HAVANA — Benicio del Toro accepted a new Cuban government award for international artists at a ceremony in Havana on Thursday, while Bill Murray entertained a small audience by crooning from "As Time Goes By.

Fellow actors Robert Duval and James Caan were also on hand as the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba gave Puerto Rican-born del Toro the first Tomas Gutierrez Alea Prize for his career body of work, including the lead in "Che."

Steven Soderbergh's two-part, 4 1/2-hour biopic on Argentine-born revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, who helped Fidel Castro take power in Cuba in 1959, was a hit on the island, often showing in theaters that had not been refurbished since the 1950s.

Murray wowed union members packed into a room behind the group's main headquarters, grabbing a microphone, singing and then jokingly passing around a baseball cap to collect tips for the piano player.

He said later he was most-taken with another time warp-like aspect of Cuba.

"I sure like the cars. I get excited about the cars," Murray said, referring to the hulking 1950s Chevrolets, Fords and other classic American roadsters that still ply Cuba's potholed streets. While the communist system restricts ownership of new vehicles, it allows Cubans to keep models made before the revolution.

Del Toro was in Havana on an unrelated trip that overlapped with a separate, 4-day visit by Murray, Caan and Duval, who are here on professional research and were invited to the award ceremony.

Cuba is famous for having been a mafia playground before Castro took power, and Duval and Caan both starred in Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 gangster classic "The Godfather."

"Caan, he's my godfather, no pun intended!" de Toro joked.

Duval – who like Murray was making his first trip to the island – said he was looking forward to getting a taste of authentic Cuban music, including Mambo.

"Hopefully we can go out and see some of the guys dance danzon," he said.

The Tomas Gutierrez Alea Prize is named for the late Cuban writer and filmmaker who directed more than 20 features and struck a balance between defending Castro's revolution and using wit to criticize it. He died in 1996.

Get real. Those guys are in Cuba for the same reason I would be in Cuba...the cigars, the rum, the view, the food & music...especially the cigars.

Walmart owns china for it's success and is the most repressive country and; in case of walmart; regime and company in the world. Why any "real American" are not calling for walmarts boycott? Cuba is a communist country, deal with it, like we let walmart deal our future away to china.

I'm all for bringing more jobs back to Americans by promoting more Made In USA products. Too many products and services are being outsourced and look at the state of our economy.

Cubans can't own new cars because of the trade embargo. The communist system has nothing to do with it.

Didn't Duvall once say he would never work with Steven Speilberg after he went to Cuba and met with Castro at a film festival? Interesting....

Still love Robert Duvall, I'm just sayin'...

Duvall is such a conservative, I wonder what he thinks about our Cuba policy. But he's in Cuba... hmm. Wasn't he a big supporter of W and Cheney?

Being a little right of most people here, I'd say who cares?

The policy was developed by republicans and democrats, and has been maintained by both republicans and democrats. So your question is based on a false assumption.

Personally, I feel we should drop the policy. I've been to Cuba a few times, and the people are wonderful, and sadly, most barely above the poverty level. Even saw Jack Nickolson once having a drink at a bar. Which leads me to my question, I wonder if they are having as much fun with the locals as I did. They like to party.

I agree. We should drop the policy. Should have dropped the policy long ago.

My husband used to spend summers in Cuba with his cousins. All the families came here with the revolution. He and his brother would love to go back. They have wonderful stories of their youthful escapades on that fabulous island. My husband even had a date with Baptista's daughter.

The reason I offered the question about Duvall was that I, like "expatstudent" above, thought he had made some comments about Cuba. Everybody's entitled to change his or her mind. I'm all for travel!!! Travel is the great educator.

Poverty level when it comes to luxury but they have free education, healthcare, housing and food. If the embargo didn't interfere in the ability to acquire goods, their buildings would improve. Unfortunately the other countries have their hands bent behind their backs and won't retreat from the embargo agreement or else they'll lose a trade agreement. Some people are content with living a secured life, debt free, with healthcare and education without a price and would not trade that for an elite few having luxuries at the expense of underpaid workers. Do they want better conditions? Yes, but that's the embargo.

agree. used to like Duvall til I learned he was a Bush supporter. He's a Christian Scientist, that might explain it. Anti science.

Benicio is awesome and I've always loved James Caan. he's still a very handsome man.
