UPDATE:

Henry Waxman made Blue Dog Democrats an offer that could lead to an agreement on health care legislation after a three-hour meeting on Monday night, reports The Hill.

Reps. Waxman (D-Calif.) and Mike Ross (D-Ark.) emerged from more than three hours of negotiations late Monday to say that the Blue Dogs were weighing an offer from Waxman. Blue Dogs have asked Waxman to get a cost estimate for the bill.

"The chairman has made an offer," said Ross, who is the lead Blue Dog on healthcare reform. "We have asked that he get a [Congressional Budget Office] score, that is, find out how much it would cost. We're going to review it and see if it's something we can accept."

***************************************************
A scan of the congressional bulletin board on Monday finds business much as usual in the Capitol: A pen and pad briefing with Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) at 3:30; Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic leaders holding a news conference about health care reform at 3:45; and a closed Democratic caucus meeting at 4.

Until 9.

There's no typo on the bulletin board. House Democrats plan to huddle behind closed doors to go over health care reform legislation section by section Monday afternoon and evening. A closed door, of course, doesn't mean that much on Capitol Hill, where members of Congress BlackBerry minute-to-minute updates to reporters in the hall outside.

Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, explained in a statement: "This in-depth look at the bill is another step in our efforts to keep our members informed and educated on this important topic. Democrats in the House have already held 10 Caucus meetings on health care, 79 hearings on health care reform, 550 town hall events in their districts about health care, and three House Committees have heard 45 hours of debate and amendments on our health care reform legislation. The American people have been waiting 75 years for us to get this done."

Pelosi is racing to complete the reform legislation before the House goes into recess until September, while conservative Democrats work just as hard to slow the process down. Friday saw a day of rancorous intraparty debate that descended into accusations of unfaithful negotiating before a truce was announced in the evening.

Story continues below

At her news conference before the caucus, Pelosi retreated further from her earlier pledge to pass health care reform before Congress leaves for its month-long vacation.

"I have said that I wanted a bill to pass before we left for the August recess," Pelosi said, noting that President Obama had asked the legislature for such a commitment. "But I have also said that members need the time that they need to not only get this bill written, but to have plenty of time to review it. And I have also said that we're going to see the direction the Senate is going."

At the moment, the only place senators are going is back to their home districts -- which may explain why Pelosi is no longer in such a rush. When negotiations between House Energy and Commerce Committee chair Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and the conservative Blue Dog Democrats, some Democrats floated the idea of bypassing the committee and going directly to a full House vote.

But with the Senate Finance Committee dragging its heels, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday ruled out any Senate bill before September. With the pressure off in the House, the Energy and Commerce Committee resumed negotiations this week, with Pelosi's new goal to get "a ways down the road" when Congress returns in September.

"So we're on schedule. We're good to do it now, or to do it whenever. But a lot depends on when the Energy and Commerce Committee finishes its work, and then we can make a decision about when we will take that vote," she said Monday. "The cost of doing nothing is huge in every respect, and that is not what we intend to do."

Absolutely none of these deals that are not single-payer as put forth in some version by Dennis Kucinich or Bernie Sanders will help any of us regular people , Dems, Independents or Repubs in any way at all.

Single-payer, the way they do it it in other civilized countries, is the only way to get Health Care to all who need it.

Lobby, write, call, persuade.

And also mention the only fair thing to deal with congress and all elected officials and support people who have the Health Care we regular tax payers give them, must be stripped until the same option is available to us all.

That is what I will not only march in the streets for but also continue to write all my official officials about.

STRIP CONGRESS, THE SENATE and all ELECTED OFFICIALS OF THEIR HEALTH CARE DEAL THAT WE PAY FOR UNTIL WE GET THE SAME ONE.

Praise any one of them that stepws up to the plate on this. (I have not heard of any yet).

If--god forbid--health care reform goes down in flames, I hope people remember one thing.
The Republican party could have gotten behind this thing and helped make it happen.
But they deliberately chose not to.
NOT ONE of them would break partisan ranks to help the American people.
Remember that on election day.

This may provide the opening for some new political parties, there should be more than 3, and the system should be changed to accommodate that reality.

I'm saying if you've been voting Republican and you don't have health insurance, think about that. You got what you voted for. So when the next election comes around, remember what that Repub vote got you...nada. At least the majority of Dems are giving reform some real effort.

Why should the Republicans help Dems meet their own campaign promises?
That makes no sense at all. Republicans aren't the ones who have campaigned for decades on 'universal health care' etc. Democrats are the ones not representing their voters.

Why can't Democrats meet their own campaign promises now that they have the majority in both houses and the presidency?

If any Republican campaigned on 'universal health care' then, yes, they should vote with the Democrats on this issue. Otherwise, it would make no logical sense for them to vote on something they don't believe in and they did not campaign on.

Thank you, thank you! I never understood why the dems expected the OPPOSING party to support their objectives! And I am amazed that dems are shocked and suprised at this idea. They seem to have forgotten what an opposing party is. Calling them the party of no is hilarious to me. Are the dems considered the party of no when they vote against repub legislation?

Republicans have the upper hand in all this health care business. They know that they can smear those Democrats in districts that are heavily Republican (with the help of some insurance companies)and they can take those seats in the 2010 elections. It is the American people who need to make it known loud and clear, that we are going to stand with the Democratic party if they pass health care. We need to support them in their districts and defend them against the lobbyists and the Republicans. We the people have work to do as well, so let your congress person's know that you will work with them to get them re-elected even when they face the destructive Republican machine.

Sen. Ted Kennedy: "Americans spoke loud and clear..They understood his (Obama's) vision of a fairer and more just America and embraced it ..They believed that change is possible and voted to be part of America's future.."

