NEW YORK — Michael Vick is back in the NFL. Now all he needs is a team to play for. Vick, free after serving 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring, was reinstated with conditions by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday. He could participate in regular-season games as early as October.

Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games – if he can find a team that will sign him. A number of teams have already said they would not.

Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted bankrolling a dogfighting operation on his property in Virginia. At the time, Goodell said Vick must show remorse before he would consider reinstating him.

"I accept that you are sincere when you say that you want to, and will, turn your life around, and that you intend to be a positive role model for others," Goodell said in his letter to Vick. "I am prepared to offer you that opportunity. Whether you succeed is entirely in your hands."

"Needless to say, your margin for error is extremely limited," the letter said. "I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you and to dedicate yourself to rebuilding your life and your career. If you do this, the NFL will support you."

Goodell said he spoke to numerous current and former players and coaches as he weighed his decision and that the responses were "very mixed."

"I do recognize that some will never forgive him for what he did," Goodell said. "I hope that the public will have a chance to understand his position as I have."

Vick, once the highest-paid player in the league, said he was grateful for a second chance.

"I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to commissioner Goodell for allowing me to be readmitted to the National Football League," Vick said in a statement released by his agent, Joel Segal. "I fully understand that playing football in the NFL is a privilege, not a right, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity I have been given.

"As you can imagine, the last two years have given me time to re-evaluate my life, mature as an individual and fully understand the terrible mistakes I have made in the past and what type of life I must lead moving forward," he said.

The announcement came after a busy first week of freedom for Vick, who met with union leaders and Goodell on consecutive days last week. His 23-month federal sentence ended when an electronic monitor was removed from his ankle on July 20 at his home in Hampton, Va.

He met with DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, last Tuesday and, on Wednesday, with Goodell at a security firm in Allendale, N.J.

Goodell said Vick agreed to undergo psychiatric testing, which determined that he was capable of returning to the NFL but needed continuing counseling.

He said keeping Vick from playing at the start of the regular season wasn't a form of punishment, but a chance for the quarterback to gradually transition back into the league.

"I have thought about every alternative, but I think this gives him the best chance for success," Goodell said. "We are not looking for failure here. We are looking to see a young man succeed."

But Vick's issues are far from over and he needs a team to call his own. So far, the owners of the New York Giants, Jets and Dallas Cowboys have said they had no interest in the 29-year-old quarterback. Neither do the Falcons, who officially released Vick in June.

Vick filed for bankruptcy protection last July, listing assets of about $16 million and debts of more than $20 million, and has a hearing about his plan to repay his creditors on Friday in Newport News, Va. That plan is built around his ability to make NFL-type money again.

He's unlikely to command anything close to the 10-year, $130 million contract he once had with the Falcons, or to get endorsement deals after the grisly details of the dogfighting ring were publicized.

Vick pleaded guilty after his three co-defendants had already done so. They told of how Vick participated in the killing of dogs that didn't perform well in test fights by shooting, hanging, drowning or slamming them to the ground.

Vick's appearances at federal court in Richmond, Va., prompted large groups of protesters to gather outside. Many were with PETA and held signs depicting photographs of pit bulls ravaged in dogfights.

Still, there were supporters who wore his No. 7 jersey.

Vick has already taken steps to rebuild his image.

He met with the president of the Humane Society of the United States while serving his federal sentence at Leavenworth, Kan. He plans to work with HSUS in a program designed to steer inner city youth away from dogfighting. He was not permitted to work with the program while in custody.

Ed Sayres, president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the organization hopes Vick "rises to the occasion and proves worthy of the rare second chance Commissioner Goodell has granted him."

"Opportunities for redemption are rare – but that is exactly the opportunity that awaits Mr. Vick," he said. ___

I hope he signs with the Denver Broncos. We need a quarterback.

And Vick has paid his debt to society.

Huge mistake. As usual in business, money dictates all decisions. For those of you who feel that Vick should be permanently banded from the NFL, I would suggest that you boycott the games he play and, better yet, contact the sponsors to voice your outrage. Below is the text of what I sent the NFL commissioner, not that it will do much good....

