UPDATE 2/3/10: According to the Washington Post, this lawsuit has been dismissed.

By Don Babwin, Associated Press:

CHICAGO -- Members of the country's oldest black sorority are suing to remove their president, alleging that she spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of the group's money on herself - some of it to pay for a wax statue in her own likeness.

In the suit filed in Washington, D.C., the Alpha Kappa Alpha members also alleged that international President Barbara McKinzie bought designer clothing, jewelry and lingerie with the sorority credit card. She then redeemed points the purchases earned on the card to buy a big-screen television and gym equipment, the lawsuit said.

"This is extraordinarily shocking if not illegal conduct," Edward W. Gray Jr., an attorney representing the plaintiffs suing the Chicago-based sorority, said Wednesday.

McKinzie denied what she called the lawsuit's "malicious allegations," saying they were "based on mischaracterizations and fabrications ... not befitting our ideals of sisterhood, ethics and service," according to a statement issued this week by the sorority.

The lawsuit also accused the sorority's board of directors of signing off on spending funds on McKinzie without the required approval by the group's membership. For example, the lawsuit says the board approved a monthly "pension stipend" of $4,000 for four years after she leaves office and purchased a $1 million life insurance policy for her. The suit demands McKinzie be fired and return money to the sorority.

In the sorority statement, McKinzie took particular offense to the accusation that she commissioned a life-sized wax figure of herself that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. She said the sorority's board approved the money to "help defray overall expenses for our 2010 convention."

She said a total of $45,000 was spent on a wax figure of her and the sorority's first international president, the late Nellie Quander. McKinzie also said the expenses were "consistent with furthering AKA's mission" and did not violate any of the group's bylaws.

The lawsuit says $900,000 was spent on the McKinzie wax statue, but Gray said he has since learned the amount was for the two statues. The statues reportedly are to be displayed in the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, Md., he said.

The lawsuit is a rare sign of discord within in the century-old sorority that boasts a worldwide membership of 250,000 women, including prominent black businesswomen and such luminaries as author Toni Morrison.

Within the 38-page lawsuit filed last month, the sorority, which Gray called "one of the crown jewels of our community," is portrayed as a troubled organization rife with financial improprieties.

For example, the lawsuit alleges that McKinzie and Betty James, the executive director who is also named as a defendant, oversaw the preparation of the organization's tax return's that include many "unreasonable large and inappropriate" deductions.

McKinzie also invested millions of dollars of the sorority's money in stocks and bonds – investments that have since lost huge amounts of money, according to the lawsuit.

But the president said that under her leadership, the organization has erased "past IRS liabilities and cost overruns" and said auditing practices have improved.

The head of a presigious organization such as AKA should be less self serving. What if she had used the money for a program for homeless children, displaced homeowners, food for the places that shelter the homeless. Certainly it would have given her sorority a better image. ........From Nellie Quander to Barbara "Squander"!!! If this squandering of AKA funds is a fact, they have every right to sue her. Though AKA was never my choice for membership, her actions make it bad for any BGLO sorority.

Women of AKA...stand up for what is correct....If she used your funds illegally, REMOVE her quickly so that you can be about the business of community service as a BGLO.

Ooo-oo-oop!

fact of the matter is that this organization is an exceptional institution and has been since 1908. This should have been handled internally by the organization. Their legacy still shouldn't be tarnished per the inspirational book Ivy an unauthorized history of Alpha Kappa Alpha at http://www.collegegreekbooks.com/twentypearls.html . See why this is only a minor stumbling block within the organization long road of success and successful leadership.

