UNALAKLEET, Alaska — She was greeted like a rock star in Unalakleet, a fishing village on the Bering Sea. She danced with Eskimos in Kotzebue. And she watched grizzlies at a wildlife sanctuary on the Kenai Peninsula.

In all, Sarah Palin has been on eight trips outside her Anchorage base since announcing her resignation two weeks ago. Is this a farewell tour, the start of a possible presidential campaign for 2012?

Palin insists it isn't, although she still won't say what plans she has after she steps down as Alaska governor on July 26, with 18 months left to her first term.

"I am Alaskan. I've grown up here and I'm going to remain in Alaska," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "It's not farewell, it's more like thanks for letting me be here and I'll see you soon."

Palin has largely avoided the media limelight in the past two weeks and dodged questions about her future plans. But she hints she has a bigger role in mind, and she plans to launch her new platform by speaking her mind on the social networking site Twitter.

Palin said she is eager to begin life as a private citizen.

"Once I am 'Sarah Palin, Alaskan,' I can really call it like I see it," she said.

Palin waves off any talk of running for president.

"I look forward to continuing to work for Alaska and for energy independence and for the contribution that Alaska could and should be making to allow our nation to be more secure and more prosperous," she said.

Some have speculated she plans to build on her near celebrity status as a conservative talk show host, perhaps for Fox News, or launch a lucrative speaking tour. If her reception Friday in Unalakleet is any indication, she has a strong base of support.

More than 100 people packed a community center and bingo hall to greet the outgoing governor as she signed a bill continuing state subsidies for rural electricity.

The town, known locally as the place where the East wind blows, was an unlikely stop during Palin's final days. A remote collection of unpaved streets on the Bering Sea, the town is so remote that is only reachable by plane and most residents get around by ATV or by foot. There are few cars.

But this is what Palin loves best: Reaching out to Alaskans, no matter how remote. She barely had time to eat lunch – king crab and salmon and a barrage of homemade desserts – as families surged toward her, trying to shake her hand and get an autograph. Pictures of the governor were not enough. Residents wanted to talk to her and pose with her, even as an aide tried in vain to shield the governor and then get her to leave quietly.

Palin smiled through it all, basking in the attention. She nodded sympathetically as a man told her of a relative in Iraq. She hugged a mother whose baby has Down syndrome, as does Palin's youngest child Trig. She signed every post card and datebook thrust in front of her.

Palin says Alaska voters have accepted her decision to resign, even as she continues to receive criticism from the national media and even some fellow Republicans who question her decision to leave with 18 months left in her four-year term.

"We don't give a damn how they do it outside," she said, quoting a popular state bumper sticker. "We do it a different way up here. The pioneer spirit runs strong."

Agnes Baptiste, who posed with Palin and other family members Friday, said she was grateful the governor took the time to come to Unalakleet, 400 miles northwest of Anchorage.

"It's remarkable we can have the opportunity to see her in this community," Baptiste said. Palin "has brought a lot to our state," Baptiste said. "Whatever endeavor she pursues, I know she'll have Alaska in mind."

Davida Hanson, co-owner of Peace on Earth Pizzeria, said she sees a little of herself in Palin: a working mother trying to do what's best for her job and family.

"She wants to be a mom and a family person. It's not a bad thing," Hanson said, recalling that Palin won her heart immediately after taking office, when Palin followed through on a campaign pledge to sell a state jet bought by former Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski. "I love her!" Hanson said.

Not everyone is so impressed. Karen Erickson, owner of the Kuupiaq coffee house, said she thinks Palin has "gone Hollywood" since her selection last year as John McCain's running mate.

"She likes her attention with the media," Erickson said, then adds: "She's done a lot for the state. You have to give her that."

The Rev. Pat McCoy, pastor of the Lighthouse Baptist Church, said he understands why Palin is stepping down.

"If I was her, I'd quit," he said. "Everybody just wants her all the time."

Palin said Alaskans appreciate her desire to help the state avoid a prolonged lame-duck status.

Paul Ivanoff III, community development coordinator for the Norton Sound Economic Development Corp., said there are two Palins – one before she was picked as McCain's running mate, and the current, rock-star version.

"Anybody thrust into the limelight like that will change for good, especially someone as photogenic and popular with the conservative base as Sarah," he said.

