LOS ANGELES — In his final days, Michael Jackson was robust and active. Or dangerously thin and frail. Begging for access to powerful prescription drugs. Or showing no signs of ever having used them.

It depends on who's talking.

A dizzying collection of puzzle pieces about Jackson's health and habits has come to light since his death on June 25. With as much as a month before a toxicology report determines the cause, more are sure to emerge.

Each is likely to fuel further speculation. None is sure to produce a satisfying conclusion.

Some who knew him even seem to contradict themselves.

Here's what's known so far:

___

_ During his final rehearsal at the Staples Center, Jackson was captured on video doing his signature moonwalk and dance spins. Randy Phillips, CEO of concert promoter AEG Live, told CNN he was "a healthy, vibrant human being."

Story continues below

_ Phillips later told ABC concert organizers feared that Jackson was losing weight and showing signs of wear and tear. He said he hired a staffer whose purpose was to remind Jackson to eat.

_ Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's dermatologist, who said he last saw Jackson less than a week before he died, told CNN's Larry King that the singer was in "very good physical condition," in "a very good mood," and "was very happy."

_ Klein also told CNN that he had given Jackson the painkiller Demerol but warned him about using the powerful sedative Diprivan. He also confirmed that Jackson was a former drug addict who went to rehab in England.

_ "The Incredible Hulk" star Lou Ferrigno, who was helping Jackson prepare for a planned series of London concerts, told The Associated Press that he never saw Jackson take drugs, act aloof or speedy, and the singer wasn't frail when he last saw him at the end of May. "I've never seen him look better," he said.

_ Two of Jackson's former confidants, medium Uri Geller and ex-bodyguard Matt Fiddes, said they tried in vain to keep the pop superstar from abusing prescription drugs. Geller said he suffered a terrible falling-out with Jackson over the issue, but not before he had to "shout at Michael, to scream at Michael" in an effort to confiscate the singer's stocks of medication during his travels in England.

_ The drug Diprivan, an anesthetic widely used in operating rooms to induce unconsciousness, was found in Jackson's residence, a law enforcement official told the AP. Also known as Propofol, the drug is given intravenously and is very unusual to have in a private home.

_ Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse, told the AP she repeatedly rejected his demands for Diprivan. But a frantic phone call she received from Jackson four days before his death made her fear that he somehow obtained Diprivan or another drug to induce sleep.

_ Akon, the Senegalese R&B singer and producer with whom Jackson recently recorded songs, told Billboard.com that "Michael is just one of the healthiest people that I know. He was pressuring me to stay healthy, like, 'Akon, eat right. What are you doing out there on the road? Are you eating? Are you exercising? Are you drinking a lot of water?'"

_ Klein said Jackson had been suffering from lupus _ a chronic disease where the immune system attacks the body's own tissue _ and a skin disorder known as vitiligo.

_ Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered CPR on Jackson's bed, rather than a hard surface, "with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support" because the singer was so frail, the doctor's attorney, Edward Chernoff, said.

_ Chernoff also told the AP that Murray never gave or prescribed Jackson the painkillers Demerol or OxyContin, and said the doctor didn't give the pop star any drugs that contributed to his death.

_ Among other things, Murray's lawyers have acknowledged it took up to 30 minutes for paramedics to be summoned to Jackson's home after he was found unresponsive.

_ Jackson's family requested a private autopsy in part because of questions about Murray's role, the Rev. Jesse Jackson has said.

_ Kevin Mazur, a photographer documenting the Staples Center rehearsals for a tour book, told the AP that Jackson looked in perfect health. "He was very upbeat, very happy, having a good time with the dancers," Mazur said.

_ Spiritual teacher Dr. Deepak Chopra told the AP he had been concerned since 2005 that Jackson was abusing painkillers and spoke to the pop star about suspected drug use as recently as six months ago. Chopra said Jackson, a longtime friend, personally asked him for painkillers in 2005; Chopra said he refused.

