WORCESTER, Mass. — Police in central Massachusetts say a baby girl who was cut from her mother's womb has been found alive and two people have been arrested in the woman's killing.

Police said Wednesday the girl appears to be in fair health at a New Hampshire hospital.

Thirty-five-year-old Julie Corey and an unidentified man have been arrested in New Hampshire after friends said they were suspicious of Corey's claims she had given birth. Corey has been charged as a fugitive from justice.

Corey was in custody and could not be reached for comment late Wednesday. Police did not know whether she had a lawyer.

The baby's mother, Darlene Haynes, was eight months pregnant. She was found dead in her apartment Monday. The 23-year-old's death has been ruled a homicide.

Those who committed this heinous crime should be behind bars for life without any chance of parole. We should also put prison inmates to work so they can pay for their upkeep and also pay thesurvivors of their victims. All prisons shoud have their own industrial complexes that would operate at a profit with the low labor costs. Finished goods can be sold at more competitive prices.

Sentencing a miscreant to death is hardly punishment. We are all under that sentence anyway. We should sentence them to life, and make sure they repay as much of their debt as possible.

Amazing how often it happens, really.

There are no words for this. Certainly in this country it is finally OK for women to not procreate. Can't imagine feeling so desperate to conceive and or raise kids....

IMHO I think part of the reason things like this happens is because in our society women are made to feel less than complete if they don't have children. Also many women think that if they can just have a child the man won't leave. Not to mention the fact that mental health care in this country is damn near unattainable.

I agree with you, also. Women are given so many mixed messages. I think higher education and a good support system are critical keys for a woman to find her way through the morass and discover her value. Unfortunately, that is not often the case. It took me years to get over the negative messages that I was told when growning up.

I heard on the news that the suspect was caught because she claimed to have had the baby one day and then showed up with it the next day. Friends and neighbors started wondering why she had been allowed to leave the hospital so soon.

I cannot understand how someone who would do such a thing could expect to get away with it. Even barring DNA testing, a gynecological exam will quickly reveal whether a woman has given birth recently. And how do you claim pregnancy when you don't even have an expanded abdomen?

The self-delusion inherent in these people is almost beyond the ability to comprehend.

What's the matter with people today? There is no sanity about sex, about reproduction, and human beings are treated as disposable items.

I think it is a product of our society. We live in a throw away society and eventually that can move from goods to people.

Unbelievably disturbing. Procreation treated recreation rather then responsibility.

What is it that our society drives women who can't have children to such desperate measures? You see women on TV saying all I want is to marry and have children...well for some not having children should be acceptable. There are far too many women having children that should not have them.

Was the motive to steal the child? or was that just one of many motives? not clear.
