$1 Trillion Visualized (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/27/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:45 PM ET

By now we know that the bailout probably won't cost $23.7 trillion, but the tab will certainly run in the trillions of dollars. Either way, one trillion dollars is an almost stupefying number. How many lattes could you buy for $1 trillion? According to this new video from Mint.com, the personal finance website, for $1 trillion you could buy a $3 latte everyday for 900 million years. Yikes.

According to the calculations compiled by Mint, that $1 trillion could also fund the military of all the NATO countries combined, is twice the cost of the new deal and is bigger than Australia's GDP. In other words, it's a staggeringly big figure.

"By now we know that the bailout probably won't cost $23.7 trillion"
And we know that how? I disagree. As of last November Bloomberg already calculated that the bailout cost was over $8 trillion, and Solari added another $3 trillion to that figure in March. With all of the money the Fed and the Treasury have been brokering in back room deals since then, I wouldn't be surprised if $24 trillion is a low ball figure.

No amount of money can replace a loved one who was not insured and died. And every member of congress and lobbyists fighting against it I am sure never went in the "donut hole"

Or a trillion bucks can buy one thing worth a trillion bucks, like healthcare for a whole nation for a very long time.

Laura Bush - $ 300,000,000.00 for her charity from the Republican controlled Congress.

Lynn Cheny - $300,000.000.00 for her charity from the Republican controlled Congress.

Brabara Bush- $300,000,000.00 for her charity from the Republican controlled Congress.

From Jan of 2002 to today NO ACCOUNTING of how the money had been spent.

How much do they take as pay checks to run their charities ????

WELFARE !!!!!!!!!!!!

We do know Lynn Cheny spent $150,000.00 to REORDER invitations because the invitation printed on recycled paper looked dirty she said.

That is the last we heard of how they spent the TAXPAYERS MONEY !

Where are these little gems BEFORE we spend the money?

You righties have been chanting the same thing all along. If your boy didn't commit to unnecessary wars and otherwise screw up our country for 8 years straight maybe you wouldn't have as much of a whipping boy in Obama.

why does the left think 2 wrongs make a right?
01:41 PM on 07/27/2009
I think what you're trying to say is stimulus money being spent on bathroom renovations is somehow a reflection of the POTUS and his background as a community organizer which he was "somewhat decent at that job skill" as you like to put it, and that isn't a good allocation of federal funds. Additionally, your sarcasm would lead us to beleive that you don't like spending money to fix toilets and they should all fix themselves. Ok, think I got it.

Now that I've deciphered your post.

1. The money being spent is within federal properties, some of which are in National Forests, are more than likely in a state of needed repair. As with many federal projects politicians like to put their names on publicly approved projects but typically fail in the long run to support them after they've been built. Some Americans would rather have the forests cut down by loggers to turn a penny then support their preservation instead of creating jobs for plumbers, carpentars, and electricians here in the States.

2. If I'm reading you correctly you'd rather have not money be set aside to renovate and fix these bathrooms. While I don't agree with you that the money shouldn't have been spent, I would agree with you that perhaps the amount of money spent should be accounted for. Similarly to the extravagant purchases the government is known for, they can often time be excessively overcharged if they don't have someone keeping an eye on it.

This as I am preparing to go for the first interview I've had for a job in my field since 2003, and it pays half of what I used to earn.

I just threw up in my mouth.

Visualize the 8-9 trillion Georgie put us into debt for whilst selling this country to China and others.

Understanding that Bushies damage hasn't fully played out yet, when he took office the Debt was at 6 Trillion, so it's not 8-9 Trtillons..... yet.

The clearest explaination for me is using stacks of 100 dollar bills.

* Million Dollars: A four inch stack of 100s.
* Billion Dollars: A 358 feet high stack or lay it down... a bit longer than a football field
* Trillion Dollars: Stack 68 Miles high or lay the stack down and drive for 65 miles.

This was best explained in Chap 11 of Chris Martensen's Crash Course video:

The Crash course is also useful for getting the "big picture" of what is happening...

62 billion for the F22 program.. That's a lot of health care for kids.

Obama repeated a pledge on Friday that reforming the health-care system won't add to the deficit. He said about two-thirds of the cost would come from Medicare and Medicaid savings. Congress, he said, is "working diligently" with the White House on the other third

In addition to creating a public health-insurance option, the House bill would also set up a health insurance "exchange" in which individuals and businesses could shop for coverage.

In the House, the Energy and Commerce Committee met Friday on the bill. But the road in that panel is likely to be longer: It is home to seven members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog coalition of Democrats.--Market watch 17 July 2008

Meanwhile the CBO said that Medicare savings under the health care plan might add up to $2 billion. So unless Obama's health care plan only costs $3 billion, he's a little off on his 2/3's estimate. All government programs understate costs. That's the nature of state economic calculation.
11:32 AM on 07/27/2009
Funny that there are 7 bluedogs on the CBO panel.
01:29 PM on 07/27/2009
Let's see, Obama went after all the wasteful spending in the budget and came up with 18 Billion in a 3+ Trillion dollar budget and you somehow think they are going to come up with many more billions than that in Medicare and Medicaid...???? You really don't believe these people do you?
11:11 AM on 07/27/2009
it may be worth reminding people of a bit of history here. In 2003, amid a war in Iraq and a sluggish economy and all the rest, a Republican Congress and a Republican president passed the Medicare Drug Benefit. The Medicare Drug Benefit, according to the most recent estimate I've seen (which is from early 2007), is now expected to cost $964 billion over 10 years. In other words, it'll cost about a trillion over 10 years.
11:24 AM on 07/27/2009
Now that the Democrats are in charge, can't they bargain down the price of prescription drugs to something close to the prices paid by Canadians?
11:30 AM on 07/27/2009
Unless the US government changes intellectual property law and FDA regulations, there will be no medication cost savings.
11:33 AM on 07/27/2009
Nope, the blue dogs and Republicans are firmly in the grasp of PHARMA.
11:04 AM on 07/27/2009
The Republicans were all for this one even though we couldn't afford it and were in two wars.

With a 10-year price tag of $1.6 trillion, Bush's proposed tax cut for the rich was a great idea for the top 1% (the same people who hate America and Health care reform).
10:58 AM on 07/27/2009
Of course, you never saw anyone caring about $1 trillion when Bush cut $1.35 trillion out of government revenues then went out and borrowed that shortfall from the Chinese....

* Under Chairman Archer's proposal, the estate tax would be reduced gradually over the next decade, leading to full repeal in calendar year 2010. Under current law, CBO projects the estate tax will bring in $48 billion a year by 2010.

* In the 10 years between 2011 and 2020, the estate tax likely would bring in at least $620 billion under current law. The Archer proposal includes a provision, relating to the valuation of capital assets when a person dies, that would offset a small portion of the revenue loss from repeal of the estate tax. The offsetting revenue gain is likely to be in the range of $5 billion to $10 billion a year.

The net effect of the Archer proposal when fully phased in thus would be a revenue loss likely exceeding half a trillion dollars over 10 years.
