Bill Maher Compares Mark Sanford's Love Letters To Mark Foley's IMs (VIDEO)

In the past Bill Maher has defended Governor Mark Sanford amidst the furor over his affair because he just seems like a guy lost in the throes of true love. On Friday night, however, Maher took a few shots at the governor, comparing his descriptive love letters to the disturbing texts of disgraced Republican Congressman Mark Foley.

While hilarious, I really feel uncomfortable with the fact that Sanford's private emails were released at all.
I absolutely am glad that the fact of the affair was revealed, to show his hypocracy. For leaving the country, and making himself unavailable without putting the Lt Gov. in charge, I think he should step down as governor.
His love letters though.....Not my business.

Anybody who thinks homophobia will ensue because of this is misguided- homophobes will hate no matter what, and anybody who would shun all gay people because of this are just closet homophobes anyway. I'm gay and I love this sketch it's one of the best ones he's ever done. Bravo!!

I don't think homophobia will ensue and I do think the bit was funny. However, Bill Maher saying that Foley texted "little boys" is a bit homophobic because it reinforces the myth that gay men are pedophiles. This is not to say that Bill Maher is a homophobe, especially not on the level of Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell. Granted Mr. Maher did catch himself, but I think it shows how homophobia (as well as racism) can be internalized and pops out when we least expect it.
