LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson's personal doctor administered a powerful anesthetic to help him sleep, and authorities believe the drug killed the pop singer, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, also provided a glimpse inside Jackson's rented mansion, describing the room Jackson slept in as outfitted with oxygen tanks and an IV drip. Another of his bedrooms was a shambles, with clothes and other items strewn about and handwritten notes stuck on the walls. One read: "children are sweet and innocent."

The official said Jackson regularly received propofol to sleep, relying on the drug like an alarm clock. A doctor would administer it when he went to sleep, then stop the intravenous drip when he wanted to wake up. On June 25, the day Jackson died, Dr. Conrad Murray gave him the drug through an IV sometime after midnight, the official said.

Though toxicology reports are pending, investigators are working under the theory propofol caused Jackson's heart to stop, the official said. Jackson is believed to have been using the drug for about two years and investigators are trying to determine how many other doctors administered it, the official said.

Murray, 51, has been identified in court papers as the subject of a manslaughter investigation and authorities last week raided his office and a storage unit in Houston. Police say Murray is cooperating and have not labeled him a suspect.

Using propofol to sleep is a practice far outside the drug's intended purpose. One doctor said administering it in a home to help a person sleep would constitute malpractice.

Murray's lawyer, Edward Chernoff, has said the doctor "didn't prescribe or administer anything that should have killed Michael Jackson." When asked Monday about the law enforcement official's statements he said: "We will not be commenting on rumors, innuendo or unnamed sources."

In a more detailed statement posted online late Monday, Chernoff added that "things tend to shake out when all the facts are made known, and I'm sure that will happen here as well."

Story continues below

Murray became Jackson's personal physician in May and was to accompany him to London for a series of concerts starting in July.

He was staying with Jackson in the Los Angeles mansion and, according to Chernoff, "happened to find" an unconscious Jackson in the pop star's bedroom the morning of June 25. Murray tried to revive him by compressing his chest with one hand while supporting Jackson's back with the other.

It's unclear how long it took for someone at Jackson's home to summon paramedics, though Murray's own lawyers have said it was up to a half-hour. Paramedics arrived about three minutes after they were called and tried to revive the music superstar for another 42 minutes before sliding him into the ambulance and racing with lights flashing and siren blaring to UCLA Medical Center, where Jackson was pronounced dead.

Authorities arrived at the singer's house after the death and found a chaotic scene. The top floor had been all but sealed off, with only Jackson, his children and Murray allowed upstairs, the official said. Jackson's bedroom was a mess, with items seemingly thrown about and some 20 handwritten notes stuck on the walls.

A porcelain girl doll wearing a dress was found on top of the covers of the bed where he slept, the official said.

The temperature upstairs was stiflingly hot, with gas fireplaces and the heating system on high because Jackson always complained of feeling cold, the official said.

Police found propofol and other drugs in the home. An IV line and three tanks of oxygen were in the room where Jackson slept and 15 more oxygen tanks were in a security guard's shack, the official said.

Propofol can depress breathing and lower heart rates and blood pressure. Because of the risks, propofol is only supposed to be administered in medical settings by trained personnel. Instructions on the drug's package warn that patients must be continuously monitored, and that equipment to maintain breathing, to provide artificial ventilation, and to administer oxygen if needed "must be immediately available."

Dr. Zeev Kain, who heads the anesthesiology department at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, said he has never encountered a situation where propofol was given in a home to help someone sleep. Such a situation would constitute malpractice, he said.

Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse who gave Jackson nutritional counseling and vitamins earlier this year, said he complained of insomnia and asked her repeatedly for Diprivan, the brand-name version of propofol. Lee said she warned him of the drug's dangers and rejected his requests.

Los Angeles police interviewed Murray twice soon after Jackson's death. Last week, detectives flew to Houston and, along with federal drug agents, searched a medical clinic he ran and a storage unit he rented. They seized a long list of items, including the contents of three computer hard drives, two e-mails from his administrative assistant at the Las Vegas practice Murray ran and various other documents.