Virginia carried the president to victory; a state that hasn't elected a democratic president since 1964.
Just this weekend, Virginia revealed agonizing realities of their poverty and suffering evidenced in thousands of Americans participating in a health care clinic because they have no coverage.

While thousands waited in line to receive humane treatment leaving the state looking like a third world country, congress sat on billions they've collectively amassed from health and insurance industries, pharmaceuticals and big money greasing congress to legislate lucrative profits that violate the public's interests.

Lobbying and Influence purchased by industries in 2008 giving millions to congress:

$46,635,720 – Insurance

$166,600,125 Health

TOP INDUSTRIES GIVING $$$ AND RECIPIENTS OF $$$ TO CONGRESS IN 2008:

http://www.opensecrets.org/industries/mems.php?party=A&cycle=2008

There is no room for silence from this president regarding what he expects from congress on health car, who should pay for it, and what kind of legislation is fair and just, particularly after we've given BILLIONS to INSURANCE AND BANKING INDUSTRIES.

There is no conscionable excuse congress can come up with in failing to do their duty to honor and uphold the PEOPLE's INTERESTS and their trust.,
Congress must legislate justly, fairly and expediently.
Virginia weeps for change they can believe in.

All those many millions the insurance industry spends buying influence in Congress? Just think! That's OUR money. OUR insurance premiums are being spent that way. NOT on health care. Our own money is being used to influence people to vote AGAINST our welfare! Ironic is hardly the word for it.

I am thoroughly disgusted with how the Democrats refuse to stand up to the Republicans as well as those in their party who are being bought off by the insurance companies and other entities in the health care industry. I just saw where a new poll shows 72% of Americans want a public option. That's all the Democrats need. No CBO report to knock down their public option legislation. The CBO cannot possibly know how much will be saved by going with a public option. What needs to happen is a public option put in place and then go from there once you can actually see where the biggest expenses are. Adjustments can be made as time goes on.

The only reason HealthCare is even difficult to pass is because we had a crook, Richard Nixon, set the healthcare industry as a for-profit industry when the rest of the world didn't. Now there are so many intterest in keeping it a for-profit industry. It's ridicolous we even went down this path in the first place and at the hands of the only President to resign the office. Richard Nixon and George W Bush are the same in my book.

I make cr@p compared to these lawmaker, I work for myself making tables and beds, and fork out 680 bucks a month for health care, with a 2500 dollar deductible (age 35 great health). Over the last ten years I have paid 80,000 dollars to anthem blue cross and paid also over 1500 a year for things like stitches and doctor appts w/ out ever reaching my deductible. Yet these insurance companies can pay millions per day to prevent the government from creating a better option for me? I could sure use a couple extra hundred dollars a month. It would be a huge deal to have a better option for me. I could afford luxuries like shoes w/ out the nails sticking into my foot on the bottom.
THE WHOLE LOBBY SYSTEM NEEDS TO GO. It is corrupt and wrong for these huge corporations to influence the lawmakers in this way using money I paid them, they basically buy people to block legislation that would make competition for them. How on earth is this legal.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO TRANSPARENCY?

THIS IS NOT WHAT I VOTED FOR
HOW EXACTLY DOES ONE BECOME CANADIAN? I AM SO READY.

I have been having a discussion of the German system (I live here) on Facebook. If ever I have a deductable, it's 21 euros a day for in-hospital stay. And that for a max of 14 days a year. After that, even this fee disappears. We who earn less than 70,000 pay half of 14% of income for full coverage, no precondition health care. Mandated by the law. Prescriptions come in 3 levels. 1 - I pay around 3 euros, 2 around 5 and even for the most expensive medications (level 3) my cost is 7.50 euros. Not per pill, per package.

I like the idea of an independent panel of experts, but it should consist of those in countries that HAVE good health care systems advising the US. And the US should commit to their reccomendations. It means a drastic overhaul of how the nation thinks. (I already hear folks saying "We don't want foreigners telling us how to...")

If you want a system that works, ask someone who already has one.

I am also from Germany in Munich and I fully agreed with you.

We also have a private insurance. But they have to offer the same as public. So everyone have same care.

If some want to be in a single room fine he can get that and be more relax an so on but the care is the same for all.

In Germany it is the best and it is cheap even if you add what the Gov pay on top.

The US may not just want to coyp it but they can learn from it.

My husband seriously injured his back - he couldn't even stand up without considerable pain. When I called his doctor to make an appointment to have his back looked at, the office person said, "We won't deal with workman's comp, if he comes here, you'll have to pay out of pocket." When I pointed out that I didn't say he had injured himself at work, she said that it didn't matter, his health insurance, Guardian, refuses all back injury claims and that their office will not deal with workman's comp, so don't bother to make an appointment with them. Then the owner of his company spent most of the morning arranging for a workman's comp claim just so he could see a doctor. When a small business owner has to spend an entire morning to deal with one worker just to get him in to see a doctor, this country may as well revert back to a feudal system - it would be more efficient than what we have now.

He IS a good guy; and he relies on my husband to keep the business going. He and my husband pay over $500 a month(just for my husband alone) for this crappy Guardian coverage (no Rx, vision, dental, $5000 deductibe, 70/30 coverage) because the business is too small to have any buying power. And now they won't even cover non-work related claims. As an experiment, I started to read through (it took two weeks), in detail what exactly they will not cover - many standard chemotherapy drugs, only 50% after deductible of anesthesia, only 50% of second mastectomy... I had to stop because it was too depressing.

I just don't understand why the business community isn't up in arms over this whole issue - it makes them so unable to compete globally.