I don't know what's worse, the allegations of this story or the people commenting without having any of the confirmed facts. I don't know, maybe I just assumed that in America, you are innocent until proven guilty. This just sounds like a bunch of in fighting to me, which is unlike anything I have ever witnessed since I came into memebership in 1997. For the AKAs who are entertaining an opinion about this woman publically; I am most disappointed in you. The airing of dirty laundry is unnecessary, we should be able to deal with this at "home". For the other members of the Pan - Hellenic Council who want to use this moment as a marketing opportuity for why people should join your organization, don't be so quick to jump on that bandwagon either. We have all faced lawsuits and malignent reports and we will continue to face these things. The existence of BGLOs has been hanging in the balance for the past 10 years; but to aid in the downfall of another BGLO by publically slandering or finding joy in each others woes will be our downfall. Trust me when I say that you too will one day have to defend your organization to the throngs of people who call us elitist, dangerous, corrupt, and or snooty. Be mature enough to see that when one of us is under fire, we are all under fire.

I'm not surprised she's an AKA. BWAAHAHAHAH!

Barbara McKinzie needs to be punished severely to the fullest extent of the law and held accountable to pay restitution to AKA if convicted of embezzlement charges. Unfortunately, I see she has not learned her own lessons from the past very well and cheated AKA again. She did this same act of embezzlement with AKA years ago in 1986 when she served as Executive Director under former Supreme Basileus Janet J. Ballard. As a board member, Ms McKinzie had obviously misappropriated over $4,000 with a AKA credit card back then and was pressured by Janet Ballard to resign to save her image with AKA -- the money was never paid back at all. A mere slap on the hand by AKA I see was not good enough and I'm sure Mrs. Ballard is "ROMFLOL" in her grave. May Janet Jones Ballard rest in peace after her tumultous experiences with AKA and the vicious murder of her sister Holly during her reign as Supreme Basileus. I was living with Janet Ballard during the muder trials for her sister Holly and niece, and it was then that I became even more acquainted with the events surrounding Ms. McKinzie's drug usage and forced resignation. For AKA's sake, I hope Ms. McKinzie is removed from office very soon (forced to resigne or impeached) because she is EXTREMELY dangerous and should not have ever been elected President nor allowed to serve as anything else with AKA after being forced to resign in that previous money

Typo: sport should read sort. However, Wanda Sykes & other comics, of all races, will make it sport when they speak of the ladies of AKA. Vain people often are objjects of scorn & ridicule.
01:49 PM on 08/02/2009
Yes, what would Wanda Sykes say about the sorority that she is a member of?
11:13 PM on 08/01/2009
I wonder how Jet will cover this dispute. Ebony can be most dignified when covering disputes of this sport. If the comics on BET mention this dispute-it's all over for the sisters of AKA. I wish that Wanda Sykes was appearing near me. Wanda is the woman in comedy. Her take on AKA would be interesting.

I never wanted to pledge AKA, Delta, Zeta, or any other sorority. From what I saw for years, there were a bunch of girls (AKA's used to have to pass the color test) who switch up with their complimentary fraternities, look down on other people, are materialistic, and elitist.

Not all are this way, but the majority most definitely are.

I'm sorry. I think it's great to commemorate leaders...
but the AKA President does NOT need a wax statue of herself. That's silly.

If this is true, I'm sorry to say it, but it is VERY vain. It's one thing for someone outside of your circle to think you need a wax statue, but there should not be a consensus to create one that includes my friends/sisters.

That money could have gone to something else more worthy. To something that NEEDS the money and will help others. (A scholarship? That's a start.)

Hopefully this is all false, but if not, AKA will need to work harder to reverse the image their leaders are giving them.

With so many students experiencing dreams deferred with regards to attaining higher education because of the current economic crisis ...............

You would think that a black sorority which champions the enlightenment of the uneducated underclass would find better uses for that money

How many disadvantaged youths (whether they be White, Black, Hispanic or otherwise) could have attended a junior college with the money that was spent to finance wax figures of obscure individuals?

The use of the money for financing scholarships would have created a bigger impression and legacy than those gaudy wax figures will ever accomplish in a 100 years
01:55 PM on 07/31/2009
I agree. I was particularly confused by how a wax statue would help defray costs from the 2010 convention. Is the museum somehow paying to have a statue of her???
