Jenna, Barbara Bush Were Secret Service Nightmare: Book

A new book by Ronald Kessler claims the Bush twins gave Secret Service agents lots of trouble.

"Jenna would purposely try to lose her protection by going through red lights or by jumping in her car without telling agents where she was going. As a result, in a total waste of manpower, the Secret Service kept her car under surveillance so agents could follow her," he writes, according to a New York Post preview.

In his book "Bush's Law," New York Times reporter Eric Lichtblau wrote that the Secret Service worked with Mexican government agents to help a 19-year-old Jenna Bush go on a bar-hopping trip south of the border. The story was set to run in a major newspaper on September 12, 2001; it was never published.

Kessler, a former reporter for the Washington Post, now writes for the conservative website Newsmax. His book, "In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect," comes out in August.

Before leaving office, President Bush signed a directive authorizing the Secret Service to provide a period of extended protection for Jenna and Barbara.

Sounds like they were being typical crazy teenagers, not wanting to be watched over by adults. However, I wonder if these problems of protection were debriefed to the President and his wife. They were their parents, not the Secret Service agents.

Not surprised at all. I know a girl who was a Seabee assigned to Camp David. She told me about what rude, bratty jerks those girls were, and how condescending they were to her and the other Seabees assigned there. They treated them like slaves and had no regard for the fact that someone had to pick up the tremendous messes they left after their parties. Just a typical sense of entitlement of the rich, I guess.

There were Seabees assigned there, one of my former Navy buddies was assigned there with the Marines. I never talked to him about the behavior of the Bush Twins so who knows...

If the Obama girls are out of bounds for this kind of story then the Bush girls should be as well. They were teenagers and I don't know about you, but I did plenty of stuff in those years that I'm glad no press was around to see and publish. You can despise her father's actions as president - and I do - without picking on his kids.

And Chelsea Clinton also received extended secret service protection past the end of her father's term. That's as it should be. Let the proper people make that call based on their knowledge and the situation. For any of us to assume we can judge the rightness of that call is ridiculous.

Just two points: first - you're basing this on the fact that someone is writing a book claiming it to be true. Doesn't make it so. Second - why call them brats? you don't know them so why use the nasty language?

As a teenager I can say that them trying to lose the long arm of their parents (in their minds, anyway), the ss, is definitely not that crazy. Irresponsible? Ungrateful? Probably. But kids need to do it this way sometimes.

As for their characters in general, I can't vouch either way, so I won't.
