SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - In a white-walled hospital room, pancreatic cancer slowly drained all the life that remained in Carolyn.

There was nothing more to do for this 62-year-old woman " no oxygen or other life support, just a morphine drip to keep her as comfortable as possible.

I think it's beautiful that the harpist can adjust the flow with the dying's heartbeat. I think all we cancern surivivors who never really know "if" the terrorist will return, think of dying and how it will be. Oregon IS way ahead of the curve. I'm in CA..where we don't have death with dignity...so I just have to HOPE the pain medication is MAJOR..I'm not afraid to die anymore, just afraid of horrible pain...I would like to leave this world listening to the Heartbeat of God..and I think a harp might be as close as a mere human can get...just lovely....kudos to these beautiful people.....

If someone was playing a harp next to me when I was on my deathbed, I'd strangle them. I want Black Flag.

I wish my mother had had something like this at the end.

I wouldn't mind a bit of music at my end, but it would have to be my kind of music. New Age, a.k.a. the New Elevator Music, would aggravate, not soothe me. I'd want a beautiful adagio movement from a beloved piano concerto or symphony.

I was living in Brookings ten years ago and my mom came to live with us while she was dying. We had a county home hospice program that was wonderful. I could give her the painkillers as often as she wanted because the theory is to stop the pain cycle in the bud because the more pain grows, the harder it is to treat. We know how to do things right in Oregon when it comes to death.

This isn't new. This is part of high-end palliative care that was featured on NPR's ToTN back in the days when Ray Suarez was host.

Agreed. I've been posting music-related research for a year and I featured this back in December.