A sealed search warrant approved by a Houston judge and later made public allowed authorities to seek "property or items constituting evidence of the offense of manslaughter that tend to show that Dr. Conrad Murray committed the said criminal offense."

Dr. Murray's (Storage) Employees Tell Different Stories
http://www.tmz.com/2009/07/29/Michael-jackson-died-storage-unit-facility-dr-conrad-murray-laquisha-laquanda/

LaQuisha Middleton and her sister, LaQuanda Price, both of whom worked for Dr. Murray at the time.

The manager of the storage facility tells us the two sisters came to Dr. Murray's unit at 9:22 AM Los Angeles time the day Jackson died and picked up 3 - 5 boxes, in addition to other items they carried out by hand. The manager says she personally spoke with both sisters at the facility.

LaQuanda told us she stayed in the office the day Jackson died and did not go to the storage facility. She says her sister went and retrieved one bio-hazardous box -- filled with used needles. She says Dr. Murray did not call and direct either of them to go to the storage facility.

LaQuisha says the only thing she picked up was a chair.
She also says Dr. Murray did not direct her to go to the facility.

This 'Dr.' is going down...His actions are truly questionable. Reports say he was doing CPR compressions with one hand & the other hand at the small of MJ's back while MJ WAS STILL IN BED. W.T.F.? Even I know better than that (with basic CPR knowledge). Not to mention he admitted to police to administering propofol in a home setting when it's ONLY to be used in hospital. Where's the butter? This Dr. is toast.

Plus the fact that he waited 20-30 minutes before calling 911 "because he didn't know the address". WTF??????????????

I was, am, will always be a fan of Michael Jackson, and I will wait to see what the Corner has to say about the cause of death. Prescription drug addiction did not start with Michael and it won't end with him. I know alot of the responsiblity lies with Michael, but I am so tried of these kind of doctors. This man was helping Michael with his addiction, and what kind of doctor would do that? That's like knowing a person is an alcoholic and you're giving them booze every night. I'm going to do my best not to try and convict Dr. Murray, without the facts. But I want to know what happen, nothing but the truth. I will miss you MJ.... R.I.P.

Unbelievable!! Stephen Hoefflin, who is speaking on behalf of the Jackson family to the british tabloids, states that an aide didn't pay the last couple of premiums on Michael's life insurance benefits....

It seems that the Jackson family doesnt want to speak to the U.S.media, because of they way the media has portrayed Michael.

Needless to say, the insurance policy was for more than $20 million and was payable to his children.
Its believed that the aide had stolen the premium money and stated that the insurance company had contacted the aide for payment..The aide advised the insurance company that they would pay the premiums, however, payment was not made...

The insurance policy will only pay out about $2.5 million at this time...

Michael Jackson was killed by a conspiracy of murderes.
Questions:
Who among the staff conspired with Dr. Conrad Murray?
Who calmly called 911 without mentioning Michael Jackson by name?
Who removed the surveillance tape from the home?
I don't trust the nurse going around saying: Michael "begged" for Propafol.
Michael Jackson was not a medical doctor or scholar.
I don't believe he ever knew the names of his medications.
Michael Jackson trusted his doctor, who, apparently, killed him.

One would think that his own personal physician could be trusted to keep him safe and help him get off the drugs. I'm sure Michael trusted Dr. Murray and felt safe. This story is getting sadder and sadder as the details come out.

Hoefflin is the plastic surgeon who messed up Michael Jackson's nose. He has had legal problems in the past regarding other issues.

I would think he would distance himself from MJ and not get involved in making comments.

The question we should be asking is:
“Who paid Dr. Death Conrad Murray to kill Michael Jackson?”
Answer: Always follow the money, and ask the question who has the
most to gain?
Answer:
The Candidates are:
The Sony Corporation,
AEG,
and Colony Capital.

Gonna have to add the nurse's name to the list as being very suspicious:

Nurse: Cherilyn Lee: She is much too helpful and knows to much about Propofol

Even if Dr Murray administered the drug at midnight, it is possible that his story of finding Jackson unconscious may be true. If Jackson was intent on having this drug, he could have injected himself in the morning.

