BANGKOK — The tiny island nation of Tuvalu, already under threat from rising seas caused by global warming, vowed Sunday to do its part for climate change by fueling its economy entirely from renewable sources by 2020.

The South Pacific nation of 12,000 people is part of a movement of countries and cities committed to going climate neutral. Since February 2008, 10 nations including New Zealand, Pakistan, Iceland and Costa Rica have vowed to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases as part of a goal of reaching zero emissions in the next decade.

None of these commitments alone is expected to make a significant difference in the fight to cut heat-trapping gases. But the United Nations and many environmentalists say the moves can inspire bigger emitters like the United States and China to take bolder steps to limit their carbon footprints.

"In a sense, they are paving the way for medium and larger economies which have to move if we are going combat climate change," said Nick Nuttal, spokesman for the United Nations Environment Programme. It sponsors the Climate Neutral Network, a group of 100 governments, nongovernment groups and companies looking to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. "These smaller economies are out to prove you can do it, and do it faster than some people previously thought."

Major polluters at the Group of Eight nations' summit earlier this month failed to agree on commitments to reduce carbon emissions. That indicates how difficult it will be to craft a new climate treaty later this year in Copenhagen, Denmark, one that would be a successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.

Climate scientists have urged rich countries to reduce emissions from 2005 levels by between 25 percent and 40 percent by 2020 to avoid the worst effects of warming, which they say will lead to widespread drought, floods, higher sea levels and worsening storms.

For its part, Tuvalu hopes to replace the fossil fuels that it imports by ship with solar energy and wind power, a project that it expects will cost $20 million.

Tuvalu already releases almost no greenhouse gases. But because of climate change, many South Pacific islands see worsening flooding amid predictions of a large sea level rise this century.

The country is just 10 square miles (26 square kilometers) in size, with most of its land less than a yard (meter) above sea level.

So far, Tuvalu has installed a 40 kilowatt solar energy system with the help of Japan's Kansai Electric Power Co. and Tokyo Electric Power Company, both members of the e8, an international nonprofit organization of 10 leading power utilities from G8 countries.

"There may be other, larger solar power installations in the world, but none could be more meaningful to customers than this one," Takao Shiraishi, general manager of the Kansai Electric Power Co., said in a statement.

"The plight of Tuvalu versus the rising tide vividly represents the worst early consequence of climate change," he added. "For Tuvalu, after 3,000 years of history, the success of U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen this December may well be a matter of national survival."

The Tuvalu government is working to expand the initial $410,000 project from 40 to 60 kilowatts, and will extend solar power to outer islands, starting later this year with the commission of a $800,000, 46 kilowatt solar power system for a secondary school. The Italian government is supporting the project.

"We thank those who are helping Tuvalu reduce its carbon footprint as it will strengthen our voice in those international negotiations," Public Utilities and Industries Minister Kausea Natano said in a statement. "And we look forward to the day when our nation offers an example to all – powered entirely by natural resources such as the sun and the wind."

Tuvalu is not sinking.

The Pacific island nation of Tuvalu made waves last year when it claimed that global warming was causing the gradual sinking of its land mass. Tuvalu, which is north of Fiji, wanted compensation from nations such as the United States to help evacuate the island. A new report suggests there was good reason to be skeptical of Tuvalu’s claim.

Goldman Sachs to be carbon regulator?

So does this mean that freebooting Goldman Sachs could be the de facto regulator of the carbon market?

As the global warming bubble inflates and then bursts, will Goldman
Sachs self-regulate all the way to the bank making record profits at the expense and misery of taxpayers and consumers

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principal gas that trees and other plants need to survive, just like oxygen (O2) is the principal gas
that humans and other animals require.
Trees absorb CO2 and release O2-- animals inhale O2 and exhale CO2. See how nice this all works!

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is not to be confused with its poisonous evil cousin carbon monoxide (CO), which can kill humans and
animals in just a few minutes. Life as we know it could not exist without carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.

We actually agree: this ACES bill sucks. It's the largest new derivatives market in history, and they have the gall to call it a climate bill.

1$ per ton carbon/pollution equivalents emitted, and then use the money for financing rooftop solar and bioFuels.

How does this relate to worldwide deforestation? Nature was in balance when it only had to deal with the CO2 it emitted. Now we are pumping billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year that was stored over hundreds of millions of years as coal, oil and natural gas. Thus the system is out of balance due to man. It is especially out of balance when deforestation is added to the equation. The ocean is the other giant CO2 sink in the form of carbonic acid and it is at capacity- which explains the current acidification of the oceans.

If it were only as simple as you make it, then we would have nothing to worry about. The Amazon Rain Forest emerged as net emitter of CO2 3 years ago due to the combination of slash and burn practices and the removal of giant swaths of forest from the practice that would have otherwise kept it a net oxygen emitter. It appears that you have only read the first chapter of the science book. As you get toward the end, you will find out about methane stored in permafrost and methane ice. The next two ticking time bombs that are 25 percent more potent as GHG's than CO2. The last chapter deals with the planets albedo effect. Keep reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Explain why ice cover has been increasing in the Arctic Al.
Snow & Ice Data
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/
It is interesting to monitor the Snow and Ice Data Centre & their Sea Ice Outlook site with their predictions regarding ice cover at the end of the northern melt season in September. Their present estimate released on 4/7/09 was based on data to the end of June. Their next report is due within the next three days. Their present report is beginning to look overly pessimistic going by their daily graph. Contrary to predictions the ice cover for September 08 was greater than for 07. Another indicator going the wrong way for the True Believers?

Prices sound way too high.

Perhaps because of the remoteness.

