Angelina Jolie took a day trip on Thursday to Baghdad.

The actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador is there to speak out for aid on behalf the millions of Iraqis displaced within their own country and the 1.5 million more Iraqis displaced out of the country.

This is her third visit to the country in recent years.

On Tuesday afternoon Jolie and eldest son Maddox took off from LAX, where they were heading to the 24th annual Arab Children's Congress in Amman, Jordan.

The pair were reportedly going to be staying with Jolie's friend Queen Noor.

Below the video and photos is a full press release on her visit from the UNHCR.

PRESS RELEASE

BAGHDAD - UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie returned to Iraq on Thursday to offer support to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who remain displaced within their own country.

During her day-long visit to Baghdad, Jolie visited a makeshift settlement for internally displaced people in the Chikook suburb of north-west Baghdad where she met four families displaced from the district of Abu Ghraib, located to the west of Baghdad, and from the western suburbs of the capital.

Despite the difficulties in Iraq, Jolie said this was a moment of opportunity for Iraqis to rebuild their lives. "This is a moment where things seem to be improving on the ground, but Iraqis need a lot of support and help to rebuild their lives."

The families that Jolie met complained that their children could not go to school and they could not afford to pay for medical treatment for various ailments. 43-year-old Ali* built his crude brick dwelling in Chikook after escaping from Abu Ghraib district with his 38-year-old wife and six children four years ago.

"The only help that we got was from UNHCR. They are the only people who knocked on our door. But look at this life, it's very hard on us," he said. "It takes a lot of strength for you to survive this life. I don't know if I would be strong enough to survive this," Jolie told him.

In a nearby house, the acclaimed actress met a family of nine, including children who don't go to school and a baby with a rash all over its body. Jolie rocked the new-born on her lap throughout the visit. A daughter-in-law studied law before the violence forced the family into flight and ended her education.

"No way," the family said in unison when asked by Jolie if they wanted to return to their former home district. "Our neighbours returned and their three daughters were killed," the daughter-in-law, Salwa,* said. "Why is this happening to us?," she asked.

"They are right to feel that it is not fair," said Jolie, who pledged to return to Iraq. "I want to come back and find you in a better place and in a different situation. We hope that UNHCR and the government will support you in getting a piece of land. You need help not because you are poor, but because you are the future of Iraq," she stressed, adding that she hoped Salwa would be able to become a lawyer.

"The picture in this camp is a rough one but there are also some people that were able to return home to other safer areas," Jolie said later. "There are some changes. There are returns of displaced people, not a big number but there is progress."

Chikook is home to more than 20,000 people, mostly women and children and including several thousand local people. It lacks drinking water, an operational sewage system and paved roads. The area is littered with garbage, despite a UNHCR-organized clean-up earlier this year.

The UN refugee agency has been trucking in potable water for the residents over the past few months, and has worked on the rehabilitation of the water system and conducted minor shelter repairs.

UNHCR estimates that 1.6 million Iraqis were internally displaced by a wave of sectarian warfare that erupted in February 2006 after the bombing of a mosque in the ancient city of Samarra. Almost 300,000 have returned to their homes amid a general improvement in the security situation since mid-2008.

Since April last year, UNHCR has provided emergency shelter rehabilitation and shelter upgrade to 5,000 families. Close to 20,000 homes will be rehabilitated by the end of this year. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees remain in neighbouring countries, mainly Syria and Jordan.

Jolie was making her third trip to Iraq. In August 2007, she visited 1,200 refugees trapped in Al Waleed camp near the border with Syria. She also visited the country in February last year, when she highlighted the problems faced by the internally displaced and urged action to help them.

Angie gave over $3 million dollars to refugees outright over the last 8 years, at least. She also fully funds 12 schools in Africa aloneand 3 schools, 3 health care clinics and 2 orphanages in Cambodia. She also supports 3 major wildlife refuges. She and Brad fully fund the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Millennium Project that encompasses an area housing 6,000 villagers.

Angelina has done this work for years and quite a bit of what she does is never shown on camera. She does not need to put her life in jeopardy or do this work for publicity - all she would have to do is walk down a red carpet for that. She truly cares about these people and all of us should. At the end of the day we are all in this together. Many of the refugees are children that do not have a voice or are not heard unless someone famous gives them a voice. Yes we have people in need here & we should be concerned about them as well. The people overseas though are fighting a battle that many of us cannot even relate to. It is easy to criticize others or put them down - but all of us need to look in the mirror because change starts with that person staring back at us. When have you helped a neighbor, stranger or done anything even slightly outside of your comfort zone?? Angelina does a lot of work that no one sees. She thanks all the people that work with her in this effort as well. I am sure that she is not perfect, but she is trying to do something worthwhile and help others, I give her credit for that. She donates thousands, millions here & overseas - when was the last time you donated even a $1 or gave your time.