To the NFL Commissioner:

I'm very strongly against the re-enstatement of Michael Vick to the NFL. In my opinion, his dispictable actions are grounds for permanent expulsion. I hope the NFL realizes that to many fans, there are issues more important and higher priority than throwing a football. I hope the NFL has the courage to do the right thing.

No, it won't do much good because you're bitter and jealous Vick will be making more money than you. There are people who've taken lives that are still playing in the NFL. BTW, did you write federal prosecutors any letters for the multi-state dogfighting ring they just busted?

Of course not.

And I'll ask you the same question....

Why are you not calling for the expulsion of Donte Stallworth, who did something far more heinous?

In case you didn't notice, this article is specifically about Michael Vick. But to address your question: anyone who commits cruel acts, such as Vick, should be given their walking papers. Period.

How many of us who are reading this would be given a second chance by our employers after serving jail time for a felony? None - that's how many. Convicted Felons don't get to have real careers, they threw that all away. Why should it be different for the rich and famous. I am so sick of the double standards for athletes.

How proud his parents must be; working 2 and 3 jobs to support him and his 3 siblings to get them out of the RCH projects. You can't take the projects out of the THUG! Apparently, he should do more fishing rather than enlist in dog fighting;oh but there's no cash in that.
------------------------
Clearly you know nothing of his parents or his upbringing. Your opinion clearly must be based on your experiences in life. I am going to go out on a limb and say you knew no one who fought dogs. Well imagine knowing hardly anyone who thought it is bad.

He created a heinous crime whether you see that or not. Your violent tone is more dumb than macho. And it is why violent crimes and threats are prohibited in a civilized society.
---------------

Look he did not create this crime. There is no shame among young black males in inner cities who fight dogs. Dont put this all on him. If you are really interested in stopping dogfighting you actually have to go in the neighborhoods you are too scared to go into.

Oh so now ONLY inner city black males engage in dogfighting? Please educate yourself on the issue before you slander a whole group of people because you're unable to disassociate other black males from Vick. Are you scared to go into the Mississippi and Texas backwoods? Because I'm sure you'd find more of this there than the inner cities.

There is no justification, other than the fact that Vick is a coward and a sadist, for the crimes he committed against animals. He had it all; a fabulous career, numerous homes, cash, women; so there was no reason, other than the fact, that he simply enjoyed causing pain to creatures who were unable to defend themselves. According to all indicators, he is a perfect candidate for someone who will (if he hasn't already) abuse women, children, and anyone else he perceives as weaker than him. In truth, he is a weak, pathetic "man"; who is not an appropriate role model for children, aspiring athletes, or anyone who aspires to simply become a human being. There are many other pathetic men just like him, who deserve at least what he got, but they aren't public personalities earning millions of dollars.

Or maybe Vick was raised to believe that dogs are not different than cows or pigs or sheep or chickens, which we humans slaughter for our own needs all the time.

Or maybe Vick was raised to believe that dogs are not different than deer or bulls, which we humans slaugter for sport all the time.

Are people who work on farms sadists? Or do they just prioritize animal life different than you?

He'd still be considered a sociopath if he'd put two deer in a ring in order to enjoy the sight of them tearing each other apart to the death. And he'd still be a criminal subhuman piece of trash if he slammed them to the ground and electocuted them once he was done enjoying the brutality.

OR maybe he's a sociopath with no regard for anything but himself. Seriously, stop making excuses for abhorrent behavior just because you like sports more than you care about the life of another. People like you are the reason I abhor all 4 "major" american sports. You'd never see a professional surfer with a dog fighting ring.

Wonderful question; which I'm sure you can answer for yourself. If an animal, child, woman, prisoner of war, etc., is being treated inhumanely, is having their head slammed onto concrete, being strangled, stabbed, burned, electrocuted, tortured, dismembered, confined in a tiny space, killed; is that sadism, or just a "different point of view"?

If you think animal life is as important as human life, fine.

Donte Stallworth. Google him.

He just killed a man this summer. He did 30 days in jail. Vick did almost 2 years.

30 days for killing a human being.

He wants to get back into the NFL....WHY are NONE of you concerned about Donte Stallworth?