Commercial rooftop solar installed is running about 2$ per peak for the most recent thin film.

So 800k$ should buy 400KW, no 48kw.

Perhaps it includes storage.

1.85 per peak watt! retail

NASA has corrected its US temperature records, the hottest year on record is no longer 1998, but 1934.
Five of the ten hottest years since 1880 were between 1920 and 1940 " and the 15 hottest years since 1880 are spread across seven decades.
This suggests natural variation, not a warming trend. Plant and insect remains found at the base of Greenland"s ice sheet indicate that,
just 400,000 years ago, the island was blanketed in forests and basking in temperatures perhaps 27 degrees F warmer than today.

Newsweek said climate holocaust "deniers" had received $19 million from industry, to subvert the "consensus"
it claims exists about global warming. It made no mention of the $50 BILLION that alarmists and other beneficiaries have received since 1990
from governments, foundations and corporations (including Exxon,Big Banks,GE)

ExxonMobil in a well publicized move a few years ago gave $100 million to Stanford University to study global warming issues.
Much of that money went to environmentalist type projects.

First, oil companies should love the rhetoric of global warming. They would be watching with glee.
If the public is conditioned to believe in alternatives such as wind at $200 per barrel of oil equivalent or solar at $1,000,
if taxes are supposed to force conservation while the public uses more and more energy, guess what gift is handed to those that manage oil and gas.

"The historical record shows no visual evidence of any acceleration in sea level trends," Australia's National Tidal Facility (NTF) said in a statement about Tuvalu this week ."

"A tide gauge to measure sea level has been in existence at Tuvalu since 1977, run by the University of Hawaii It showed a negligible increase of only 0.07 mm per year over two decades It fell three millimeters between 1995 and 1999."

"NTF, which has a network of tide gauges across the Pacific, says absolutely not so .

The Pacific shows no signs, anywhere, of rising ."

NTF deputy head Bill Mitchell told AFP that the absolute contrast between politics and science was developing into a crisis. His organization is holding urgent talks with the Tuvalu Government to sort out the problem ."

Beyond the dispute over the alarmists’ blatant manipulation of data, the larger and more important issue is that global warming theory is no longer a testable scientific theory—assuming it ever was one. The alarmists claimed Antarctica was warming because of a human-induced climate crisis. When it was shown Antarctica is cooling, the alarmists flip-flopped and claimed Antarctic cooling indicated a human-induced climate crisis. When that party line was no longer convenient, they flip-flopped again.

Sound science dictates that a theory be testable and conform to known facts. When it is asserted that anything and everything that could possibly happen is consistent with, and indeed affirmative evidence for, a certain set of beliefs, that is not science. That is dogma, and nothing more.

Take a look at the cover of Al Gore's DVD:

http://www.amazon.com/Inconvenient-Truth-Al-Gore/dp/B000ICL3KG

Notice the hurricane coming from the smokestack?

http://www.coaps.fsu.edu/~maue/tropical/

"As the middle of July approaches, Northern Hemisphere TC activity begins to pick up with the WPAC, EPAC, and NATL basins often seeing plenty of strong cyclones.
In terms of ACE, the NH total to date has varied considerably during the past 30-years. The figure shows the calendar year ACE to date for the past 30-years for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole. July 13, 2009.

Using a longer-database of hurricane tracks for the globe, the recent downturn in global TC energy is nearing record low levels of inactivity - the lowest in 50-years. "

What does this data tell us?

1. If global warming does cause an increase in the frequency and intensity of hurricanes, then based on the physical data, there is no global warming.

2. There is global warming, but it does not cause an increase in either the frequency or intensity of hurricanes and Al Gore used natural disasters in an effort to scare people.

There is a guy in New Jersey who runs his house purely off solar, even during Christmas Eve.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=hydrogen-house

It's not completely economically feasible for the United States. However, if you lived on that island and that was your home, where your family slept, how much would you pay to insure their safety and continue your way of life?

So as you can see, energy can be converted from light to electrical to chemical and stored in that form until it is needed as electrical again. Please take your ignorance elsewhere.

So shouldn't we expect rich liberals who are concerned about "climate change" to pay, out of their own pocket, for such conversions to their own homes?

When will Nancy Pelosi convert her home?

Shouldn't she being doing something to offset her frequent flights around the world?

When will those who passed the cap-n-steal tax increase start making sacrifices themselves?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124650399438184235.html

"Hundreds of lawmakers traveled overseas in 2008 at a cost of about $13 million. That's a 50% jump since Democrats took control of Congress two years ago."

"Paris Air Show
In mid-June, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D., Hawaii) led a group of a half-dozen senators and their spouses on a four-day trip to France for the biennial Paris Air Show. An itinerary for the event shows that lawmakers flew on the Air Force's version of the Boeing 737, which costs $5,700 an hour to operate. They stayed at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel, which advertises rooms from $460 a night."

When Sen. Inouye plunks down $500k of his own money to make his house carbon-neutral and offset his raping of the environment, then they can preach to the rest of us.

I'm not a 'rich' Liberal,... but I am a Liberal AND am saving up to do exactly that - add rooftop solar.

And while a nice tax-rebate would be happily pocketed - I plan on being able to finance it with, or without a rebate.

The energy saviing oven, diswhasher, and LED lighting are also on the saving list for the next year or three.

I look forward to happily selling the surplus electricity back into the grid when the time comes. I may be a Liberal, but I do belive in a bit of capitalism.

That's great. Look at all who are subsidizing this. Reading between the lines...It's too expensive for us to do it, but if someone else wants to pay for it, fine. It doesn't mention how they are going to compensate for their power at night, during cloudy days, or when the wind is not adequately blowing.