Ivanoff said he was saddened and angered by her sudden resignation because it would cost the state significant money and rob it of one of its most valuable resources – Palin.

"In the same breath you have to respect her position," he added. "No matter what elected position you are in, you have to do what's best for you and your family. I respect that."

Only in AK could that dimwit get elected.
The old-fellers at the GOP were waiting for her to shoot herself in the foot...and it happened.
She describes being a lame duck as someone with 17 months left to her post.
Anytime a leader says, the best thing I can do for my people is to step down...well,that is not what is known as leadership.
I can imagine her going out and having ANY republican candidate wanting to have her endorsement or, for goodness sakes, actually be a speaker for said candidates fundraising...YOU TALKING 'BOUT THE KISS OF DEATH....all she brings is lil Bush theology, microphone-induced mouth spasms, and a general lacking in history and geography.
Not only should potential republican candidates not ask her to come to stump for them but the candidates should make sure security will not let her in.

Thanks for what? Doing a horrible job as governor, and abandoing her position with 17 months to go? She should not be thanking people. She should, for once, tell the truth about why she resigned.

I recall that recently Palin referred to AK as a "microcosm of America", but now she's touting, "We don't give a damn how they do it outside," she said, quoting a popular state bumper sticker. "We do it a different way up here. The pioneer spirit runs strong."

This is what happens when you try to play to two diametrically opposed audiences. Palin continues to forget that what she says inside AK "leaks out" to the rest of the world, not just to the rest of the U.S. Telling the rest of the U.S. to "kiss off", in essence, may be mavericky, but doesn't exactly endear her to people looking for a leader who can harness our many diversities.

Shannon Moore wrote "Sarah didn't want the travel costs of a "lame duck governor" to be billed to the state, and blamed her resignation on it in part...but she flew, on state dime, the equivalent of Miami to LA in the seven days since resigning." So there! Palin used state money to travel around even after lying that she resigned to save the state money! This tour is to see how many people still adore her lies.

Oh, yeah, here's the perfect ticket for 2012:

Palin - Suleman

So we'll have Sarah Palin as prez, the OctoMom as vice prez, and maybe we could put in Joe the Plumber as Secretary of State. Of course, since hubby Todd used to help put together the budget for Alaska, he could head up the Treasury (because, really, what more do you need beyond a certificate in auto body shop to be able to cipher some numbers, right??).

You know, these far-right Palin fans have no idea how wacky their crushes are until you actually start visualizing them in their potential positions.

Ok, so now, lemme get this straight . . . so when she says, she will continue to work for AK for energy independence, or whatever . . . Is this a paying gig? If so, who will her employer be?

Her employer will be every slack-jawed conservative who thinks Sarah Palin has been put on earth to save America from all the scary smart people. Personally, I think it's kind of amusing watching Miss Iquitarod separate the fools from their money.

What a crock. This chick ups and abondons her post by quitting her job. A job she was elected to by the voters of Alaska. She decides that she doesn't want the job anymore and resigns. What kind of $h*t is this? What is up with you people in AK? Some of you treat her like she is a movie star.

Palin quit her job in the middle of her obligation. Why? When people talk of her "stepping down," they are missing the point. She quit when things got tough. She'll learn to spin it to her advantage, and some will fall for it. But the truth is, she quit when the going got tough.

Andrew Jackson resigned after one session as Senator Tenn 1799, he resigned after less than year as Territory Gov Florida, he resigned after 2 1/2 years as US Senator from Tenn 1825. No jobs were lined up after any of his resignations. He is a founder of modern Dem Party and a 3 time quitter.
He became President in 1829.

Sorry, that doesn't mean SP is equipped to be anything more than a small town mayor and even then she left the city 20 mil in debt as well as in litigation for building city facility on property not even owned by the city. Nice try though.

Okay, Voodoo, you're kidding, right? In order to find an example of somebody as bad as Palin (in terms of quitting), you had to go all the way back to 1799??? And your point is -- WHAT?????

Are we supposed to say, "Hey, back in the 18th Century when people used muskets to fight wars and oil lamps to light their homes, America had a political leader who quit public office. Wow, maybe this is an omen that a quitter would make a terrific president in the 21st Century!!"