{quote}That’s the drive to use this drug. It’s amazing,” said Paul Wischmeyer, MD, an anesthesiologist at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. “People who have abused propofol say it’s pretty much their first-choice drug every time.”

Because propofol is such a short-acting substance, heavy abusers must inject it frequently to stay high—as many as 50 to 100 times during a using session is not unheard of, he said.{unquote) http://www.farleycenter.com/resources/articles/2009-01-13/propofol-abuse-growing-problem-anesthesiologists

Propofol anesthesia increases dopamine and serotonin activities at the somatosensory cortex in rats: a microdialysis study

{quote}Because of its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic features (ultrashort action, potent respiratory depressant), propofol seems not to be the substance of choice for drug abuse. However, reports about sexual disinhibition, reports about pleasant and euphoric feelings during recovery from propofol anesthesia .....Three cases were reported of young men with some connection to a hospital, such as being employed as theater technicians, who were stopped by the police for dangerous driving and were found to be injecting themselves with propofol while driving. {unquote}

Thanks for the information. This increases the unknown factors. If Murray is charged with a crime, it may be years before we hear his defense in court and learn a more complete story. In some ways, it might be better if MJ did overdose because I can already see the tabloids drooling over a homocide charge for exactly the reason that it could drag out coverage for years.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:01 AM on 07/28/2009

To Nosillyname & octopi:

It was reported that there were IV drips in the room, no report on any being attached to Michael.
Propofol that was abused by anesthesiologists, was self-administered via hypodermic needles, not IV lines. That opens up a separate possible scenario.

However, one could conceivably attach themselves to a drip that automatically dispenses the drug, if there is already a prepared vein. (If the doctor administered the drug the prior evening, perhaps, and the needle attachment was already in a vein)

Not all the facts are in. This is not necessarily a cut and dry case. Although Murray will certainly lose his license.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:31 AM on 07/28/2009

Not possible if the drip was left in, MJ would have remained unconscious. The doctor was supposed to be monitoring MJ the whole time he was "sleeping"; he obviously did not.

Eerie. The Farley Center article says this:

'Talbott [Recovery Campus] has seen a growing number of propofol abusers over the last two years, Dr. Earley said. Almost all of them have been anesthesiologists; the majority appear to be women. Many have admitted to a history of psychological or physical trauma, such as rape or childhood sexual abuse—which may help explain the drug’s appeal, Dr. Earley said. "What it’s best at is why it’s used in anesthesia—making people unconscious. It’s somewhat dissociative, and can lead to an out-of-body sensation." [Says Omar S. Manejwala, MD,] "Propofol is a drug that in a sense doesn’t get you high...It blocks out the world."'

Duh?!!! Who would've thunk that?? LOL, anyone keeping up with this story has already reached that conclusion.

Dr. Murray should not go to prison alone--all the other docs who prescribed errant prescriptions are just as bad and that includes any surgeons and the good old inseminator, Dr. Klein!!! If a doctor would provide his own sperm for someone to have kids good lawd knows what else he would do for you.

Yes, Iam a Michael Jackson fan and will continue to be so. This still doesn't change the fact that when administering Propafol/Deprivan a person has to be monitered. Dr. Murray said that he found Michael Jackson. What was he doing; twidelling his fingers?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 07/28/2009

MJ was already dead in that room. There's no doubt in my mind about that. MJ probably died in his sleep during the night and when Murray checked on him, he was already gone!!! MJ paid for whatever he wanted in life, no matter the cost. However, this time it cost him his life.

Murray accidentally killed him with the drug and the evening drip.
Bad luck by Jackson and Murray and ergo we lost the King-o-pop.

Jackson was addict and his money and influence bought or rented Dr. Murray's services BUT Jackson was the "man" and his money was the key.

Martin Bashir and AEG shoud be charged. Martin Bashir did that hatchett special trying to tear Michael Jackson apart. AEG also knows Michael at 50 was not ready for 50 concerts combined in so short a period.

If MJ knew how to interview well he wouldn't have fallen in the trap questions set up by Bashir. The sleeping "with boys" comment is the nail that closed MJ's coffin after that.
