Chelsea Green:

This week a group of organic farmers is calling for a nationwide boycott of all H.P. Hood branded products because of what they're calling "unfair business practices." This includes organic companies--Hood products include some names you might not expect. Looks like even organic large companies don't transcend all "evils" of business.

Organic Valley is not part of this. Horizon on the other hand sold out or might as well have, to Walmart and its lowball price demands some time back.
We purchase only local or Organic Valley dairy products and stopped buying Horizon or Stonyfield (even tho' their whole milk french vanilla yogurt is to die for) ...in more ways than one, I guess.

Wow, what an ineptly written, knee-jerk-reaction article that contains misinformation (stating that Organic Valley is part of this fiasco) and lack of information (as to exactly WHY the farmers' contracts are not being renewed).

I found another article addressing this issue, hope its more informative:

What is the issue? Who is the bad guy? Why no contract? Why a boycott? Did Sarah Palin write that article?

Hi Everyone,

CORRECTION: HP Hood does NOT produce Organic Valley products! Organic Valley is an independent, farmer-owned cooperative of more than 1,300 family farmers nationwide. (www.organicvalley.coop). Chelsea Green incorrectly included us in their article, and we're notifying them of their mistake.

Thanks,
Jamie

That's what I'm thinking why didn't these farmers organize as a cooperative instead of selling out to big corporate ag. Kinda one part of ag where corporates f**kup BIG TIME!

Has anyone explained what the alleged unfair business practice was? I went to the link and didn't see this explained. Are we supposed to assume the 'bad guys' have done something morally wrong just because they are being boycotted?

After watching the documentaries "Food, Inc" and "Earthlings", I've been terrified into vegetarianism... At least for a few days, anyway.

Support your local farmers!

This is where milk becomes incredibly frustrating in states where you can't buy from local producers. I don't mind (personally) pasteurized milk, a LOT of kids died from unpasteurized milk before pasteurization was discovered (though I prefer long/slow pasteurization over the high temp pasteurization that seems to be so common now)... But so many states have so many restrictive rules about selling milk that consumers either buy WHOLLY industrialized milk, or they have to "cross a picket line" so to speak.

it's incredibly tough to know how to handle it.

I have no problems supporting this boycott. This is just plain wrong.
