The National:

About every other Friday for most of the past year, John Sexton, the president of New York University, would duck away from his offices above Washington Square to teach a small seminar class on the American separation of church and state. Sexton has always maintained a full professor's teaching load, which is unusual for the chief executive of a large university. What was even more unusual in this case was that the class met 11,000 kilometres away, in Abu Dhabi.

Wasting more of the taxpayer's money and student's tuition on an overseas university is shameful. WHY not lower the tuition fees for those attending here in America instead? Doing this would make way more sense then what they are planning now. New Yorkers need to ask why and do everything within their power to stop this.

Offshore our educational system. Great idea.

Interviewed somebody recently. He had just completed his MBA (in English!) at a supposedly reputable Western University in Dubai. His English was at a pre-intermediate level. I can only speculate about how he coped with his reading material, let alone his assignments and dissertation...
There seems to be very little that money can't buy.

Ya... but barely passable English has been the language of international busines for years, on all continents of this planet....

On the other hand, Arabic is one of the nottest foreign languages on college campuses today....

This is simple, follow the money. UAE is where the money is and the future of our higher academic institutions will be. NYU is not the only one and UAE is not the only country.

NYU is in the need of a cash and the UAE has a lot of it.

....NYU is just the vanguard. With the cash coffers drying up, watch other Ivy League schools follow suit.

Are we trying to make it easy for the terrorists? Now they won't even have to come to America to find plenty of hostages. Insane plan. We should be avoiding the Middle East at all costs, not moving there!

Everyone should write NYU and protest operating there until everyone in Abu Dabai has the right for freedom of speech, full democracy, and full and equal rights for women!

freedom of speech = will arrest and probably execute those who 'insult' islam, tradition, family values, etc...

full democracy = will elect tribal leaders and end up in a similar situation as in now.

equal rights for women = will be regarded as cultural imperialism and be another thing for bin laden to rant about.

Welcome to the real, complicated middle east, oh idealistic neocon!

So I guess when every last job has been shipped overseas, those of us who can't get work slinging hash, pouring booze, or waving our endowments around will be "taken care of" like mice in the crawlspace.

Why not? Nobody here is going to be able to afford to go to school here anymore. Even if they do they won't be able to get a job in the U.S. There are no jobs here anymore unless you're in finance but those will be filled soon. So go to the place where the kids can afford the tuition and have career prospects afterwards.

The task of the Ivy League is to educate Americas ruling classes, no matter where they come from.

In case anyone cares or didn't know, Cornell already has a camps in the Middle East, in Doha, Qatar, actually. So I guess NYU wouldn't be the first one there.

As for other locations, I know top business schools (Harvard, MIT, UPenn) have branch campuses in China.

It's too early to judge NYU's campus in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I think I'll have to see what the curriculum is and what types of students are admitted there before I can pass final judgment. In addition, would their degree indicate that they were school at the branch campus as opposed to the main campus in NYC? That I would like to know for sure. If not, then it clearly dilutes an NYU education, since I believe the Abu Dhabi students may not have been admitted at the NYC campus.

We are outsourcing everything including Education and Universities...is there anymore thing that hasn't been outsourced? I do not think the degree certificates will indicate whether it's the main campus or branch but think will say...graduated...at NYU-AD just like it would be for WCMC-Q.

Hasn't our country been bullied by the Christian right for a couple of decades? Yet more hypocrisy coming from the US of A. Give me a break.

Great...why couldn't NYU use all the $$$ to make it more affordable for students in this country. It was the most expensive school I applied to 15 years ago and ended up in Chicago since the School of the Art Institute was actually considerably cheaper than NYU. I would have preferred to stay in NYC, but too expensive.

Well, there go the high end jobs to another foreign country! Once Halliburton and Cheney took up residence there, this outcome was predictable. Every American who plans to attend NYU in the states, should immediately apply to another school. Also, the NYU alumni should refrain from raising money or making contribution. That is probably there way of avoiding minority and middle class students.

So true. The applicants should go to other schools but they won't. They're much too busy in their little bubbles to understand the implications of supporting this school. Again, well said.

I would rather see U.S. companies and institutions invest more in the U.S. than overseas.

Are we now outsourcing our college educations?

NYU, why not spend the money to build a first class campus in the MidWest (or elsewhere in the U.S._ which specializes in graduate-level manufacturing engineering and have first-class manufacturing facilities to train graduate students in conjunction with U.S. corporations?