_ Los Angeles police chief William Bratton said detectives are looking at his prescription drug history and trying to talk with his numerous former doctors. He also says police are waiting for the coroner's report before ruling out any possibilities in their "comprehensive and far-reaching" probe, which includes the Drug Enforcement Administration and the state attorney general's office.

Oh... and look what I uncovered! For those who said his rehersal at Staples Center meant he was washed up or something rather. Like I, and numerous people have said before, you don't give it your all in rehersal. Here's a long rehersal clip on YouTube MJ practicing Beat It and it's the same MJ:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RiAEHIClWI&feature=related

He was so ready for these concerts - it's such a shame!

Awesome clip, but not from recent rehearsals...it was rehearsal for the dangerous tour 1992-3.

18 years ago. He was about 32. So beautiful.

Was he healthy? Does he look healthy?

When are we going to let this go? It is not like we didn't know about his troubles. The fact is that the combination of stress and prescription drugs will wear down the healthiest of us all. I just hope that his affairs are amicably settled for his children's sake.

Wasn't the MJ pheonomenon "unhealthy" in it's essence? Not just for him, but for the faithful, and the hangers-on, and the spokes-models who eulogized his passing? I understand his impact culturally, but he was hardly unique. You want distraught circus effects for your funeral....go back to Rudy Valentino. You want OTC over-medication (prescribed by an MD on retainer) as a means of transition to death...try Elvis Presley. You want playgrounds in the Hollywood environs...try Douglas Fairbanks. You want unresolved Father/Son issues...see Marvin Gaye. You want inability to tackle maturing...look to J M Barrie. You want remarkable song and dance skills...try Jackie Wilson (who died a far more tragic death). You want...you want...

I'm hoping somewhere in his will there is cryogenics, to bring him bqack to life. I think we can cure him if his body is frozen until we find out the cure for why he died. I think he may be a good test study. i heard he had this option in his will.

Michael Jackson was not healthy enough to perform 50 concerts...which probably explains why the AEG promoters were on CNN af few days after his death trying to convince everyone otherwise. Let's face it, AEG doctored up a rehearsal clip of Michael Jackson with part of it in slow motion to fool everyone. The clip looked weak...and probably would have looked even worse had they not shown some of it in slow motion.

Also, one of the reps for AEG said on CNN that after one of the rehearsals, he walked Michael to his car and Michael hugged him and said "thank you...i know i can do this." BULLCRAP!

When Michael Jackson was about 12 years old there were rumours that his father was having him treated so that he wouldn't go through puberty and lose his money-making voice.

Nohting about this has been mentioned since then, but I'm curious about what people think. Not only did he appear feminine (even taking his surgeries into account) but his body appeared un-matured and his voice remained very light. Not the singing voice, since anyone can sing falsetto with sufficient practice, but his speaking voice remained a child's voice, not the same kind of voice as the rest of the family had. Jermaine has talked about Joe taking Michael alone into a room with men in it, and that Michael would be sick for days or weeks afterwards each time that happened, and that he'd always wanted to know what had happened to Michael at those times.

If he had been given hormones to prevent testosterone from taking its normal course, that would leave him with a very gentle personality (even in women testosterone plays a part in aggression) and completely asexual - not attracted to anyone sexually, male, female, adult, or child.

It would also account for his completely hairless, narrow chest, and no sign whatever at any time of his life of any kind of beard shadow, stubble, or moustache.

It would also explain why the children had to come from artificial insemination.

What do you think?

First off all, all the Jacksons speak in a soft voice. His singing voice matured over the years - in fact it got better. To say he had the same singing voice from age 12 to now is ridiculous.

The reason why he was hairless is because of his vitiligo and lupus diseases. His narrow chest, he was a dancer and there are TONS of photos of him with a 5 o'clock shadow - tons of photos.

Whadda I think? I think that's bunch of crap...no offense to you, bub!

