"Walter Kronkite" On Twitter: Legendary Anchor's Name Misspelled By The Masses

First Posted: 08/17/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:40 PM ET

Even though the news legend Walter Cronkite appeared in living rooms across America for decades, it appears the Twitter generation has trouble spelling his name. At 10pm EST, one of the trending topics was "Walter Kronkite."

One should be assuaged by the fact that RIP Walter Cronkite was the top trending topic at that time... so twitter users aren't all misspellers.
We've included a screen grab and the offending live Twitter feed.

Maybe the misspelling tweeter is from Sweden. According to an article I read, the term for a news anchor there is "kronkiter" - how's that for an homage?

I guess that's why it's called TWITtering..for Witless Tittering? Well, this is no surprise, inasmuch as this bunch is among those who don't seem to understand the difference between "fewer" and "less"? If anyone, other than those being held hostage in a bank hold-up, can justify how this time-wasting, emotionally-retarded, delayed-adolescent, thoroughly self-indulgent fixation could possibly be considered of any value, I'd love to hear about it! Well..not really. Please..don't!

Walter Cronkite..that's with a "C"..was the consummate (also with a "C") journalist..he wrote and spoke in terms of "how, what, why, where and when"..the cardinal rule of investigative and all other leigitimate reportiing..the dearth of which is nowdays so prevalent. In other words, you told the truth, the whole truth and (especially) nothing but the truth! What we get today is 99% editorializing..intentionally slanted, manipulative propaganda..which is fine if it is identified as "opinion"..but rarely is so labeled.

There is no chance for the ignorant to be educated, for in their brainwashed stupor, they continue to gravitate toward their Inquirer-esque pundits..shunning anything that isn't thereby blessed by them, as "bias". Such mental laziness used to be confined to the readers of tabloid rags..back in the days when folks read newspapers and the network news actually counted for something..before it was all just another advertisement for Ditzyland or some other place or product, designed soley to separate you from your money.

That's because the masses, i.e., average Americans, are inexcusably stupid.

But this is a problem....I don't message on Youtube anymore..it's like talking to dumb and dumber.
Most of these people can't even spell easy words and use there for their! And sitting in front of a computer...they are too lazy to use a spelling correction program to see if they've miss-typed or miss-spelled a word.
Our schools supposedly use tests to find out if their teaching is effective....not working.
It's an easy guess that Civics Class and History Class is no different. These are Fox Fantasy News fans in the making!

agreed and thank you.

Why do you assume schools are at fault here? Is every misspelling, every fact gap, every absence of logic and reason the result of teacher after teacher not doing their jobs? You don't think English teachers hammer away at 'their' and 'there'? Desire to learn and personal responsibility on the part of the learners is very much a part of the equation. Unfortunately, we live in a nation that really doesn't respect education, one in which people are happy to brag they have read very few or no books. On the national scene the educated are regarded as elitist. We do very little in this country to show that we value and respect education. Yes, I agree it is too bad people apparently cannot spell Cronkite, but is that the fault of the English teacher who didn't have a spelling list of the last names of famous newscasters? Or is it the fault of the Civics and History teachers whose lessons never included Cronkite? I am no fan of Faux News, but your criticisms of education based upon the misspelling of man's last name could have come from Fox itself.

that should be "converstations regarding proper English HAVE" come up.

That's what happens when I'm interrupted.

The fault lies with the pary who writes something without being sure of how it's spelled. Folks are blaming their teachers for not having "lists"? Really. There is no excuse in this day and age for not doing a search online for the correct spelling of a name, along with a sufficient amount of information on that person to speak with some small authority. The magic word is "responsibillity".

How much does Twitter pay everyone to get these stories online? Who cares how his name was tweeted?

09:24 AM on 07/18/2009

Shouldn't that be"but not TOO young??" If you're going to rip on someone for a spelling error, it might be a good idea to make sure you're spelling everything correctly yourself.

I guess that's why I have Phd after my name...the next know-nothing generation - lets face it- todays's technology especially as used by the media does not apply well to lesser era's...its not so much mis-spelling, but abbreviations and slangs...

If they are too young to know about him then why are they even "tweeting" about him?
