I Like ItI Don’t Like It

In one of the most disturbing videos to have emerged from the drug war, a dashboard camera has caught police officers in Louisiana using force on a man who was trying to put a small bag of white powder in his mouth. The man died a short time later at the scene.

A person who answered the phone at the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that the dash-cam video is authentic. A spokesman, though, wasn't immediately available.

The man was apparently attempting to avoid arrest by swallowing the drugs he had on him.

In the video, an officer can be heard repeatedly shouting "spit it out," while he is shown trying to force the man's jaw open. An officer later is heard describing what they found in his mouth as a "plastic bag with white powder."

"Is he breathing?" one officer can be heard asking, after several minutes of attempting to force open his mouth.

"I don't know," says another.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office later said that the officers actions were warranted. "He was appropriate in his actions. He followed departmental protocol in trying to arrest a subject who tried to resist," Chief Deputy Jason Ard told local reporters. [See below for updates.]

Watch the video to see what passes for appropriate:

UPDATE: The Huffington Post spoke with Chief Deputy Ard and asked him about the incident.

"It's not a broken neck," he said. "It was a fractured hyoid bone, which is a small bone in your throat. That's a big difference if you think about it."

Ard said the coroner is expected to say that the cause of death was "basically...his heart condition with the methamphetamine that was found in his system, also ... If your hyloid bone is fractured that doesn't kill you."

HuffPost: "Any regret that this ended in a death?"

"Well, there's no regret. To say there's a regret -- I mean, we regret that someone lost their life, yeah, but the officer was reasonable in his actions. He was trying to arrest someone who didn't want to be arrested. And he was resisting arrest. Are we in a country now where from now on when people don't want to go to jail we just allow them to walk away?"

HuffPost: "It seemed more to me that he was resisting handing over the little baggie of powder. It seemed he was willing to get arrested; he just didn't want to open his mouth."

Ard: "Why would he not want to hand over the powder or substance?"

HuffPost: "Probably didn't want to get arrested, I guess."

Ard: "Thank you. I mean, it all runs together. Everybody's entitled to their own perception, don't get me wrong. You're looking at the video and you're entitled to your own perception. This is not a Rodney King beating, so to speak. This guy -- this deputy did not take his Mag Light out, which was in his back pocket. He tried to use chemical spray. He tried to do everything he could to restrain someone who physically resisted him and continued to disobey his verbal campaigns and you can hear him on it very plainly on the video telling this guy what to do, all he had to do -- lay on your belly and stick your hands flat in front of you and it's done. I didn't see anything that he did -- and we watched this over and over -- and at the end, you see at the end of the video they immediately go into CPR mode as soon as they realize he's having trouble."

HuffPost: "Does this make you reflect at all on the drug war itself, the fact that this guy died over a teaspoon of some drug?"

Ard: "Yeah, it just shows you how desperate some people can be for something, like what we believe to be a bag of methamphetamine. We know that we have a drug problem throughout the world, not only with methamphetamines or cocaine or a prescription medication -- we have it and we do everything we can to deal with it. And these officers who walk the beat on a daily basis do everything they can to keep the streets safer. So short of ignoring the fact the guy was driving under the influence and could go down the road and kill somebody, short of the fact that this guy could've just been let go because he just didn't want to go to jail and didn't want you to get what he had in his hand and we just said 'Okay, you can go.' I mean, where do you draw the line at? ... This was one of those deals where you can see it for yourself. We released it. It's from the start to the finish. The deputy did everything he could reasonably in a reasonable fashion to try to take him to jail.

"He wasn't trying to choke him, he was trying to stop him from swallowing evidence which could potentially kill him."

If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny. - Thomas Jefferson

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.- The 4th Amendment

This Amendment has all but been fully repealed in the name of the drug war.

There is 2 minutes of this video missing!!!!!

the time goes from 4:19.23 to 4:21.21...... but in the conversation you had with the representative from the Police force said, "We released it. It's from the start to the finish." What happened in the two minutes that was cut out of the video. Sure looks like they are trying to hide something!!!!!

The penalty for a teaspoon of meth is not DEATH, period. The penalty for not cooperating with a police officer if not DEATH, period. How can people say this is okay?

who's fault is it this man died, the police or his own?

the cop was doing his job as instructed, the suspect was attempting to avoid penalty for violating the law. what are you missing?