I'm serious. What IS your point on this??

Hey, wake up....the year is 2009.....not 1829.

If you haven't noticed, the world is a bit more complicated than it was in 1829 and the expectations of our leaders is much greater. We have moved beyond territories to actual states.

Greeted like a rock star in Unalakleet, gotta love it. I had to pull out the big detailed map of Alaska to see where it is. Why didn't she tour around Alaska as the governor before?

Best bits about the Palin polling data:

- Gov. Palin's highest favorable ratings are among 18-29 year olds (51-46) and 30-45 year olds (51-41);
- among female voters, her unfavorable rating is now down to just minus one (45-46);
- she has a positive rating among independent voters (45-43);
- she scores plus eight (51-43) among Hispanic voters - by far the best of any of the four GOP candidates, winning 35 percent of all Hispanic voters in a direct matchup with Obama (compared to 27 percent for Huckabee and just 21 percent for Romney);
- she also has by far the highest positive ratings among Republican voters of any of the four GOP candidates. She scores 76-19, compared to Gingrich's 65-17, Huckabee's 66-19 and Romney's rather miserable 54-25.

This is going to good!

Nice cherry-picking of a minor poll of no consequence. Who cares where she ranks three years before a presidential election? She will be "toast" before then because the $$$ forces in the GOP will grind her up and spit her out before then. Don't confuse how the Repugs USE Palin vs. how they VIEW Palin as a presidential candidate. Those two things don't synch up.

I think Alaska is a beautiful state, but it, like so many other beautiful states, is INFESTED with ignorance as is testified by the number of citizens there who actually support such an OBVIOUS PHONEY like Palin.

SupportED Palin. If you read the many postings on www.adn.com, Alaska's largest newspaper, you'd see that Alaskans feel betrayed by her quitting her post midway. Even her most ardent base has a P.R. problem positioning her abdication as "good for Alaska."

All this "Palin-Hate" would be so funny if it was no so sad...
But i can understand how none of youy have anything better to do though.
Considering with Obamas policies in effect, most of you probably dont have jobs to go to...you probably cant afford to got to a movie or out to eat...so you sit at home in front of your computers, on the internet you are stealing from your neightbors wireless router....just to make fun of your BIG problem, Sarah Palin.
Cuz god knows, you have ablolutely NOTHING BETTER TO DO...

I know you cant know that ther is a record deficit in the country right now, becuase you just have to talk about Palin...
You can't know that most of our states are trying to figure out how not to go bankrupt, because you have to badmouth Palin.
You probably dont know that we have the biggest unemployment issues this generation has ever faced, but it will be over by the time you make your negative point about Palin...

How sad is it to see adults acting no better than school yard bullies...all this woman did was get asked to be the Vice presidential candidate. The left and all of its lackeys have been hounding her ever since.
The country is falling apart around you all and all you can do is bad mouth sarah Palin...?

No, we have a lot of other conservatives to badmouth too. After all, the conservatives are the reason so many people are sitting at home, rather than working.

Don't you ever forget that Ronald Reagan doubled the national debt during his time in office which Dubya almost did better!!! The reason we're in this mess now is in large part due to GOP incompetence. Funny, yes indeed, but sad that you people lack the intellectual honesty to call out incompetent people within your ranks.

Don't YOU have anything better to do, than play that poor Palin violin?

Here is what Alaskans think of Palin resigning, an editorial from "The Nome Nugget", the oldest newspaper in the state and yes, a member of the AP.

I'll give you a hint....the last sentence says" don't let the door hit you on the way out"

So, let me get this straight: unemployment is due to the administration of the last six months and owes nothing to the greed of an unregulated Wall Street or the meltdown of the real-estate market because of subprime loans? Yes, there IS a record deficit right now, MOST of which came from the previous administration.

The reason to "badmouth" Palin is that we don't want her in ANY national office because she is clueless as to how to help fix a worldwide recession. Do you really think that a degree in journalism is the right "equipment" to deal with the complex economic, fiscal and foreign policy issues we are facing as a nation?

We want her to fade away instead of "charging through" that next door that her narcissistic persona thinks is opening for her. If she stayed in AK, none of us would complain -- except Alaskans who feel that she deserted them byu QUITTING in the middle of her term.
