NEW YORK — HBO scored highest among 15 networks for its representation of gay characters last season, according to a report released Monday.

In its third annual Network Responsibility Index, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation found that of HBO's 14 original prime-time series, 10 included content reflecting the lives of gay, bisexual and transgender people. That totaled 42 percent of the network's programming hours, in series such as "True Blood," "Entourage" and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency."

By contrast, on NBC and CBS only 8 percent and 5 percent, respectively, of prime-time hours included them, the report said.

For the report, GLAAD reviewed all prime-time programming – totaling 4,901 hours – for inclusion of such characters or issues on the five major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW) from June 1, 2008, to May 31, 2009. The study also examined all original prime-time programming – 1,213 hours – on 10 prominent cable networks. The programming included dramas, comedies, unscripted fare and newsmagazines.

Cable's Showtime ranked second, with 26 percent of its programming hours featuring gay characters or themes. Series included "The L Word," "Weeds" and "The United States of Tara," a new comedy about a family whose teenage son is gay.

ABC got the highest ranking of the five broadcast networks, with 24 percent. It was the second year in a row that ABC led the broadcasters.

Among ABC series, the report cited newlyweds Kevin and Scotty on "Brothers & Sisters," the engagement of Andrew to Dr. Alex Cominis on "Desperate Housewives" and bisexual Dr. Callie Torres on "Grey's Anatomy."

The CW logged 20 percent, and the Fox network 11 percent, the report said.

Among the sampling of cable networks evaluated, TNT showed the largest growth, jumping to 19 percent last season from 1 percent the year before. This was largely thanks to its new drama series, "Raising the Bar," which features gay law clerk Charlie Sagansky as a regular character, GLAAD said.

"Television shows that weave our stories into the fabric of the series present richer, more diverse representations," said Rashad Robinson, GLAAD's senior director of media programs.

In September, GLAAD will release its annual report evaluating gay, bisexual and transgender inclusion, and other diversity, among scripted characters scheduled to appear during the 2009-10 season. Monday's report said TV characters in general are predominantly white, regardless of sexual orientation.

Perhaps the numbers are skewed by all the lesbian soft-core porn on HBO!

What about CNN? Anderson Cooper is on three hours a night compared to Racher Maddow's one.

The Lloyd character on Entourage is what GLAAD is proud of? Wow, and sad.

Who cares what GLAAD has to say? I am gay and I think they are idiots.

""Television shows that weave our stories into the fabric of the series present richer, more diverse representations," said Rashad Robinson"

... Our stories. You'll know when real progress occurs when no distinction is made whatsoever. GLAAD's problem is much like PETA's ... they can't see the forest for the trees.

I'm sure it would still be of note if media portrayals skipped a bunch of steps in the meantime. Not that there's any need to linger, but here we are.

PETA sees quite well.

"PETA sees quite well."

You think so? I think they are completely counterproductive to their stated mission, and do more to turn people off to their cause than they do to recruit them.

Yet another indication that the gay "movement" (if one exists) settles for empty symbolism when it comes to true advances in any arena. I'm supposed to feel liberated and thankful because some focus group somewhere decides to put a gay character in a sitcom so Aunt Suzie in Iowa feels "safer" around her gay nephew at Thanksgiving? Not when gay teens and professionals are still closeted in the face of such stereotyped images and so-called pride rallies. Good grief, at least people like Larry Kramer have the cojones to call out useless "improvements' like this.

I remember when Ellen 'came out' on TV and my dad was just totally shocked and surprised. Now, both in real life and in fiction, gay people and characters are just no big deal on TV. I think we've taken a real step forward though, in showing gay characters who are just people and not always the funny gay stereotype. It shows that there are just a whole lot of different kinds of people out there and if americans can be used to seeing them everyday on their TV shows, hopefully that is a step towards being able to see them everyday in Real Life and realize that it is just OK and no big deal.

NBC's Will & Grace's - Jack McFarland still holds the #1 spot for "Best Gay Character" in my book.

Still going through withdrawal . . . .

If you really want to see how "gay" TV is, just tune to the daytime soaps. You have Luke & Noah on "As the World Turns," you have the ambigiously lesbian love story between Olivia and Natalia and a closeted lesbian mayor (Doris Wolfe) on the soon to be axed "Guiding Light," you have Adam hitting the sheets with Rafe and Phillip faking his death for twenty years because he was embarrassed to admit he's gay on "The Young and the Restless," and on "One Life to Live," you have Kyle having a tryst with a man. And that's on top of Bianca's lesbian wedding on "All My Children."

And while homosexuality might be a new phenomenon on daytime, passionate love affairs most certainly are not.

Just for American Idol alone, Fox puts more gay people on TV than any other network.

CBS: 5 percent
NBC: 8 percent
Fox: 11 percent

Fox got a higher rating? Who'da thunk it? I guess, anyone who watches these three networks (Republicans).

Fox News and the shows it puts on the rest of the time aren't exactly in line ideologically.

I doubt their news desk is full of 'Simpsons' fans. :) (Actually, that show rather made a point that the rest of its airtime seems a bit inconsistent with the puritanical craziness its news organization puts out.