I'm completely against animal cruelty but I can't understand some of these delusional people. Animal life is not equal to human life....period! If that was the case, Michael Vick would be in jail for the rest of his life. Instead, he has been properly punished and released to continue on with his life. Why can't these people understand that the man has served his time and paid his debt to society?

Dante Stallworth killed a man while driving drunk. WHERE IS THE HUGE UPROAR IN THAT CASE?

Excuse me.

Stallworth was drunk and got behind the wheel of a car. He killed a man because of that DELIBERATE recklessness.

The only difference is one killed a HUMAN BEING and the other killed animals, which are less important.

properly punished is an open question. do you accept the justice system's ideas of proper justice and agree that the sentences handed out fits the crimes and produce at the end of time served citizens ready to resume their place in society? i mean if you do that puts you in the position of having to accept that the biased sentencing in drug crimes is fair and proper and that the death sentences are properly applied to everyone, that clearly isn't the case. if time served produced productive citizens recidivism wouldn't be so high.

people who love dogs see it differently. sadly, dui isn't taken as seriously as it should be, but that is just a red herring thrown into the discussion to distract.

TELL THAT TO SOMEONE WHO HAS LOST LOVED ONES......HUMAN LOVED ONES....TO A DUI DRIVER.

You people care more about animals more than humans, fine, that is your right.

But to compare the loss of human life to DUI as LESS IMPORTANT than the loss of animal life is just VILE.

Vick purposely commited and funded acts of cruelty for the mere sake of "entertainment" (and gambling; ANOTHER crime) for years and would have continued to do so had he not been caught.

How does that compare to an accident that one has while making the foolish mistake of drunk driving?

It doesn't.

One, while cruel, ends animal life, which humans do all the time.

The other takes a human life.

There is NO comparison.

Animal life is not as important as human life. If it was dogs wouldn't be killed in shelters (such as PETA's)....we don't KILL orphans, right? Also, it's ok to put a sick dog, but not a sick human to sleep.

In regards to this post.....The heart of this issue: The iconic status of athletes in these times is absurd. I am a nurse in Ohio; I would lose my nursing license to EVER be able to practice nursing in the U.S. The U.S. is based on greed alone. What a perfect example this is before us now. Michael Vick is 'sincerely' distraught because he lost his lavish lifestyle. He wants back in for the cash and fame. How proud his parents must be; working 2 and 3 jobs to support him and his 3 siblings to get them out of the RCH projects. You can't take the projects out of the THUG! Apparently, he should do more fishing rather than enlist in dog fighting;oh but there's no cash in that. I am disgusted that any NFL coach would take him on--it will be nothing but a distraction to the game..Football, baseball, basketball, racing, boxing, cycling: it's all about the cash; no more is there regard on the part of the Coaches or Commissioners for integrity for one who is idolized by the youth. 'A felony ?...Come back after you served your time'. OJ still walkin'. Pete Rose getting his 'HoF'. NO ONE ELSE in America would ever be able to reestablish their livelihood. I can no longer support the politics that play into sports: Pro's down to the Little Leagues/Pee Wee's in my own town. America and apple pie? Better eat Crow.

The iconic status of celebrities in every arena is absurd; simply illusions that are perpetrated to make big bucks. But I think that the gap between the illusion, i.e. as in Michael Jackson's case, and reality, is beginning to close. I abhor what Michael Vick did, which for me, is not separate from who he is. Being at the head of an organization, which systematically strangles, tortures, and electrocutes animals, is no "mistake"; it is a mindset, and this mindset unfortunately, though extreme, exists in every facet of American culture. The events at Abu Ghraib, at Guantanamo, the mass murders by school children of their classmates and teachers, babies in dumpster, in toilets, Ringling Bros. beating of elephants with metal hooks, and on-and-on, are all a reflection of the increasing violence in this country. Michael Vick is essentially a serial killer of animals; no different for me anyway, than an abuser of women, or children, or any being who cannot defend themselves. But, inspite of this, because of his athletic ability, and the money he can potentially earn for franchise owners, he will be allowed to return to his job. I wonder how comfortable these guys would be, if he was going to marry their daughter?
