Whether you grow your own berries, buy them at your local farmers market, or visit berry farms to get your fix, take the next green step and make your own homemade jam.

Ecosalon's Caitlin Fitzsimmons details making homemade jam.

The simplest way to preserve berries is to freeze them. The trick is to lay the berries out on a baking tray and freeze them individually before bagging them up -- otherwise, the berries will stick together. Or you can go for the time-honoured route and try your hand at jam-making. [...] It was also quite fast - it took longer to pick the berries than to make the jam. At the simplest level, it is simply cooking up fruit and sugar.

Canning is mostly a lost art. When I was a kid, the old folks did a lot of canning - not because they had to, but because they wanted to.

No offense, but why do you need a story about making jam? Fruit, sugar, boil, put in mason jar, sterilize. Done.

Just put up 14 half pound jars of strawberry/rhubarb jam. I also found someone pulling oranges and grapefruit off the shelf at the supermarket because the fruit looked a little sad. I asked if the market would sell it to me at a discount and, lo and behold, I now have 13 half pound jars of orange marmalade and 8 half pound jars of grapefruit marmalade.

I didn't know I had so many friends when I spread the news.