It's the fault of We the People for allowing this brutal drug war to continue.

The part were the constitution allows cops to summarily execute Americans for victimless crimes.....This officer murdered this man, it happens everyday.....and you wonder why people hate the police......they have earned it............You can bet his friends and family will never respect a police officer again.......attitudes like yours "he was following orders" is what the S.S. was doing under Hitler......following orders is no defense for criminal acts......

Mr. Tyler-Durden I believe you are confusing arbitrary information for moral and right behaviour. They KILLED a man or at the very least their procedure allowed actions that were, at least, aggresive enough that I would venture a guess that one out of 15 people would have died in the same circumstance with or with-out the drug aspect. Looking through the prism of the victim being your brother, sister or one of your children it seems that the situation could have been handled in many less dangerous ways for the suspect or the officer. Looks like cop that clearly is in the wrong job. I hope that he is feeling "right" enough in what happened so that he doesn't suffer like the wife, family and other people that realize that it didn't have to be this way.

In a suspected case of murder, a fractured hyoid strongly indicates throttling or strangulation.

people would rather die than go to jail on a drug charge...

Due to its position, the hyoid bone is not susceptible to easy fracture. In a suspected case of murder, a fractured hyoid strongly indicates throttling or strangulation. - 'hyoid bone' Wikipedia

yeah, no kidding, obviously they were trying to keep him from swallowing the stuff. but in this situation, he does not have a right to swallow what the officer is demanding from him. he should have submitted.

Some posters here seem to be missing the big picture. If drugs were legal, this guy wouldn't have been arrested for anything more than a DUI, if that even. (Does amphetamine impair driving? Not sure.) He wouldn't be trying to swallow his drugs to escape a probable prison sentence.

Moreover, he'd have been using a safer, unadulterated amphetamine instead. With adequate education, he could also have known how not to OD.

Regardless of whether the officers were justified, the drug war and its Puritan purveyors killed this man out of a misplaced desire to protect society's "morals" (and to otherwise be buzzkills).

The police are meant "to protect and to serve" - this man put up no struggle, he should have been hadcuffed and then him and his vehicle searched. Strangling the man, pulling his jaws open, punching him in the face whilst all the time sat on his back is not going to help the suspcect in any way and is just plain assault by the Officer.

That some people here are justifying the assualt and murder of a suspect just so a cop can get a drugs arrest is insane, lets just hope if your kids or family ever get caught with anything or are under age drinking (or drunk) the Police are not as zealous in their need for a arrest that they treat your kids and family the same.

I saw a man( 250 #), Clearly respectful when approaching the officer, realize that he had something in his wallet and try to get rid of the evidence. Then I saw ,said man, flailing , struggling and dying in an attempt to reach for his throat to breathe. I DIDN'T see him reach for the officer, his gun, his baton or try to strike him. The video I watched was of a man who was killed. Your perspective is very easy to predict. I know you well, not good.

Drugs need to be stopped at the border before they get into the United States. Three kids I grew up with died from drugs before they turned 18. The damage they did to their families and community was huge. I have seen kids swallow drugs to hide it from teachers in middle school( the kids found capsules on the floor) . It would be cheaper to keep it out of the country before the damage.

Poverty and mental abuse killed those kids... not having proper guidance and love killed those kids... having parents that show little or no emotion killed those kids... it's not a substance that kills people it's lack of character and resilience to the worlds many ills, that kills kids. You can't just raise a child anyway you want and think it's the drugs that kill them! I've had friends who have died from overdoses too, and guess what, every one of them came from a particular type of family that, in one way or another, didn't prepare their children for the world they lived in. It's not drugs that kill people it's bad parenting and a certain personality type... so many studies have shown that anyone who is brought up in a family where the parents model certain behavior, from addictive personality traits to non emotive signaling, will teach their children to turn to substances for emotional expression... you know, the dad who says nothing or is unemotional until he has a beer or the mother that eats too much because she doesn't know how to express herself emotionally... that's what teaches children to go to drugs for emotional experiences... like I said, it's not the drugs that kill, it's the parenting!

As others haven mentioned, here is some disturbing information on fracture of the hyoid bone in adults:

"Due to its position, the hyoid bone is not susceptible to easy fracture. In a suspected case of murder, a fractured hyoid strongly indicates throttling or strangulation. "