That soft talk is a result of the Motown Etiquettes Department. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc have/had that same soft speech, b/c they wanted their artist to have a polish speaking voice. But polish can't make-up for a strong vocabulary, formulation of thoughts, and complete sentences. I think MJ was talk that way. Janet will also transition from soft, whisper voice to plain speaking voice.

Also, MJ was known both in private and on a vew occassions in front of the camera to speak in his natural, deeper voice.

Google "Pictures of Jackson 5 1972 to 1979". And you'll see a very normal looking teenage MJ.

As for Joe Jackson, he was a disciplinary, steel worker, aspiring artist, and a very basic man's man. All that stuff you wrote above is/was beyond him, even today!

"It would also explain why the children had to come from artificial insemination."

Lisa Marie Presly said that MJ wanted her to have his child, but she refused b/c he wasn't mature enough to be a parent. Too bad she flet that way, that's what he needed to become more mature. Anyway, the point is he was willing to use his genes with her.

Another explanation:
Until MJ death, I couldn't understand why he didn't use his own sperms, MJ was FINE b4 the nose job, but if Vitilgo cause him that much grief, then he probabley didn't want to pass on the genes.

Michael had to shave if he didn't want facial hair. The infamous pic of him with the bandaid on his nose shows stubble.

He sported facial hair at one point late in his career and also chest hair. You can see it in close-up stills from the Brazilian version of the "They Don't Care About Us" video.

Leonard Rowe, friend and concert financial advisor of MJ and the Jackson Family, went on national TVE saying he was not fit at 110 to 115 lbs at 5'11' and the concert promoters were pushing him.

It really is in the eye of the beholder... this was less than a year ago. In fact, the magazine is on stands right now. He looked healthy to me:

And it appears this Leonard Rowe was let go May 20th, according to a document from ABC News... the interview he did with CNN said he was at a business meeting with MJ just three weeks ago. So, I'm not sure this Rowe guy is on the up and up.

He's on the up and up...he's a long time friend of the entire Jacksons. I wish you could see the actual video of the interview with Leonard Rowe. He spoke with the conviction of a dear and loving friend. They show it tonight on PrimeTime. If you can please take a look.

MJ death reminds me of Karen Carpenter's death...she collapsed in the closet of her bedroom from a "massive heart attack" due to a long battle with anorexia and diet pills.

It really sounds like everyone saying "Oh no, he was PERFECTLY HEALTHY! Happy and fit! Working hard" has a very personal interest in MJ being healthy. Of course his doctor and his concert promoter are going to say that. His family has obviously been in denial of his drug use and poor health for years and that is not any different now. Just looking at him, he did not look 'healthy' by any definition.

AEG can spin this all they want, but there is no way they can convince me that Michael Jackson was the healthy vibrant Michael of old. He was 50 years old. Michael Jordan is like 47 and a helluva athlete who did not abuse himself as Jackson did and he'd never compare himself to the Michael Jordan of old for even 24 minutes per game. Jackson supposedly had Lupus which is nothing to sneeze at. He has a history of drug abuse which, even if currently clean, takes its toll, as well as a history of significant injury. His weight would be a concern going into the physical demands that his performance X50 would call for. He may have been in relatively good health considering....but to paint him as robust is disingenuous. I very much doubt that he would have been able to fulfill his 50 performance contract even if his spirit was willing, the body will betray.

If Michael Jackson was" healthy", he would not have needed a doctor at his home overnight. I am a health care professional, and I see unbelievable situations of people with disease and disability staying in their own homes with a nurse or PCA, but never a doctor. I know he was a celebrity, but still, why a doctor ?? It screams foul play.

On the lighter side, I found a Belgian website ( eternalmoonwalk.com ), that edits together hundreds of submitted home videos of people ( and pets, and dolls, and bikes, etc.....) doing the moonwalk in an endless stream. It's not quite "eternal" yet, but we quit watching after 10 minutes. Some really fun videos. Enjoy !