Just because some of the posters here don't care for Jolie doesn't mean they don't donate their time and resources and money to charitable causes. The two aren't mutually exclusive. What are you saying, that if you don't like this actress you must not be a humanitarian? That's ludicrous.

Good for her if she does some charitable work, but she's far from the only celeb or average person that does so - she's just much better at manipulating the public and the mass media into thinking she's doing more than everyone else. And from reading a lot of the posts here it looks like a lot of people are buying it. I have donated my time and money for a lot longer than this woman has been famous. So? Really, enough of the posts attempting to make people feel they're "wrong" if they don't like this actress. There are a lot of other actors I don't like, by the way, but no one seems to take it personally about those people. Jolie is nothing if not polarizing.

Thank God quite a bit of what Jolene does is never shown on camera. I may be in the minority, but I happen to want my chil'ren to grow up lookin at a traffic cone as nothing but a safety device used in constructions zones.

Sister, if you think this is anything but PR you are mistaken. Who else is going to pay for Angie's SEVEN chateaus, her dozen round-the-clock -nannies, groundskeepers, cooks, assistants, bodyguards, gardeners, housekeepers, trainers, mechanics for their colossal plane and motorcycle collections plus God knows what else...all times SEVEN!!! Think of that carbon footprint. Brangelina is a country unto itself.

BP & AJ are no Olivier & Leigh...How else can they sustain the lifestyle to which they have grown addicted? They have made a pact with the tabloids and hope some loyal fans will buy what they are selling.

They are at it again. Some posting here conveniently forgot that AJ has been involved in humanitarian efforts prior to Brad Pitt and the family.

As a community service volunteer, I congratulate her efforts to bring awareness to the plight of those in need. Now if we could just collectively expend our energies on helping our fellow man instead of people bashing...

Yes, I do hope that Jolie's tabloid following starts donating their money to charities instead of buying the magazines that feature her. That would be a start. But I doubt that it's going to happen. The people who actually do want to make a difference, and walk the walk, don't rely on a tabloid fixture to show them the way. They're already making it happen.

Aside from all that, despite what you think you cannot MAKE people like this actress. If they don't like her and don't buy into her PR so what? Is it really that big of a deal to you? I post on this site about other celebs I don't care for and no one gets riled up. Just the loonies, quite frankly.

Brown-nosing is that quickest way to the tiny chip of crushed ice that AJ calls a heart. It is a well-documented fact that Jolene is an afficianado of the Rusty Trombone.

Most and foremost, Angie has set the tone on how our world is flat, and that there is no global boundary or limitation as to how far we should extend our lending hands to humanity. It goes beyond our own backyard.

"Children in need are not 'sexy' so celebrities like Jolie and Winfrey go to Iraq and
Africa because this is 'sexy.'"

What a bunch of c r a p!

There is a great need to help children in the USA and around the world and there
is NOTHING SEXY about starving, homeless war wounded children.
And there is NOTHING SEXY about committing yourself to do it.
For you to dismiss the good work of anyone
is despicable. It is heartbreaking work wherever it is done and it takes courage
and stamina to do it.
If you have no idea the damage done by war then go volunteer at a VA Hospital.

Angelina Jolie does work helping Refugees.
The work she does is important. Very important.
Celebrities, like Angelina Jolie, also, bring awareness, donations and more
volunteers to good causes.

If you want to help children in the America or anywhere else then
get out there and volunteer.

I completely agree everyday people need to be profiled more.

However, I still respect any celebrity who voluntarily goes out of their comfort zone to bring attention to the plight of people beyond U.S. borders.

The unfortunate reality is many people don't at least pay attention if a celebrity is not involved.

Good for Brangelina.

Or a reason to escape the reality she bought. What is it - six children under the age of seven? Whatever happened to her promised retirement? Some people will go to such extremes to get out of the house...

Enough already! Let's stop idolizing celebrities and plastering their faces everywhere. What about us common folk who do extraordinary things everyday; common folk like teachers and social workers, who care for the children of our country? We have kids right here, who are abused, neglected, suffering from incurable diseases, and hungry. Children in need are not "sexy", so celebrities like Jolie and Winfrey go to Iraq and Africa because that is "sexy". Why not adopt an African American kid? There are many in need of a family to love them. I guess that wouldn't be "sexy" either.

I'm weary of all this attention given to celebrities. We pay them big bucks to entertain us and we glorify their every move. It's really a sick obsession we have.
