Swine Flu Profits: Drug Companies To Reap Billions

Financial Times:

Some of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies are reaping billions of dollars in extra revenue amid global concern about the spread of swine flu.

Analysts expect to see a boost in sales from GlaxoSmithKline, Roche and Sanofi-Aventis when the companies report first-half earnings lifted by government contracts for flu vaccines and antiviral medicines.

There is an easy way to immunize yourself against any flu: get it and suffer through a week of misery. Problem solved, zero direct cost to you. Lot of indirect cost, though... you might miss days at work, infect other people, etc..

So now ask yourself if that's really worth saving the money on a flu shot?

Say, there's a business model for you! Have your labs mutate a flu virus, release it into the general population then be the only companies that have a vaccine available to fight it. Think of the revenue stream! And Government Leaders will beat a path to your door if you would only release the flu into the their general populations to distract them from a corruption scandal, or exposed marital infidelity, or election fraud, or some other disturbing issue that might have a negative impact on the status quo. Cool idea, huh?

The one time I had a flu shot was the sickest I've ever been in my life. I'll take my chances without pharmaceuticals. Exposure is fundamental to a strong immune system. Diet and exercise play their parts too. At 50, I haven't needed a doctor since my son was born 20 yrs. ago, and that was only for the delivery.

There is a certain amount of compensation that is fair for goods and services performed. Depending on the goods being offered and the services being performed, that amount varies. I think it should vary based mostly on difficulty and amount of skill and education directly required. I believe that the compensation for drug companies should mostly come in the form of grants for research given when PROVEN advancements have been made while profit from the sales of medicine should be mostly returned to the communities being served. I believe this because while advancements in medicine are most desirable, people in need of medicine should never be denied help when it is available. If there really is a swine flu epidemic, what is the total number of affected people, how much vaccine is needed, and how much will basic manufacturing and distribution cost? A small, reasonable amount above that is what the manufacturers should be allowed to collect from everyone; the rest should be spread around.

There will never be a cure for anything as long as Drug Companies are allowed to control research. It's all about management of symptoms now. Pharmaceutical companies are bigger whores for the dollar than oil companies and are criminal entities, if you ask me.

Drug companies are not controlling research. Almost all medical and biochemical research into pathways and biology of disease happens at universities on government grants. The only thing drug companies do is to develop the drugs that are the endpoint of this basic research. Big difference... For many diseases more than symptomatic relief is not possible at the current time because we do not understand how to replace broken biochemical pathways. The best candidate for many of these was and is gene therapy. But sadly the human organism has shown an amazing reluctance to accept foreign DNA and process it as its own. That's less surprising once you acknowledge that viruses have been trying for millions of years to bypass our defense systems and the only reason we are here is because we do not let them. That, of course, also means that naive gene therapy does not work. And with that the hope of many patients to find complete cures for their diseases is close to nil. That's not the fault of the industry but a fact of life.

Here's some homework:

The "swine flu" is not as strong as other strains of flu that are circulating throughout the world as we speak.

And no healthy adult, with no history of respiratory or immunological disorders, should be getting vaccinated anyway.
