybody knows anything about world Football they know that Bekham is all hype with very little affect on the game. And the fact that he and his vacuous wife lick each other like self indulgent media who*es makes real "ballers" nauseous.
I won't defend Donovan...BUT I damn sure won't defend the "opportunist" trying to cash in on American shiny chasing culture. Surprisingly America's not biting......

On the club side, David Beckham has captained Manchester United and Real Madrid arguably the two largest and most successful clubs in world futbol. United manager Alex Ferguson, Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón and England manager Fabio Capello have all praised Beckham for maintaining his professionalism and commitment to the the teams he has played on. He has won 7 league titles, 2 FA cups and a champions league title while becoming the most capped player in the storied history of English football.

Yes Beckham spends a fair amount of time maintaining his image, but the results on the pitch speak for themselves. He is a world-class soccer player, even at 34 years of age. I can't recall him being accused of not putting in the effort that is expected by his teammates.

erm...no. Beckham was never captain of Real Madrid. That would be Raul. And yes, Beckham's professionalism has been called into question before - including by his own manager at ManUtd, Sir Alex Ferguson which is why he sold him to Real Madrid in the first place - he said Beckham was too focused on becoming a celebrity to the detriment of his game. Ramon Calderon is no longer the president of Real Madrid and he in fact criticized Beckham quite controversially when he said Beckham was more interested in going to Hollywood to become a half baked actor. As for his record number of caps - that is not without controversy - he is putting in minutes as a replacement - he is not playing full games the way his predecessors did to earn their caps so many people feel this "record" is tainted. You really have an overinflated opinion of him and I think your recall is limited to Beckham's Hollywood press releases. He is not that good. Diego Maradona called him a great shirt salesman and not a great player - said he never even came close to being considered one of the greats.

First Donovan criticized Beckham publicly without talking with him first, and then Beckham tore Donovan a new one because it's "unprofessional to speak out about a team-mate, especially in the press and not to your face."

And how do we know Beckham was critical of Donovan's comments about him? Because Beckham criticized Donovan in the press without having spoken to Donovan first.

Beckham, it's time to man-up, you $250,000,000 cry-baby.

Beckham is one of the greatest scams in sports! This is why the MLS will never make it here. Give a guy a zillion dollar contract to do NOTHING! He never scored a goal. He is a joke. I am happy he and his alien-wife are going back to europe.

Beckham Planning To Confront Teammate Who Called Him "Unprofessional"

Why is this news? Might as well run a story with the headline:

Beckham has given Galaxy his best, to the extent he has been around & not on loan at Milan. The problem is that his best is not as good as the Galaxy administration - and it seems many here- thought.

There is no need to take it on David; he has ALWAYS given his best, & anybody accusing him of unprofessionalism has not observed his career.

the point is, not only has Beckham's best been far less than usually thought, he has been in decline for a while, which is really why Madrid didn't see any urgency in renewing his contract until it expired & why Milan had the guts to offer Galaxy peanuts for his services.

He is....don't get me wrong he deserves to get on the pitch. But is NO WHERE near worth the money he is getting from the Galaxy. Definitely not a football star.....
